Considering all G&S 'operettas' were composed as "music hall' entertainments, lampooning political and social 'norms' in Britain at the time of their composing, I think G&S would support and enjoy this 'megamix.' They were musical comedies of the highest order, mocking the 'stiff' operas across town, not stuffed shirt operettas. Unfortunately, they have been Doyle-carted into the museum. It takes inventive thinking to put these museum pieces back into popular culture! Bravo on this medley!!!

I've never had more fun at a musical than the 25th anniversary production of Pirates. I was about 14. Jon and Simon absolutely killed it, my all time favourite musical!

The Pirate King is SUCH a spectacular character that he even has the first part of his chapter in the medley remix sung for him by the chorus, & gets to come onstage with two lovely assistants! THAT'S how good Jon English's performance is!

I love all G&S....but this production is the best ever. Great staging, performances and absolutely electric. Bravo.

Parents took me to this when I was about 6 or 7 years old at the Lyric Theatre in '94. Even at that age I enjoyed it! They were recording the one I saw, so maybe I'm out there in that audience somewhere! Rest peacefully, Pirate King.

Aunque pertenezco a una cultura musical distinta, esta versión de Los piratas de Penzance me hace tan feliz, me sirve de medicina para la melancolía, que solo puedo decir gracias a Jonh English y que la tierra le sea leve.

Thank you so much for posting all this. What a fantastic version. (By the way, Ruth's 'pilot/pirate' number is missing from the playlist. Not a criticism - just letting you know).

Well that was fun. I enjoyed Pirates a lot more than their Mikado. I don't like the trio replacing the women's chorus - but it worked better in Pirates than in Mikado. The cast is outstanding though. Jon English is also much better as the Pirate King than as Poo-Bah. What role does he play in Pinafore? I would enjoy seeing that production if you have time to upload. Thanks for sharing. These productions are really fun.
