Not quite correct. From what I understand he isn't getting royalties from the original decks, but he was paid a salary to create the deck concept. He says he knew all of this at the time and that he was good with it. It wasn't just to get his name out there, it was a one time design gig, afterwards they owned all the rights. I'm not saying that what the company did was good or bad, just that he was actually paid for producing the original design.

My boss (a commander) is a card game fan, he made a few videos on card tricks on YT and showed them to me. I've always been attracted by magic but never tried to perform ... Murphys really approached this wrong. they should have reached out to Chris and if not ask him to be the spokesperson, at least inform him that they will be taking the design he made and editing it. if they were going to be copying his style of advert for the cards too they really should have asked him first if he would like to be the one in the advert again, it would not only be the right thing morally but for their company as all the people that saw the original would see that it is the same person, same card design and same advert.

I need a deck of cards now lol. Just finished watching your card collection video. I guess I need to drop by Walmart and snag some basic cards lol. I just found your channel last week. Learned my first magic trick from you and showed my kiddos that pennies can go through tables. They have been trying to figure it out every since! As a graphic designer I respect the process and have several stories like this. Spend 100 hours designing a product for it to get bastardized. When I looked for my first deck to buy, I immediately fell in love with the Memento Mori. Then I saw the blue one and also cliked on it just because (well sometimes you can't help it ;'D) blue is my favorite color :'D However, although I found the blue one not bad, I intuitively came back and chose the first one. Which I am really really happy about because later on I watched both another time and I thought that on the blue one, sooomething is missing that the other one has... As a graphic designer I think I can say it's best to detach yourself from any projects you don't directly have ownership of. I've experienced the pain of putting time and effort into something only to have the client revise it down to an ugly mess. In this case the company is well within their rights and may have decided not to involve you because, as you mentioned, you are a perfectionist and would have wanted a say in the new design process. You can't blame them for capitalizing on a good idea and it doesn't really benefit you to voice your feelings or hold a grudge, although I fully understand the frustration and the need to rant. Lesson learned I suppose and it's super cool that you can put that creative energy into designing your own decks now! Good luck!!

This is a standard corporate copyright agreement. When a film composer writes music for a production company... the music belongs to the production company. John Williams doesn't "own" a lick of his music... and the production company can use the music in any way that they see fit on future projects or trailers (and they do). I get that you are torqued at the reuse of the work that you did for Murphy's... but it's work that you did FOR Murphy's. You got to make a deck that went into limited mass production, via a company that could finance and support the endeavor. You wouldn't have been able to do that without them. You didn't sell your soul... you just sold your work for payment, production, notoriety and bragging rights in return. And then you moved on. No offense, but the sob story doesn't really add up. Nobody cheated you, brother. They can print THEIR design (they own it... you made if for them) in any color that they want. Simply saying... "yeah, I don't like what they did to the original design that I made with them" is completely sufficient. I wouldn't post much more on this... the insight and interest in your channel is much too good for this kind of complaining. Just my two cents as a fan.

Bart Vos I'm not trying to prolong some kind of argument... but it just isn't a poor move. If they were placing his explanatory card in the deck... then you would have a point. But I don't think that's the case. I think Chris is merely emotionally invested in the work that he did for the company... and it is showing. Anyone that is on "team Chris" will see this as a suspect deal... but that's only due to bias. The only real news here is that Chris doesn't care for the aesthetics of the reprint in monochromatic blue... that's not how he designed it for them. Again, composers are not informed of the application of their music that is owned by a production company. Once they are paid, it's not theirs... and that's not really rude or unfair. I feel your pain all too much! Unfortunately, with corporate contracts being what they are, MM may have a claim they own all the intellectual property you had even THOUGHT OF while on salary there. Had very similar problem with my prior employer, and in America I call it unconstitutional to claim rights to somebody’s would-be idea or shell of an idea in the case of the blue cards. Problem is that courts are ok with such practices if you signed something. I’m still bitter as hell for the crap I encountered corporately, and you are spot-on. They suck for doing that to you, and someone made a d:kk move, probably realized it and went with it after discussion w a company retained lawyer. Forgiveness and acceptance will bring peace to you, but I know its tempting go for revenge, and you made a wise choice in the words you have chosen, which well demonstrates your intelligence. Bravo for informing your fans, and I’m in the position of never needing a 2nd deck of blue cards like the first, because you are right. The color palette is rather boring, unbalanced, and a total spin off the originals. I’m surprised they didn’t just put your name on the deck and hope you didn’t have the resources to sue and stop any implied association you have with this deck without any royalties or say in the change in face of the deck. Live well, man. I assume you and Daniel are on good terms, but Dunno the politics. Hi to Madison if you happen upon him in upcoming days. Love both your work! Give em hell!

Honestly respect the way that you reacted to the situation, and I'm glad you talked about it! I think what makes us really hate the release of the blue mementos, even before seeing this video and seeing how hard you worked on it, is that we know who you are and what you stand for and for them to release those cards without your knowledge is very rude to you. After watching this video though I think we are all running with pitchforks to blue memento mori trailers, tweets, and posts just because we support you bro!
