For those who are probably having a fit about how far back your camper is, you have plenty of weight counting in front of the axle, all that welding equipment is probably more weight than the tongue weight of that camper!

Not much difference between this and a large bumper pull travel trailer, weight is still off the back end. Don’t worry about the mule, just load the wagon.
@NTM20099 ай бұрын
Yep lots of weight up front still. Probably enough weight that it's over payload
@KDIGGG8 ай бұрын
@@NTM2009doubtful, these have an 8k lbs payload rating, trailer likely has 2k lbs of tongue weight, leaves 6k roughly left for it to be overloaded. That welder doesn’t even weigh close to that

@KDIGGG not even close to 8k payload. With the diesel engine that truck will have ~4800lb payload. Bumper, welder, bed, gear , pin weight, people it will be darn close if not over payload

I started on the pipeline right out of welding school with the dream of having a beautiful rig like you have. Done a lot of Kinder Morgan lines down in Alabama and Georgia. But as time went on I started wanting to get into the equipment side of things and after a lot of bothering for a chance for some seat time I found my passion. I enjoyed the welding side but that cold A/C in the cab mid summer changed my mind lol. I run a utility pipe crew in Charlotte, NC now and home every night. We need more people and channels like this to spotlight the industry and maybe draw in some of the younger generation. I’m 35 now and it’s almost impossible to find young people who have the drive and passion to learn the trades. There is lots of money to be made out here if you stick with it.

When i get customers with trailers i never recommend trailer tires honestly not sure why they even make them they usually last a thousand miles then blow. Question from a bumper pull camper person. Why not convert your camper to a gooseneck style hitch rather then fifth wheel? Just curious is all. Safe travels
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
I had that setup on my last truck but couldn’t on this one for two reasons. 1. I couldn’t find a gooseneck adapter short enough. The camper would ride way too high in the front with the truck being lifted and the ball being higher than a typical factory location. 2. The gooseneck ball is too close to the welding machine. The camper would hit if i turn too sharp. Pulling a regular gooseneck is fine because the neck isn’t as wide as a camper. Thanks for the question! Hope i answered it.

I trust you when you say it pulls great with the hitch so far back but do you think it lifts the front end up at all?
@DownhillWelder3008 ай бұрын
I’m sure it takes a little weight off the front of the truck, but If i would scale the truck before i put the welder, bottles and leads then hook to the camper it would have more weight on the front than without.
@DownhillWelder3008 ай бұрын
The big bumper helps keep some weight up front too compared to stock.
@bbrcummins19847 ай бұрын
These trucks are designed for the front to raise with a load, just check factory alignment specs and you'll understand

What bed is that? did your truck come with coil rears? what Air bag system do you have for the truck?
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
The bed is a custom built welding bed built by Hot Shot Specialty welding in Dallas Ft Worth. My truck has leaf spring rear suspension with 2” lift blocks and air lift air bags. I have an entire video covering the specifics of the truck and a video on the bed.

I've been welding for about 7 years now and working in a steel shop and fab shop and was wondering how to get started in the pipe welding industry?
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
I got my start working for a mechanical contractor welding uphill. It’s definitely a tough road and you almost always need to know somebody in the industry especially when work is slow.

I was wondering why you don’t swap out the hitch on your trailer to use your goose neck ball for your trailer. Gen Y makes a great one
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
Those are really nice hitches! The issue is that the camper gets too close to the welding machine when i turn if i use the gooseneck ball. I could actually hit the welder with the 5th wheel hitch where it is now. Like most issues with a truck set up like this, space is a premium and a hitch that i use very seldom gets pretty low on the priority list. Thanks for the suggestion. I plan on using a hitch like that in the future on my next rig.
@jerrylong35809 ай бұрын
I totally see that. Didn’t occur to me to take that in to the question. But I would like to say. Very nice set up. And as for people saying your hitch is set too far back. Not at all. What are you sitting about 12/16 inches off center of the axle? People don’t realize how short your flat bed is and take in to account how much weight you have in front of the axle with your welder and other equipment.
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot! It’s nice to hear when someone understands how it all works. You’re right in the ballpark, I’ve never measured it, but it’s pretty close to 16 inches if i had to guess. I honestly never worried about it because it has never been an issue. It pulls great so why change anything. It helps that it’s a pretty light camper. If i ever bought anything bigger i would definitely look into changing some things up. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I really do appreciate it.

@@DownhillWelder300 could use b and w offset to bring it further back?
@DownhillWelder3009 ай бұрын
I may look into that. The 5th wheel hitch hasn’t been enough of a pain to change things up yet. My next truck will be set up so i can use the gooseneck ball.

If you could name one must have item to have traveling in a camper what would it be?

It’s more than one item, but i would say a toolbox with an assortment of tools like screwdrivers, pilers, wire strippers, socket set and a utility knife.
