Starting the job off with some great weather and throwing together some grasshoppers and some 12” fittings on pipe. 30” pipe is coming next week along with more welders and workers in general.

Great video man don’t be afraid to show your whole daily routine waking up in your RV cooking breakfast going into the job and don’t be afraid to go to basic with all the pipeline, welding, terminology and techniques. Most of us have basic welding knowledge but not anything about your awesome occupation.

I definitely will. I’m excited about showing everyone what this occupation is all about.

Awesome video! Planning on trying to get into the local 601 steamfitters soon, in a pre-apprenticeship program right now getting some welding experience and certifications. Love the rig btw! Personally a GM guy but it’s hard to deny the bad-assery that is a 4th gen Cummins dually welding rig.

Thanks. It’s used to hook our grounds to. It holds our grounds and makes sure we ground through a specific point on the weld instead of randomly arcing to the pipe.

So if you ever have to weld off of the truck is there anything special you have to do the truck? I got my first mobile weld job coming up and I have a vise that mounts in my trailer hitch. Wasn’t sure if using my portable generator to power my Lincoln MP 210 would mess up anything electrical on my truck if I weld from the hitch vise.
@DownhillWelder3003 ай бұрын
You’ll be just fine. I don’t work off of this truck but i have worked off of every other truck I’ve owned without any problems at all welding on them.

@dustinmeier9753Ай бұрын
Keep the ground close to what you’re working with. Basically, make sure you don’t have a computer between your ground and your stinger. But you should be doing that anyway, even off the truck. Same theory as when you’re welding the vehicle. The only time I’ve seen issue was in a couple of upfitter shops when I worked for Peterbilt. Some of them would ground the chassis in a central location and then move all around the truck welding tabs, brackets or whatever. It was rare, but I’d see blown fuses or a fried EMC or body control module… worst one was a brand new fire truck. I was there for a week chasing wires. Turned out to be a fuseable link behind the dash.😳

I know you've got a video about your gear. Can you point me in the direction of the video that covers those knee pads?
@DownhillWelder3003 ай бұрын
I didn’t actually. I probably should though. The knee pads are Clc brand. They’re the only one I’ve found that have leather straps and made of rubber so they don’t burn up. I love them.

Explain what you mean by welding uphill or downhill. That’s a new one to me. I’ve worked pipeline as an operator. Did most of my time on Tact rigs, hoes and rubber tired hoes mainly.
@DownhillWelder3002 ай бұрын
Uphill is when you start at the bottom of the pipe and weld to the top. Mostly done in plants and refineries. Downhill is when you start at the top and weld to the bottom, pipeline.
@WinnDixie8032 ай бұрын
In the years that I worked pipeline, I’d see this and never knew it had a name or heard it called that. I’ve got several friends in Local 798, I guess it was always assumed the everyone knew what it was called. Thanks for filling me in!
