What makes the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 K5/K6 so special? How has it earned its reputation as one of the greatest super sports ever made?

I picked up my first 2006 GSXR 1000 a few months ago and everything you said on this review is exact. I did the Power Commander 3 with a complete ECU Flash and installed the quick shifter and also a GPR steering stabilizer. The bike is a total acceleration Beast. With the ECU Flash the power commander and the quick shift, the bike is just freaking deadly fast. I love this bike and I look for 3 years to find one here in the US that was in great shape. This bike handles amazingly around corners just like you're on a train track! And after the upgrades the bottom in pool, pulls even harder now. I gained 12 1/2 horsepower and 10 foot pounds of torque after the add-ons we're done. Absolutely love this bike and will never ever sell it! If you're looking for a bike that's a few years old that can still outrun the new ones, this is what you need to look for

k6 accelerates from 2k rpm . light and super fast feels like a playstation. a real riders experience. i do believe that every supersport rider should own or at least ride a k5k6 at a point in his life

I just bought a k5 gsxr 1000, the idle needs adjustment but overall it's in great condition and only has 6,000 miles! This is my dream bike and I'm glad I was able to get a hold of one😬👌

I have an 06 and everything you said was 110% correct. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the 55 over the 50 is night and day difference even on the street. I made the mistake of letting my local shop talk me into a less expensive 50 tire and I felt the difference IMMEDIATELY. I guess they assumed I just ride in a straight line. Never making that mistake again.

Excellent in-depth review! I've owned an 05 Gxsr1000 for about 2.5 years and added over 10k miles onto the odometer, with a combination of canyon carving, and about 18 trackdays, and I'm just totally satisfied with this bike. Everything that was said about the bike on the video was true. However, I cannot validate the head shake issue as I've never experienced that at anytime. The bike does have an aftermarket Ohlins steering damper installed. The other mods that were added are: K&N filter, PowerComander 3, an M4 end can (supposedly allowing another 6 hp at the rear wheel), braided stainless steel front brake hoses, a Bazzaz TRE module that is supposed to eliminate the rpm restriction at 12,500 in top gear, for another theoretical increase of 1000 rpm to allow an increase of 14 mph to 200 mph top speed! (I say "theoretical" because I've never come close to hitting the rev limited 186 mph.) I have no complaints about the handling of this bike. Having said that, in order to take trackday handling to a different level (beyond my self-limited capabilities) would require aftermarket forged aluminum wheels (costing about $2500-$3000 unless they can be found used), and improved tires. At that point, the question would be how much do you plan to change the bike's focus to that of trackday riding? In standard form, this bike is quite close to being track ready. I don't think I will sell my 05 Gxsr1000 for quite sometime!!!

Great job on putting out videos when you've got something interesting/constructive to say instead of pumping videos just for the sake of views. watch every single video. good job. Also like your calm personality too. hopefully i can find a K5/k6 when i get off LAMS

Like so many others I've wanted this machine since it was produced. I've owned every litre bike of the same era except the k5-6, all have have been a great experience and all were (in my opinion) the last of a dying breed... crazy fast machines, sweet handling and no need for all these 'rider aids' I've searched for two years and finally purchased a k6 in grey with less than four thousand miles :) Great video, great review.

Nice review. I've owned 2 K5 thou's over the years, after a lot of different 1000cc bikes, and by far the K5/K6 is above them all, that induction roar is hypnotic, had the clutch mod done when I got it, had the suspension setup to my weight, set of Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa, dry or wet they never gave me cause for concern. Personally I think the throttle response is better than the S1000. I once saw 172mph in 5th and it was still pulling like a barstard... Wish I still had mine. It was awesome

I've owned a K7 with superbike handlebars. The K6 is even better. It's nimble and fast and the engine pulls stronger than any other GSX-R 1000 from 4000 rpm to 9500 rpm. That's exactly the range you need on twisty roads.Equipped with a superbike handlebar the k5 k6 is an insane weapon on twisty roads. And it's cheaper to buy and maintain than new bikes like KTM Superduke 1290 or Aprila Tuono V4 1100 rr. I do not need an engine with Italien character or austrian reliability;-).The only thingi miss is an abs.

I was considering an MT-09 after a test ride but the more I think about it the more I want one of these. Agreed about reliability too, I had a 2011 GSXR 750 that used to sit outside over winter in the UK. Come spring after 3 or 4 months it would fire straight up, fuck I miss that bike.

Just bought my k5 and the previous owner has added almost every conceivable extra to make it mint.....ohlins rear shock, Ktec front internals, power commander with a yoshi exhaust, brembo front calipers (from an L1 I think......awesome...along with L1 master cylinder), ohlins steering damper and supercorsa tyres! I’ve had two fireblade (954 and 929), and an 08 r1 between them...it’s all about midrange shove IMO and this bike has it!!! ( not to mention comfortable ergonomics) Fucking perfect bike for road and track...I’ll never sell it! As you say, if you don’t own one you’d be stupid not to...they’ll never get any cheaper! Ps, I’ll upload a vid of how it performs in North Yorkshire, england......when I get round to it and you’ll see how it enables you to play with a road like no other!!! 😉

Nice review of this classic. I know how you feel about the MT09, what a pity it didn't work out for you. My next bike will be the suzuki GSX s1000 which also has the K5 engine. I am hoping it will be reliable and live up to Suzuki reputation. Be careful with that old steering damper. What a scare!
@pipboychronicles8 жыл бұрын
+nothing to see here Don't get me wrong, the MT-09 was a great bike. I think either I just got a real bad dealer or I just brought in too early as I was the first. I am sure they are fine these days with all the issues. I have 3 recall letters and counting for it at home somewhere lol! The GSX-S is a fantastic bike and worth the money over the MT-09 on suspension alone. Just keep in mind its not actually the same motor, block is the same but its quite different inside, doesn't have titanium valves etc and doesn't rev as high to cut costs, still has the soul of the old K5 though :)

I just got a K6- 6,000 miles (12,000K???) and it's funny, everything you're saying is exactly how I feel about it, besides needing a quick shifter- I'm just easy cruising on the street, not planning on and track time. I haven't had it above 7K rpm and I thought "Damn this thing really does pull down low", and I busted out laughing when you said it makes peak torque at 8500, thinking back to that (Don't judge, I've only been able to get 2 short rides in, I feel older than I am, and I don't want to die yet lol). It's back at the dealership I bought it from (at an absolute steal) to fix the low idle (just barely under 1K) and the cold idle not working, I think that's the cause of it's biggest problem- it dies under deceleration if I pull the clutch at like 3500rpm and don't downshift (so no throttle blip to match revs). Almost all of the time I spent riding was trying to figure out why it was stalling out, but luckily I was able to quickly narrow it down to decel and figured out how to replicate it, cuz my 30 day warranty is ticking away. I wouldn't normally worry about it, just deal with it myself, but they would even let me test ride it with the cash sitting on the table, and they said it ran perfect. It does seem to run perfectly besides those 2 issues. I'll know for sure when I get it back and have a chance to really ride it, away from traffic on better roads- I rode an identical bike in '08 and have wanted one ever since... I feel like I need a second "beater" bike cause I have an overwhelming urge to ride it every time I walk past it, and don't want to stop, but I'd like to keep the miles down. I got incredibly lucky just stumbling across it during an impromptu pop in while driving past the dealer. Investment, just like you said, but I'd trade it for an equally nice Busa (I'm a little too tall to be comfortable on it longer than a couple hours) Any K5/6 Gixxer advice? Anything I should look out for? I'm not too familiar with these bikes, and haven't ridden a 1000r in maybe, 10 years + or -.

K6 is best bike made ever bottom line I would eat up everything. Had a power commander and Yoshimura trc carbon slip on exhaust. The bike weighed 10 more pounds then 600 version. The recall was not on every bike it was certain serial numbers. My buddy bought k7 and it was so slow and junk in comparison I rode it and got off I’m under 5 minutes told my buddy we need to go to your dealer this thing is garbage.

I just got my 7500 original mile K6 from coworker for $5k with yosh/PCII tuned gearing and I stepped down from an early Hayabusa(case issue from known cracking upon start). ALLLLL these reviews about how much power these K6's have? It feels slow and gutless compared to my old '02 Busa. It had Yosh STG1 higher lift cams, full 4-1 system and a PCII tune from '07 so it had 187whp/107wtq and after 4 years of that I must say the k6 feels weak. Yha it handles better than a busa but man its not that fast LOL. Its fun dont get me wrong but why peeps call these godzilla is beyond me. My 520 lb wet Busa w 4" over rear arm is still more fun than a short wheelbase litre bike. midrange to me on these is not shit after owning a busa. These bikes were cool in '06 but 152whp is weak nowadays! Low end tq?? imtimidating?? nahhh these arent rediculous. Its Hype! I guess if your coming off a 600-750 it might be impressive
