Sunday afternoon we ran 2 emergency no heat service calls. First Weil McLain EG75 gas fired steam boiler with a Robert Shaw gas valve Thermopile Generator with Coaxial Connector just like a regular thermocouple, but a wider connection. It turns out there is a Weil McLain Service Bulletin SB0107 that references this kit: tinyurl.com/WMEG75
The second service call, Burnham gas fired hydronic boiler with a defective zone valve. Replaced using Wago 221 Lever Connectors, available here: amzn.to/3HbXT53

I have the Milwaukee heated Axis jacket and love it! It's light enough to wear in the fall and spring and with the heat I can also wear it in the dead of winter with the heat on high. If I plan on being outside a long time maybe blowing snow I'll sometimes put a bigger jacket over it, but for short stints just the Axis jacket with the heat on is all I need. I just got the heated hoodie kit with the battery and charger on-sale at Home Depot for only $99 as a Christmas gift for myself. I've heard Milwaukee isn't making these heated jackets any longer. Don't know if it's true or not but it's a shame if it is because they're great jackets!

you'd have flipped your lid here mid 1990's and back, everyone replaced gas valves and retrofitted from power piles to standing pilot thermocouples, adding 24v transformer and controls. then there was the junk electronic spark ignition setups, which failed lots and most just ripped the setup out and tossed in trash, also converting to a standing pilot setups. lot's of giant dinosaurs that were coal burners converted to natural gas/propane. I'm starting to think the C in Canada, stands for Communism.

Some millivolt generators are like that. Basically two types. One with wires and one with an end similar to a thermocouple. But, it’s not a thermocouple. It’s a millivolt generator, also known as a thermopile

How can Mike be sure the Manifold Jetting is matched with the new Gas-valve? I do home repairs and while working in the basement. I heard a Boiler Back-fire once and told the Owner to call the Gas-Company. Manufacture Engineers match the components. I thought the Serviceman had to use OEM parts? Also Mike should have changed that miss-matched gas pipe instead of putting a "LOAD" on the union connection when he hooked it backup. I think that Boiler should have been "Red-tagged" UNSAFE. I watch Mike and learned how to use a Pro-Press for Wet pipe jobs.

Here in the UK we tend to call them generator thermocouples.Only ever seen them on US pool boilers. The generator/ thermocouple/thermopile produces the voltage to open the Gas valve via volt free external control. It is wired via high limit stat and boiler stat and incorporates pilot failure interrupter, the two white wires connected to the Gas valve end.

pretty much, all thermocouple's have the smaller diameter body, while the thermopiles/mv generator have the larger diameter body. keep that in mind and you'll rarely be fooled, at least until you hit the left hand thread thermocouples 🤯

@mikeypipes what you had there was called a Thermopile it's pretty much the same thing as a thermocouple but I'd say more beefed up, The main difference between Thermocouple and Thermopile is their method of measurement. The thermocouple is a thermoelectric instrument, while the thermopile is an instrument that modifies thermal energy into electrical output.

The old device looks like a "voltage generator" not a thermocouple. The device is also called a "thermopile" and is used to generating higher voltages than a thermocouple. The sixe of the part that in in contact with the flame was pysically larger than a thermocouple. These are sometimes used in gas heaters and steam boilers and are available at most hardware store as are thermocouples. That would explain why the thermocouple did not fit in the gas valve. Your approach was good but very expensive. A replacement thermopile is around $50.00 at the big box stores and comes with two wire lugs on the end which connect to the gas valve.

its a 750 millivolt thermopile generator. They also come in a waffer looking style. There isnt any ac voltage to operate the gas valve. Thermopile - Robertshaw love them, 1951 series (coaxial connector) probably at supplyhouse, 1951-536 for 36" unit. Generates 500-600mV (for testing purposes) The other section bypassed in the valve is a secondary cutoff, kept in place as a spacer, if the connection held together by the wire nut is disconnected it isolates the thermopile from the valve killing everything including pilot gas flow.
@crashoverride328
@crashoverride328 2 жыл бұрын
@@PipeDoctor Probably, but you now know what they are - no more surprises. I'll admit,, I mostly encountered them on commercial gas fryers rather than on heating equipt, but they are the same part. If they don't produce at least 400mV in the flame path they won't hold the valve open, if they ARE producing 500mV or above and the valve won't stay open - the electromagnet in the valve failed. Easy test point is the wire nut bypassed point. Red probe to the connection under the wire nut, black to the side of the threaded part holding it into the valve. Knowledge is power - If you aint testing, you're guessing, and now you know how to test a thermopile. Hope you and your family (Including employees) have a fantastic New Year.

Ran into this same issue at my girl friend's house over Christmas break about 20 years ago. Turns out it was exactly what these guys are all saying, it was a themopile and not a thermo couple like I was used to seeing. Couldn't get it to stay lit. Thought I was screwed. Called a plumber friend of mine who referred me to an old Lilco gas boiler service guy who did some side work on his own. He came out on Christmas Eve and had the thermopile that I needed in his old Buick station wagon. Lol I couldn't thank him enough and wanted to pay him double what he was asking to be paid. He said he was happy to help and said he knew my grandfather who also worked for Lilco years ago so he was happy to help a fellow "Lilco family member". That's what people did for one another back then! I remember his last name was Harris. I'm sure he's long retired by now. But guys like they were a rare breed. I can't imagine the amount of knowledge and experience this guy retired with. WTF? The gas valve should've said 750mV when used with pilot generator. I'm confused now. Or all the millivolt systems I've seen say 750mV. I think some are 250mV like on gas fireplaces. You did right putting in the intermittent pilot conversion. It's more reliable and doesn't waste gas to keep pilot lit when not needed.

@@PipeDoctor sorry If I confused you on that because when I saw the wires I thought that could cause either an explosion or fire.

electrolytic capacitor/s on the LWCO have failed and it's getting a large amount of DC ripple or half-wave DC pulses. it will likely quit working soon (up in smoke) or be unreliable, it sounds like it's chattering the relay and it may even short out the transistor or ic and stick on filling. tell them to be prepared for a whole house swimming pool and fountains, also that crusty pipe 🤪🤪

Definitely bad generator. When there swelled up means there junk. I use to carry one of those on my truck for those rare occasions.

That plastic piece use to go to a thermal overload or limit. But most I seen were always removed and wired limit to 24v.
