I'm so pleased to see that they DID actually make more power than just a gutted can, and the craftsmanship alone is worth the price of admission if they ever become available. Works of art indeed. It would really be a fun experiment to alter the dimensions, and diameters to see if the same design could be tweaked to raise the power peaks even higher. Great work Morgan!

@@fabzacres-blackcatMore power isn't everything, you may burn a piston, or over heat the saw, the engineers at Stihl spend a TON of time balancing all these factors in order to make a good reliable powerful saw, then some joker with a mig welder and a grinder in his garage thinks he is smarter than that whole team of engineers. While I do understand that those engineers have to include things in their design criteria that you may not care about, they still are way smarter and have way more resources and information than all the muffler mod "experts" on KZbin put together.

@@integr8er66 yah , well the difference IS the engineers are constrained by regulations which vary country by country. A canned muffler is just THAT , a device to MUFFLE (quiet) the sound and was never intended for performance … a “joker” with a mig welder, a grinder and some KNOWLEDGE can EASILY outperform the stock can - and have a COOLER running / more efficient saw. In fact ol Buckin Billy Ray and his mentor Bearclaw have been running these style pipes for YEARS so your statement about “overheating the saw/burning a piston” shows me YOUR lack of knowledge/understanding. Have a nice day 😂

Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship! As well as the Ram Horn pipe that Bucking runs on his saws there's a lot of effort that goes into producing and perfecting a muffler such as these. Great Work Morgan!!! They may not be for everyone, but they do perform and have proven that on the dyno, thanks Joe for producing this video and showing off the work of a master metal crafter.

I was looking for this comment..... Chainsaws are so loud and annoying to begin with, I can't imagine someone he uses it every day would want it to be even louder. Stock all the way!! I wish people would make pipes that are quieter AND more powerful. I don't even want to know the price of these shown, that make them louder.... I'm sure it's insane. Kind of reminds me of the kids that like putting $400 titanium fart cannons on their Civics, and think it sounds and looks good 🤣

@@gutrali agree!! I do residential tree work so I want to keep the noise down. I do modify my own saws. I just take a step bit into the can and weld or braze the appropriate size pipe. I’ve used metal broom handles, curtain rods all kinds of things. Depending on the angle and how much is inside can will determine the loudness in my experience. I try to angle it down away from exhaust port and 1.5-2 inches inside and 1-1.5 on the stick out on outside. They work well for my likings. My coworkers and saws I’ve built the operator seems to be happy. Had a friend straight shot a 562 muffler and it was so obnoxiously loud and sounded horrible

It looks like the un-modded muffler performed better at wide open throttle (WOT). When cutting wood, I've got the throttle at WOT 80% or more of the time. Plus, if you're thinking they may interfere with the safety bar or the wood being cut, I think I'd just keep my Stihl, stock. Form follows function, in my opinion.

Would love to see the factory muffler opened up and compared to these three. You have to be careful running pipes that dump out the front. In big timber about two thirds of the way through the log it can block the exhaust and lean your saw right out. Ask me how I known. lol Took me a few cuts to figure out what was going on, because I had just built the saw I kept thinking something was wrong with the saw itself. Dyno only gives hard numbers. In the timber these style pipes are second to none … I’ve built several (original Bearclaw design) and did send one to Joe for testing - came out at 9% peak to peak but the numbers don’t tell the whole story - the throttle response , .5hp gain and .5ft/lb increased torque and the on/off throttle feathering ability make them perfect for treework and firewood duties … wear your hearing protection though , they are LOUD and rowdy

I think a properly modded dual port stock can should have been in the mix.? And idk about everyone else but weight is a major factor for me, would like to know the weight difference.? For me it’s a hard no, I appreciate the hard work that went into it but the practicality is not there. I’m pretty sure a properly modded stock can will do the same. Hopefully you’ll see this and try one.? Great video like always Joe 👍🏻
@fabzacres-blackcat

No … a modded dual port will NEVER equal these style pipes … I’ve tested them all in the timber , stock can vs dual port can vs piped can vs my version of the Bearclaw design which I call the Rowdy pipe and the piped exhaust is superior in every aspect. I can also produce them relatively inexpensively vs Morgan’s design which is far more labor intensive but gives a fuzz more gain. Mass producing pipeslike Morgan’s IS possible however I’d say I would have to charge $199+ for one vs $55-75 for my “simpler” design 😜

Would it be a good idea make a chain(s) for testing purposes that had all the actual teeth cut off ? Some thin zip wheels on an angle grinder could cut them off pretty quick. Slinging a toothy chain on one these maxed out saws could be nasty.

I made a similar comment on buckins video on these. The pipes are a bit too big, if they were 25% smaller they'd run better and be snappier. They're basically smaller can mufflers with giant outlets, if the outlet was equal to about a one inch pipe they'd be better. If Morgan is ok with it, weld up the outlet making it close to one inch square total, I bet it makes more power and has better response.

Yes 👍. The Dyno tells a story but the timber is where the rubba meets the road. I’ve tested stock vs stock / vs stock tube exhaust deflector vs my hand built Rowdy pipe (Joe tested this pipe design and results are on my channel) “Bearclaw style” pipe and once the pipe is HOT (up to operating temp) there is simply no comparison. You’re rippin thru the timber with WAY more torque , throttle response is instantaneous and cut speed is the fastest.

Really need to follow up with dyno runs with modified mufflers on the same saw. One test with one added port and another test with two added ports. I'm guessing that those tests weren't done for a reason. I do realize that the type of person that wants these is going after a look rather than performance and the guy probably spent a ton of time building these pipes and did a good job making them look nice but if they don't outperform simple muffler mods people should know.

Nice to see the actual numbers of these mufflers. The dyno certainly proves the theory of increasing the performance of a saw as the number don't lie. I would imagine the results in the wood would be similar if not a slight improvement when the saw is under a natural load, doing what it was designed to do. Just due to the fact that it can exhaust the air swifter in grunt mode, so to speak. If the price is right I would go for one of each for sure to experiment on my saws. (268xp & 272xp). Would be interesting to see the "Ram Horn & The Ironhorse" on the dyno as well and compare them all "Amano Amano". Thanks Dyno Joe and Morgan for this great experiment and now proof of concept.

That’s really cool that you got a couple of Morgan’s pipes to test out. He lives about 40 mins away from me. The guy is one heck of a metalworker.

My opinion is that these are all a waste of money. You can throw away the spark screen and open the stock hole up and get a 10% gain.... Just my opinion....
