While I can fully understand Pip’s initial despair and frustration shortly after the dismasting, it’s great to see she is back smiling and in a cheerful mood. These slow boat episodes are so much more entertaining and educational than any of the other Vendee Globe videos. It goes to show that although it is technically a race, the attraction for me (and probably many others) in following the race is not so much in whoever is going fastest but all about the resilience and perseverance of the sailors and how they deal with the various problems that they encounter. Pip is a great example of how to cope in difficult circumstances, with some good English humor too! It’s really amazing to watch, and a must-see for all aspiring solo sailors.

Oh how our view of reality changes in context...5.3 Kts..."I have a half an hour of pure speed". Pip, this is a master class on so many levels...ingenuity, emotional recovery, positive thinking, and the right song at the right time "Should I Stay or Should I Go"...clearly you are going 🙂 I don't know if you'd ever read this Pip, but I so understand the roller coaster of emotion this moment has been for you. I had worked hard a long to get my horse and me ready for a show after 3 years away; 11 days before the event he foundered, came close to being so bad as to end it, and yet with the help of an amazing team, have started him healing again. You are on the slow boat, I'm on the slow recovery path, but like you...I work the problems and look up to the goal, not down in despair. I know Vendee is about blasting around the world, but I just loved that moment when you panned around and exclaimed..."there is so much color". Sometimes slow allows us to really see what is around us in the now. You will be back to fast action and I hope to see you in the next VG, pushing the limits again.

It seems, whenever I travel, if everything goes according to plan, the memory fades quickly. The most memorable experiences are those where there's some sort of disaster. It brings out the best. I hope there are many young people watching this. It's the kind of example that should be the inspiration for us all. Some allow adversity to dominate - others relish the challenge. Pip, I think you've got a huge (and growing) crew pushing Medallia through the waves!
