Over the past two weeks, I built a pair of scale model pirate ships and arranged them in a high seas battle diorama. The ships are the Flying Dutchman and the Satisfaction of Captain Henry Morgan.
This is also the BHT Patreon art challenge week! The vote landed on "A Pirate's Life for Me" as the theme for November. My patrons submitted some beautiful crafting artwork and a few of them even made videos to accompany their builds. Be sure to check those out!

If he sells any it would probably be locally as I can't imagine nothing short of divine intervention would see them survive a shipping trip in perfect condition to a far off address given how delicate plenty parts of them are. My father loved building models, so I know its fairly common for builders to like to hold on to there works rather then sell them off if they can. Makes sense when you think about it, you invest lot of time and energy into something like this and it sorta becomes a part of you and to send it off almost feels like cutting off a limb. Also one of the reasons why any time an accident happens and a finished build gets extremely damaged it can hit the creator hard as an tungsten orbital strike.

I love the (perhaps unintentional?) implication that the Dutchman is running down her own wind, as opposed to the "actual" wind that the SOCHM is running down. Really adds a level of supernaturalness and I believe (though I might have dreamed this) that there are versions of the myth where the Flying Dutchman sailed with her own supernatural storm always accompanying her and filling her sails so that fits this build well. Seriously well done on the cannons and those red sails too.
@deltakamikaze5524
@deltakamikaze5524 Жыл бұрын
Yes, most versions of the Flying Dutchman [that i've heard of depict] her either sailing like she has a hurricane behind her, or that she is either constantly accompanied or has a supernatural ability to control and/or spawn a powerful gale, as the Flying Dutchman sank in a gale
@seansky2721

I love the fact that your pirate battle doesn't occur on a flat calm sea, as so many "experts" depict their ship models upon. I find it unlikely both sailing vessels would have the wind astern on opposite courses. Your water technique is both simple and awe inspiring!
@qwerty2008100
@qwerty2008100 Жыл бұрын
The sails should've been angled to depict a single wind direction, but this might be a limitation of the models. A lot of plastic models I see are made to go together in one way and don't allow room for adjustment. Sad really because it's the first thing I noticed. Kinda draws my attention away from the fantastic water and cannon fire details.

Great build dude! Only 1 piece of advice when building ship dioramas in the future: make them sit deeper in the water. Right now they look a bit.. floty. The ladder on the side of the dutchman should sit a little above the waterline, so it can actually be used when climbing into rowboats etc. For ships without ladders, its usually at its widest part where the waterline is.
@donhartfield

This was awesome to watch! From the thumbnail it looked as if the picture frame base was a book that you had created the diorama within (like Treasure Planet's holographic story book). Do you think making a diorama within a book would be something you would be interested in doing in the future?

I'm a real fan of diorama art, and have visited many historic maritime museums in the U.S as well as Europe in witness to some tremendous pieces of ship depictions. I am wholly impressed by both your creativity and technique. As a sailor, the singular departure from reality here would be two ships of full sail in a downwind run going in opposite directions. Otherwise, your realism is striking and a beautiful thing to behold.

@@Faraway994I listened twice after reading your comment. He NEVER stated this. At all. If you inferred this from nautical legends or read it in a written statement that I missed, so be it. The thing is, this is not his only sailing ship build. The sails going converse to each other has occurred in each of the builds. In point of fact, I cannot remember ever seeing ANY modeler, regardless of supernatural nautical legends or dismissals, that has ever done a head to head battle with the wind going correctly for both vessels.
