I know, that line is so cold. And Will plays Jones like a fiddle, knowing his pride, and his reputation as a captain are on the line if he doesn't accept a second time. Jones is playing Liar's Dice, Will is playing 4D Chess. That one line show's how clever and dangerous Will Has become since the first film, and the fact that this scene got cut down is a crime against nature, humanity, and the laws of physics.

@@Luxord5294I think it's probably because although Davy Jones is indeed ruthless, he is a man of his word. He almost always does his part of a deal without any tricks. Besides, losing a single crew member isn't that big a deal to him, he can always raid another ship and get like, five new ones. To give an example, that 100 soul bargain he made with Jack. Although he did set Jack for failure I do think that if, by some miracle, Jack managed to collect and deliver 100 souls, Davy would let Jack off the hook.
@Luxord52942 ай бұрын
@@pedrourbano501 That's true however Jones clearly likes stacking the deck to his advantage, which detracts from him being a man of his word. Holding Jack's soul against one hundred is clearly a sucker's bet, there is no way Jack could even hope to claim that many in only a few days, or telling Will he could leave "the next time we make port" which would be in ten year's time thus really negating Will's freedom. Hell his whole shtick of recruitment is by attacking random passersby and essentially shanghaiing them into selling their souls to him. What he doesn't say is that he won't actually release them since they become part of the ship which he clearly doesn't tell them at the time of the deal. It's pragmatic what he does, and honestly shows he is a man to be feared in more than just martial prowess, but it does show that he has no problem offering wagers and deals in bad faith; where he holds all the cards and the other has little prayer of succeeding.

This was so much better than the theatrical cut. Unlike what the directors said, I don't believe this made Jones look in any way incompetent, because this isn't just a game of competence. It's a game of luck. You can tell that he's lost this game before, and his humanity shone through when he simply congratulated Will upon his win, adding more depth to his character. The stakes also become far greater when you understand the game and realize how slim the chances of winning it twice against a man who has essentially nothing to lose in it are. So Will challenging Jones again would've been incredibly tense seeing it for the first time, and Bootstrap risking his newly won freedom to protect his son hits far harder than it did when he was already set for decades of service. Everything about this cut scene made it better. Sometimes Hollywood really has no clue what its doing.

@ratemal77488 ай бұрын
I would say the theatrical cut did suit it better: First, the first game feels completely pointless from a plot standpoint. It adds nothing to the movie. Winning "freedom" for his father accomplishes nothing either: What is he going to do, swim to the nearest port? The only (seemingly) feasible way to really free him is to kill Davy Jones. Second, the way Jones plays the second game does suit him way better. Both games were decided by skill rather than luck. In the first game Jones plays in a very dull way and gets outplayed hard by Will, in the second game he actually plays like the devil he is. (also, getting four-of-a-kind twice in two consecutive games feels a bit too ridiculous)
@ulfberht44314 ай бұрын
@@ratemal7748 I’m afraid I have to disagree on a lot of your points. Whether it adds to the plot or not doesn’t matter because, even if it doesn’t, the story is already bloated and convoluted anyway. Sometimes a break from the story to add more lore and story can help benefit the story further. Your first point is a bit of an unfair way of seeing it. While it may not add to the story, it at takes a break from the already massive story, plus it adds more to the lore and it helps audiences to give more context to the game of lair’s dice. And your point about how Bootstrap is free but has no way to get off the ship is a completely moot point. If you’re gonna say that the first game is pointless but then bring up something trivial like “how is he gonna get back, swim to shore or something?” then you need to reevaluate your argument a little better because that’s an irrelevant statement. Your second point shows that you really don’t understand (or even care) about character perspective from a thematically point of view. I agree with the first guy’s comment saying that it shows a bit of humanity in Davy Jones and even if it’s “dull” to you, it’s a more realistic way of showing Jones’s character. Both games show a side of Jones that you completely missed. The first game, he was not desperate to win because the stakes of loosing a crew member matters little to Jones. That shows that human lives don’t matter to him, he doesn’t care if they are free or if they serve him. But when the stakes turn on something he holds dear, that is when he’s desperate. That’s why in the first game he played “dull” because even if he lost, it didn’t matter. Loosing to Liar dice with stakes that low to him doesn’t hurt his pride.

As someone who has played a lot of Liar's Dice, it's really interesting to analyze just how precise the writing of the game is and how it reflects the characters. Turn 1: Bootstrap makes an unassuming opening bid. Turn 2: Jones makes a safe but deceptive bid to gauge his opponent. Turn 3: Will, the one with the most at stake, makes a cautious bid that tells his hand. Turn 4: Bootstrap makes a bold bid in an attempt to force Jones into a corner. Turn 5: Jones reveals his advantage and uses Will's previous bid against him. Turn 6: Knowing he has lost, Will refuses to surrender and makes a hail Mary bid. Turn 7: Bootstrap makes a desperate bid to save his son. Turn 8: Jones confirms what everyone knows and calls Bootstrap a liar.

I just want to point out 1 thing: Bootstrap throwing his own dice in AND taking control of the turn order with “your bid captain,” meant that no matter what, Will wouldn’t lose. In this game, you can only call someone a liar on your turn, which means you can only call the player immediately before you a liar. Even though Jones knows Will is lying with his 8 fives, just through deductive reasoning, he can’t call Will a liar cause it’s not Jones’ turn. And we all know Bootstrap would never make Will lose. So before the first bid, Will’s already won.

Let me get this straight. You have to make a guess of how many of whichever side of the dice in total is facing upward. If you guess right you win, if not you lose. But also, if you think your opponent is wrong you can call them a liar. If you’re right, you win. If you’re wrong, you lose. Do I have that right?
@chancecomic15952 жыл бұрын
Basically, ye. You call that a certain number of any particular face are on the board. If your call is less than or equal to the number of that face, your call is valid. If it's more, your call is invalid. On your turn, you can either name the previous player as making an invalid call (ie. Naming them a liar), or make a higher bid (Different versions of the game have different methods of doing this, but the movie works like this: By calling a higher number of the previously called face (eg. two 4s to three 4s); By calling a higher number of a different face than the previous bid (eg. three 5s to four 2s); or By calling an equal number of a higher face (eg. five 3s to five 5s)) You only win if you correctly name another player as a liar (Eg. Jones naming Bootstrap a liar for calling "twelve 5s", despite there only being seven 5s on the board, 7:08), or if another player incorrectly names you as a liar (Eg. Will being named a liar for calling "five 6s", which was the correct number on the board, 3:27). Lord Ravenscraft has a really good breakdown of the scene from a gameplay and character perspective, I recommend that kzbin.info/www/bejne/imWXfaiuma1jn9k

It's a game subject to many custom rules. Sometimes 1's are wild cards and can function as any other. Theres also an option of calling spot on where if exactly the amount of the most recently declared bet is true every other players lose. Usually I see this game played where everytime a liar is called the losing party loses one of their remaining die. Obviously that too many rules for a movie clip so many of the nuances of the actual game were chopped

Not quite. You bet that there are at least x many dice facing number y, and the next person has to make a different bet, with a ln x equal to or higher than the previous, and/or a different y. If you think that there are few y dice facing up on the table than the x bet the previous player made, you can challenge them by calling them a liar and reveal all the dice. If the bet was over, they lose. If the bet was equal to or under, the challenger loses.

All this game is, for those wondering, is a dice version of Bullsh*t...but the stakes and wagers can be higher BASED off of the number of faces (6 being max faces) and how many of those faces are in play (a max of 15, when there are 3 players, a max of 10 when there are 2 players; 5 dice a person). Example: Will wages five 6's, believing intently based off of Jones's previous bet that he had another 6, making that wager of five 6's true. Jones is thinking 'liar/BS' because of the previous bets of the bluffs. Will bets three 3's, and when he throws out 6s from nowhere, it sends Jones into the doubt he has ANY 6s, when in reality he had one 3 the whole time. Jones gets played good by Will Turner, and reveals HE was bluffing all along. So, the game is very much like Bullsh*t (the card game): you throw out your bets face down into the discard, wagering you had up to 4 of a number/face card. If someone guesses BS on your wager, you take your cards back, AND EVERYTHING beneath it. But if your wager was TRUE, they take your cards and everything beneath it. The objective is to lose your whole hand first to win. The reason this game Liar's Dice is so good is because instead of there being ONLY 4 possibilities in play and trying to lose your hand, there can be over DOUBLE the amount in play (based entirely off of the number of players), and your goal is to make bluff/truthful wagers against your opponent and have them guess WRONG (in either scenario.). If they're wrong about you being truthful in your wager, you win. If you're bluffing and they miss the opportunity, but you call them out on THEIR bluff, you win. But, if you bluff and they call you out on it (like Bootstrap-Bill Turner), you lose. Pretty neat game. I wonder if sailors used to play it, and isn't just some made-up game inspired by other dice games JUST for this scene xD Wouldn't surprise me, actually. Such a cool and underrated scene, IMO, of the entire franchise.

I play Liar's dice since 2019 and only now I realize that Bootstrap could have upped the bid to eight sixes. In the worst case, he would have still lost without making it too obvious. It would have even worked if Jones had a pair of sixes in his hand and ones counted as wild.
@Just_a-guy11 ай бұрын
At that point everyone knew what is in the table (this is why Jones said welcome with Will bet eight 5s). Bootstrap basically said "i had five fives the whole time" to ad salt into it and make sure Jones will call him Liar and not Will (not certain if they can call someone not from their round liar)

Why didn't bootstrap turn back to normal as soon as he was free is what I wanna know
@jaycee20402 жыл бұрын
I think their appearance is due to the influence of Davey Jones. Like Calypso stated later he corrupted his original purpose: to guide fallen seaman to the afterlife. Even though Bootstrap was freed, Davey Jones did not drop that "illusion" appearance, if we were to give it a name. *Spoiler below, if you haven't seen all the movies yet* When Will becomes the next captain of the Dutchman, you see all the crew immediately lose their sea creature appearance, which leads me to believe that's one of abilities granted among unknown others. Will obliviously has a different outlook than Jones.

I really wish that the "Spot on!" rule was a part of this match. For those unaware, if a player believes that someone's bet is spot on (and it's his turn), he can say so, and if he's right, everyone else loses a die. If he's wrong, he loses 2 dice. Obviously, since this is an all-in round, Will would have won outright.

Bootstraps move was brilliant. Because you can only accuse someone of living on their turn. He entered the game in such a way that Jones can never accuse his son of living, only bootstrap himself. In essence: the game was rigged from the start.

How do they cut this scene? Davy Jones reaction to his loss added so much depth to his character.
@joewhitehead34 ай бұрын
For the sake of the runtime, I’m guessing
@JohnSmith-vk9dsАй бұрын
@@joewhitehead3 From what I have read elsewhere, it had less to do with runtime, but because one of the other producers--either Chad Oman or Peter Kohn--that felt that showing Davy Jones lose a dice game to Will would make him seem incompetent. I commented the same thing above a while ago, but if there's anything in that movie that was left in that makes Jones seem incompetent it's Will Turner sneaking up on him in his sleep and comically lifting his tentacle beard to swipe the key from it. There's so many other places where you could cut 3 and a half minutes if runtime was the primary concern.

@Mustang-wt1se Жыл бұрын
It also explains why Jones was so surprised, he didn’t expect Bill to throw away his freedom as soon as he got it
@ulfberht4431 Жыл бұрын
Why is this scene in particular unnecessary? To me it adds more development to Davy Jones’s cunningness and psychopathy, as well as his particular philosophy of how he can both manipulate a person and make them feel inferior because of how much he relishes in their desperation. It’s that level of villainy that you don’t see often. If they left that in, then it would’ve made Davy Jones 10x more badass and cool than he already is. It also adds more on how Liar Dice is actually played, at least this version of it. The theatrical cut only gives a brief understanding of the game, which is a shame because liar dice in the real world is actually very fun. I’d say it was necessary to add drama to Will’s desperation, extended Davy Jones’s personality and gave a bit of rules to a very underrated game.

Is every little wager enforced by magic or a curse? Even if Will had lost the second game, what would have stopped him from just leaving anyway?
@mileskessler29052 жыл бұрын
It's not magic, just honor. Once you've cast your dice, leaving is cowardice. You see the hand through or no one will interact with you. At least in the movie, irl people forgive(mostly).
@mileskessler29052 жыл бұрын
Sorry, that was vague. In the movie, the stakes of the game(lives pledged to servitude, the key to a demigod's(Davy Jones) weak spot) make backing out impossible. To do so would mean Jones (who technically as the captain "owns" the crew) would make Will's life hell, or kill him for breaking his word. In real life of course dice is just a game and means nothing.

So I can understand why this scene was cut down. Even in the theatrical cut, the pacing of the movie is quite slow and this would've slowed it down even further. But MY GOSH everything in this scene is so good. So much good Davy Jones material and fantastic CGI. Ugh it must've been agonizing for them to cut. I still think it would've been worth leaving in.
@JohnSmith-vk9ds9 ай бұрын
I can easily think of 6 minutes elsewhere in Dead Man's Chest that I would have cut for length before this scene, so it wasn't about pacing or run time. Allegedly, it was one of the producer's that wanted this cut down because they felt that showing Jones lose a game of dice to Will would make him seem incompetent. Frankly, I think this scene does the opposite, and that if anything in that film makes Jones look incompetent it's Will turner sneaking up on him in his sleep and comically lifting up his beard tentacle with a wooden dip pen that he holds steady in his teeth to grab the key from underneath it.

I prefer the way the directors did it. Why would Will have a second game? The debt he was "sent to settle" is Sparrow's problem. The whole point of Will staying on the Dutchman was to free his father, and he did that with the first game in this video. Will hadn't declared his 100 years before the mast, so he can go free at this point. Why look for the key? It makes Will look like a badly written character.

With this context, Bill saying "its your turn captain" has extra bite. He was already free to go. By continuing to call Jones "Captain" the way he did, Bill showed his hand. Jones knew this, too. Bill was rigging the game against Jones, but Jones was still (in a way) winning.

Will's actually pretty smart here. He understands that although Davy Jones is far from human anymore, he has no reason to suspect he can change the dice at will, and since nobody would DARE challenge Davy Jones himself, he's likely well out of practice/inexperienced, leaving them equally matched.

Imagine how fucking sick it would’ve been to see Davey Jones say “seven fives” and then Will counters with “Spot-on”. The rest of the movie would’ve still involved the race against the Dutchman, except Davy Jones’ emotional investment in the stakes would be in a lot more interesting context (The devil’s been bested twice and now he’s absolutely pissed). I would’ve had the major twist be that Will actually succeeds in stabbing the heart, unbeknownst to the fact that that now makes him the de facto captain of the Flying Dutchman. Then the third movie could be about finding a way to break the curse completely, while Will struggles with his role as captain and his crew begins to grapple with the prospect of losing their immortality permanently. I’m now angry that we don’t live in the timeline where this series was written like that.
