If I could crawl through the screen and give you a big old kiss I would! I’ve been dealing with lower back pain for 8 years and after countless doctors, MRI’s, X-Rays, injections, physical therapy, chiropractor treatments, etc, I was still in so much pain every day. I finally found a new doctor who diagnosed me with Piriformis Syndrome and I’ve been trying all different finds of exercises which helped a bit but never gave me any relief.Well I just did this for the first time and I could feel that knot let go and once it did, the pain went from a 9 down to a 3! I’m going to do this a few times a day to get that muscle to let go forever but thank you so much! You’ve just changed my life!!

This video hit the nail on the head. I’ve been suffering for a week now with my hip the back of my leg and the pain going down my leg and what seems like down into my knee and my shin. I thought we’ll maybe it was my sciatica nerve, but there was something different about it. This was brought on by me sleeping on a couch for a week. I was housesitting and all the bedrooms are upstairs and I chose not to sleep up there because I’ve had back surgery about six months ago and I’m still healing and I hate the stairs anyways. But my last night of housesitting I ended up with this pain in my hip, I thought it was coming from my back but then the pain went down to my leg. So I’m glad I’m the type of person that likes to research things and I’ve come back to your KZbin channel with many things and I’m happy to say that you are right on. I don’t have a lot of money to go to a chiropractor so I won’t go. I do have a physical therapist, but if I can correct this at home then I will do that. Besides,I go to a physical therapist to help me learn new stretching techniques that I follow up at home anyways with. So I am going to finish your video and give this a try. Thank you Dr. Mandel.

Thank you Dr. Mandell, I'm definitely going to try this. I woke up Tuesday morning with horrible pain in my lower back and hips. It went from pain to worse pain and stiffness. I can't even reach to clean up using toilet. I'm taking huge amounts of pain killers just to function. I ran out of Humira two months ago, taking for Ankylosing Spondilitis, while waiting to meet with new Rheumatologist. Then on Tuesday I noticed some severe redness on my abdomen, which was diagnosed as Cellulitis. Dr told me I couldn't restart the Humira until finish the 10 antibiotic. In the meantime I'M FALLING APART! I can't bend over to reach the floor, and getting up from a seated position is hell. Hope this exercise will help. I'm soooo busy this weekend with two important events to lead on Sunday. Thanks again.

That's awesome. I've been doing this stretch for 3 months now, and my pain is less, but still becomes excruciating when I put weight on my leg and try to walk. Sometimes I can make it like 30 feet before it hurts, but then it hits me like a freight train. Every night I do this stretch, plus a few others, but it seems to only have minimal effects.
@jonl2078 жыл бұрын
Bryan, then you probably don't have pain due to piriformis syndrome. Perhaps it's a bulging or herniated disk. Have you tried exercises that are similar to a cobra pose in yoga (lie on stomach and arch back)? This is supposedly good for this. Again, there are other videos regarding this issue. My issue was piriformis syndrome, I'm sure.

Thanks, Dr. M. I tried this last night after I struggled into bed, and it seemed to have some favorable effect, so I got out of bed and lay down on the floor to give it a more wholehearted try. It seemed to work, and I got back into bed. I applied ice for about a half hour, and I'm much more mobile this morning. I had spent most of the last 6-8 days with a foam roller, yoga, and elaborate stretching, and none of these seemed to be noticeably helpful. However, your technique resulted in a 75-80% improvement. I would recommend this method to others enduring pain in the same area of the body.

I am suffering from Piriformis syndrom right now. I have severe multi level spinal stenonsis, and one area is the L5 & S1 area. I'm not near as active as I used to be because of this stenosis and arthritis that has developed. But I have been managing it with a chiropractor, ice, and Ibruprofen when needed. But now with the Piriformis area inflammed, there is really little what my chiropractor can do. But it is crippling pain. I have been on ice packs, anti inflammatories, pain killers and muscle relaxers for just a couple days now. Not much of improvement, if any at all. It is exhausting because I cannot sleep. I can walk about ten steps and that muscle cramps up and about brings me to my knee's. I pray...these meds kick in and the inflammation goes away. Very, very painful.

Went back to physio and told them what happened and they agreed that I probably reinjured my disc. Started doing the same exercises as before (Mackenzie method) but it hasn't been working and I've barely slept. Found this video and gave it a shot because it felt like the pain was different. Wow did this really make a difference. Maybe I didn't reinjured my disc but my piriformis became extremely tight because the shoveling was the first bit of excercise I've had in months. We need more men like Dr Mandell, refreshingly direct non-ego based, excellent style, i would be surprised if my instinct is wrong here. Interesting physique - wonder if Dr Mandell is a combatant?

Dear Dr.. many thanks again for this great advice: it is so good to hear this from so positive a person - you have helped to dispel the mystery of this awful pain. Again my thanks, and by the way I love your US pronunciation of 'buttocks' - we say it very differently here in the UK. Again,,,, my thanks. John

@@motivationaldoc Use a tennis ball, or base ball, it's more effective.

Oh Thank you! I will be do this ! I have suffered with Sciatica for years, to the point where ?I couldn’t walk sometimes and to go the Er. 4 bulging discs. No Dr either Chiropractor or regular MD has ever said anything about the Piriform muscle.

Thank you Dr Mandell I used a tennis ball and it helped immensely. I was recuperating from surgery in 2014, for Ampulary Carsinoma the period in hospital, plus time recuperating at home left my muscles in a mess. I have been doing walking on the treadmill but every time I do abdominal exercises, or more strenuous housework vacuuming it lands me on my back with muscle spasms and I can’t seem to break the cycle. I feel beaten. Please make a video on recuperating muscle mass. I’m 63 and trying to feel good. Thanks again 🌺

just found you video. Thanks for putting it out there. One question, for someone who has a full hip replacement, what would you suggest instead of crossing your leg over the other knee and pulling back to identify the piriformis muscle. Any suggestions on other exercises that also might help? Thanks again!

OH.....MY.....GAAAADDDDD This video was so dang helpful! I ended up using a very soft baseball and leaned up against the wall using it. What a difference that made!!! I am NOW able to lift my leg up without experiencing any discomfort.

Sandra Morton I’m having the same issue, can you explain what you did to get rid of it?
@flsandye46395 жыл бұрын
@@cedzellars3051 I found that by using the balled fist and knuckles doesn't work for me so I found a soft ball (similar to a softball or tennis ball). I lean up again a wall and place the ball on the area of discomfort and apply pressure on/off. Simple. I have to stay on this consistantly because I do a lot of sitting. I hope this helps you :-)

Thank you for your Piriformis video it works for me. I have suffered for over 5 years with really terrible painful feat. They feel like I have walked in the snow barefoot and my Doctor just gives me OxyNorm for the pain. When I explain my problem with my feet he thinks I am mad. At least I now know what is causing this condition I have - BIG THANKS

I’ve had sciatic like pain for awhile now. Seen doctor and got tests done to be sure it’s nothing more serious. Never got a call back which is positive up here in the north but I am convinced it is Piriformis. I use ice a lot and it helps, doesn’t hold me back from doing my physical job or playing with my son but it’s rather a nuisance at times and makes me feel like I should hold back on exercises or running too fast. I never take pain meds for this, not wrecking my life yet but sure like it to go away and be left assured that I can go back to working out. So in saying all that, is it safe to continue working out my upper body, lower body too, or just some or none? Thank you Doc or anyone who has past experiences with this. Rolling on my acupressure ball on the buttocks has been helping too after seeing this video and realizing it can be done.

I would like to know, can this exercise damage the nerve? Putting pressure on the nerve? Can't that squish it?
