Some tips for Dan. 3 wraps of Blue monster tape dope is plenty. 5 wraps was the old white tape, monster is thicker so less is needed. 2 psi cut off and 1/2 psi is standard for residential steam. Set the cut off at 2 psi and a 1.5 psi differential. That will get you to the 2/.5 psi needed. At the end of the video the diff was set to .5 psi which would cause the boiler to short cycle. The reason the pipes are large on a steam system is to allow such low pressure steam to get around the building. The boiler will also tend to short cycle on a cold system because the cold steel causes the steam to condense back to water which is the reason for the pressure drop. Read the Holohan books as your boss tells you, they are full of great knowledge as well as entertaining. Dan is a great writer. Keep your eye out for seminars where he speaks and have Mike pay for you to go. Ask Mike to explain the Hartford loop and the reason why it needs to be there. The surging of the water can be caused by contaminants in the water or oil on the top of the water line which deters the creation of steam and can cause "wet" steam. Boiler may need a chemical treatment or a good skimming. Mike, you have a good kid there, take care of him. If you don't , he can come up to the hudson valley and work for me. As always, good video. Keep up the good work.
@throttlebottle59063 жыл бұрын
yeah, neither of them read the label or manual it seems ;) it says right on the front "DIFF." and "diff. is subtractive" and there's only a 1/2 psi differential set, Daniel actually noticed and questioned the short cycling.

The new pressure control is normally what I see on commercial steam boilers. Definitely a higher quality switch than what was shipped with the Boiler. Glad to see Daniel spending some time with the Master, Mikey Pipes. Thanks for taking us along. The old Honeywell Mercury Pressure Switches lasted forever, I still have some working today, 30+ years old.

Watching you teach Danielson on this reminds me of a company I did work for on their commercial steam kettles. When I was called to work on them, they were all out of whack on gas pressure, all of the readings coming from the draft and combustion, the internal water mixture was non existent, which will corrode and or cause build up of hard impurities and cause other problems, but once I got them all squared away, which took a lot of hours and money and gave them a bill, they told me they would be calling the other guy back because he was a lot cheaper than I was, my response was, "You get what you pay for in this business" Luckily they have really good exhaust vents, over kill actually, so they haven't killed anyone yet. This is just one example of, "I want it cheap rather than right" that happens around here.

Classic Mikey Pipes instructional video - Great Job! Some additional information: The crimp connectors you use most are easily identified by their color: from smallest to largest - red = 22-18 gauge, blue - 16-14 gauge, yellow 12-10 gauge. There must be a chart somewhere that says this on the internet. Additionally, where possible I like to use ring type terminals on the connections. This prevents a wire from falling off a connection terminal in the event the retaining screw becomes loose. Obviously if the terminal screws are secured so as to prevent removal you can't use ring terminals. In marine applications this usage of ring terminals is useful because of the vibration challenges to all connections on the boat. Not a big deal here but something to keep in mind. I also notice that short pigtails is a Mikey Pipes thing. It may look pretty but longer pigtails inside boxes and connection points can be very useful for future work. How many times have you wished you had a cable stretcher? :) Again, your videos are getting better all the time - thanks.

4 psi is pretty high steam pressure on a residential boiler....1 is more than enough. Less is more with residential steam. High steam pressure creates issues with steam not reaching the furthest radiators on one pipe systems. Dan himself says it. If your vents are good and your farthest radiators are cold, turn the pressure down before you try turning it up. You also made a fuel adjustment after your combustion test while teaching the importance of a combustion test without doing another combustion test. Nice.

Mikey Pipes, great video as always. I enjoy your videos daily. A quick observation re: combustion analysis and gas pressure. Standard gas pressure setting is 3.5" of W.C. or whatever is stated on the rating plate of the boiler. If the combustion results (which you did firstly) are proving inefficient for the type of equipment firing at such a gas pressure (atmospheric drafted appliance), and then you adjust the gas pressure to make the machine have a more efficient combustion (which turned out to be 2.77" W.C.), then why did you re-adjust the gas pressure back up to 3.5" W.C. after that? This would change the combustion efficiency adjustments made previously. Is efficiency the goal, or standard gas pressure settings? Which is the most correct?

Daniel is like a little lamb . I think he will be great , but he needs more coaching . The switch with the three terminals I can only assume are NO,NC, and Common . And you wire it as needed . So even without the manual and an understanding of the system that should be easy to figure out . I know they are not marked that way but you do have a multi meter . I think you will like that type of wire stripper I have been using that type for over 25 years . Keep up the good work .

Mike, do most of your customers prefer an email invoice, or a paper one? Do you print paper from the truck? As an old DIY guy, whenever I change a control, I diagram the wiring and terminal labels or snap a picture of the old one before disturbing it. Then I study the instructions for the new control so I understand what the old one was doing, and select the right option for the new one. That helps a lot in case you have to leave a job or get distracted and forget something. It is sort of the electrical version of when you disassemble something mechanical you systematically place the parts in a way that shows you how they go back together. I think you were slyly pointing that out to Daniel to understand the wiring before disconnecting it. Daniel is good technician and is going to be a great one as he adds knowledge and experience.
@walterbordett20233 жыл бұрын
@@PipeDoctor Thanks. I am not aware of any HVAC servicers in my area doing that, they use paper. But I agree that customers need a proof of payment and description of what was done and the charges and email is now OK for most people. Have a great day.

A couple of observations. Would it not make sense to check gas pressure before doing and combustion analysis? High or low pressures will skew your test. Without a working pressure gauge how can you really now what pressure the boiler is cycling on. Scales on controls are exact.
