The Black Spot was essentially a tracking device so the Kraken was hunting him. Elizabeth tricked him by kissing him and chaining him to the ship so the rest could escape as it was only after Jack. The frustrating part is it would take like 10 seconds for her to explain it to Will but she just doesn’t

Frustrating, but if Elizabeth explains why she kissed Jack then she admits to killing him. If she doesn't explain, then Will continues to think she was in love with Jack.

Fun fact, the cast didn't know about Barbossa's return, so their reaction in the final scene is completely genuine.

Once, Jack became the captain of a ship named "Wicked Wench" (the story of which will be featured in one of the upcoming parts of the movie). Later this ship was burned and sunk. Jack made a deal with Davy Jones for the "resurrection" of this ship. When Jones raised it from the depths, Jack gave the ship a new name, "Black Pearl," because it was charred

The black spot was also part of the "Treasure Island" novel, it's a mark given to pirates to mark them for their imminent death

Odd comment, but as someone who only discovered your channel upon seeing your potc 1 reaction pop up, I love your laugh. Its just so jolly and genuine, like a solid bloke laughing at a good joke in a pub

One thing the first 3 movies do incredibly well is world-building (...we don't talk about 4 and 5). So much lore gets established, like Jack's P brand shown in the first movie as a one-off and then revealed to have been given to him by Lord Beckett in this one.

Honestly if 5 didn't mess up the compass lore (changed completely the story of how he got it) it would've been a good redemption movie for the saga in terms of story. I don't hate 4, it is just less spectacular after 3, because it is like an episode apart, just another different adventure with sea and mythic lore

@@youtubewontletme I didn't think the third movie was all that great to begin with. The Calypso plotline was kind of odd, there's really no reason the new Dutchman captain had to have their heart removed too (phrasing it that way to avoid spoilers for Adam), and Davy Jones' locker was bizarre and went on for way too long. But it's still better than the rest of the POTC franchise.

31:50 That's what makes Jack such a phenomenal character across the first three films, and a lot more lackluster in the final two. Jack isn't really the main character of the original trilogy, Will and Elizabeth are. Jack is an incredibly well-written morally gray supporting character in the first three movies, while 4 and 5 try to cast him as the lead. It's a lot harder to have such a morally gray character as your central protagonist, especially in a Disney movie, so Jack is much more of a 'good guy,' though still somewhat questionable. Unfortunately, it ends up kind of deflating a lot of the interesting aspects of his character later on.

I prefer the first one for the story, but I like the characters added in this. Davy Jones is actually quite sympathetic when you learn his story and the actor is amazing as he always is (He was Victor in Underworld). Beckett is such an easy character to hate hahaha, shows how good an actor he is. And it's nice to see him reunited with Keira Knightly after being together in Pride & Prejudice

Jack Sparrow and Cutler Beckett's history was originally going to be explained in the 3rd movie, but they ended up cutting the scenes from the final version of the film. You can still read them in the screenplay, though, and we got to see it in a book that came out in 2011, The Price of Freedom. Click Read More if you'd like to hear about it; Jack Sparrow was originally a merchant sailor for the East India Trading Company, captain of a ship named the Wicked Wench. He worked for Beckett for about a year, transporting all varieties of cargo, but refusing to carry slaves on his ship. Eventually Jack double-crossed Beckett when assigned to locate a certain treasure on a hidden island, claiming he couldn't find it and refusing to give up it's location. Suspicious of a betrayal, Beckett demanded that Jack transport a shipload of slaves across the Atlantic, which he originally accepted, then took them to that same hidden island and set them free. Jack was jailed for several months, then branded as a pirate and forced to watch as Beckett's men burned the Wicked Wench. Jack dove into the sea to try and save his ship, but nearly died in the process. He then made a deal with Davy Jones, transforming the Wicked Wench into the Black Pearl and gaining 13 more years of life in exchange for his soul and 100 years of service once the time had run out.

The Flying Dutchman is legendary ghost ship, first appearing in literature in 1790 with no records surviving at least that show it ever existed as an actual merchant ship. Though it's believed it was a ship of the Dutch East India Company named "fluyt" that sailed in the 17th century. The Flying Dutchman was seen right up into the 20th century, and was considered a meaning of doom.

The steam engine you’re thinking of was called the Flying Scotsman, not the Flying Dutchman. The Dutchman is Davy Jones’ ship in pretty much all stories about him 🙂

I love when bar fights start spontaneously in media. One of my favourites is in Red Dead Redemption 2 where Charles, one of your gang, just picks up a chair and lobs it in no particular direction 😂

I like this movie a lot but it definitely isn't better than Curse of the Black Pearl. That movie was such a perfected clean package whereas this is only part 1 of the story told across Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. I will say however, Davy Jones is a brilliant villain and one of the best examples of old CGI managing to hold up well. His theme song is amazing, his story is really interesting (though most of that is explained in the next movie if I remember correctly). And his Kraken is a formiddable threat. The highlights for me have to be the scenes aboard the Flying Dutchman and the 3-way swordfight between Jack Will and James. I do wish some of the scenes weren't as cut down as they were, especially the one that would explain the game of Liar's Dice that Will challanges Davy Jones to. But it's a long movie already so I get it.

I agree the first movie is better than this one. The third is my favorite of the trilogy. The visuals are even more stunning and I really enjoy where the story goes. Loved your reaction! Looking forward to At World’s End.

I got a jar of dirt. I got a jar of dirt. And guess what’s inside it. lol I love your edit between asking if Jack is lucky and then hard cut to him falling through the bridges lol. “Liar’s Dice” is what the game is usually called, but after this film, people started marketing it as “pirate’s dice” and selling themed sets of it. For me personally, this is the only Pirates movie I’ve watched repeatedly and the only one that really exists for me. The first was obviously epic in its own ways, and then the later ones start falling off… but this one just feels like perfection to me. The acting, the script, the comedy, the costume and set design… it’s all just so well done. I miss the era of Disney when they actually made awesome live action. They couldn’t make this same exact movie today because it’s sexist and violent and has a flawed lead and a joke about men wearing a dress and probably some “micro-aggression” racism and so many other things that are just pure evil now. It’ll be scary to see what the latest new version is. I’ve pretty much lost hope in the company.

I mean, to Jones perspective, he just made a deal with Jack and wants his fair share of the agreement they reached. Then Jack did not comply, and went on a hunt to kill Jones (or at least bargain with his life), Jones is in his rights to be mad at the situation

i'm so glad you still really enjoyed this movie! i personally disagree, i think this movie's better than the first one. i know you touched on it already, but seriously, the visual effects on davy jones are so gooooood. this movie's nearly 20 years old, and the cgi still holds up to this day. not to mention *the soundtrack*. i still just listen to the soundtrack for this movie in my own time, davy jones' and the kraken's especially. the feelings those tracks inflict on you... man. really looking forward to the third, and then the next two if you're so inclined!
