The homeowner was super cool about it.. What a sport for laughing and stuff with you. I would have been beyond pissed, not wanting to talk to anyone and crying in the car. lol Great job Mikey - guaranteed you're going to save several homeowners and some smart plumbers from going through the same thing just from this video.

Finally someone who understands my pain. I have been in my house for 18 years and the first year that I moved in, i had the same problem. I had to replace the automatic feeder which I did and it stopped working. However now I am stuck with having to feed it water in the middle of the night whenever the temperature drops to the single digits. It's nerve-wracking because I work the third shift, and when the temperature drops to the single digits sometimes I have to miss work and stay home for fear that the boiler will stop working because that's what it does. I actually had to post pone winter vacations for fear that something will happen with the boiler while I am traveling. However it is a Utica, and that boiler has been in this house since 1960 something. At 68 degrees in my house even when it drops to the single digits, it feels like a sauna. It works phenomenal!😮

You need to address why you are adding water in the middle of the night

Yes, I have a call to a plumber so that he can do a pre-winter maintenance and see what is going on. Once the weather gets below 10 degrees, or minus zero, I have to add water to it. I am glad you mentioned it. @@PipeDoctor

I like having a few buckets on my truck and if the relief valve is leaking I use a shop vac hose and run it into a bucket. Mike these are the best videos, you explain everything so well. Thanks!

Just finished rebuilding a 5 section weil mclain. They didnt maintain it and just drove it into the ground. It did have an hydrolevel autofill and I explained what could happen but they wanted it on. I will say that one thing with the hydrolevel is it gives you a digital count of the gallons that went through. So that is helpful to know if you have a leak or bad vent but otherwise you are correct, you could have a disaster happen if you werent home to catch it.

I am 100% agree with you ,my plumber gave me a suggestion to put auto feeder fo both boilers i said it take couple of minutes to cķ and clean the water I do twice a wèek drain until the clear wayer comes thank God i made right discion

Don’t have many steam boilers here in Ontario anymore. Good information in this video Mike about the automatic fill valve. The old hvac guy in Toronto. 👍🇨🇦

Everyone with a steam system should read that book or hire a service company to do so. The savings alone are worth it.

I have one of these cut offs and it failed last summer and flooded basement. But you’re saying once a month Im forced to check if the low water cut off works? But to avoid the filling position fail i experienced wouldn’t I be checking to see if the boiler is actually too full? Why do I need to know if cut off is working in this situation?
@scottmaz40632 жыл бұрын
You come downstairs to do your laundry, you can check the gg and add water yourself. If the phone rings don't answer it while your adding water to the boiler.

Great video mikey P! I always thought (in theory) that those water feeders would fail in the CLOSED position to avoid this exact scenario but damn I've never seen one stay stuck open like that. Good find brotha!👍🏾 & aye tell the customer to grab a surfboard next time if this happens again! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂🌊 #surfsup

Yep he's a Guru.... Dan Houlihan oh yeah I was gonna say 10 to 15 buckets lol ... I like your maintenance Plan .... Where you wave the trip charge .and discount the labor and parts charges a little .. Boy did I blow it for the last 23 years 😞But ... I did a lot of good shit .over the years , have a great reputation .. and would consider myself a pretty top notch Residential Gas heating tech . ... I really never blow my horn ... but I guess I just did ... lol. . Great video brother

Hi, the water would of first started pouring out of the main vents in the basement correct? And if that didn’t tip you off then the first floor air vents would be the next clue. I am staring to think about shutting off my water supply to my auto feeder in my big 6 section new steam boiler esp before I renovate the basement

Correction on the water boiling temperature. Distilled Sterile pure water doesn’t boil at 212°. But a contaminated water will boil.

Mike do you ever get calls like this where the gauge glass is just plugged up? I had two in a row today. People get this misunderstanding from old timers that you don’t need to maintain gas/steam heating systems. Only if they knew
