I don't know about his case but being born within 2 miles of Brixton and Peckham next to the, existing, largest Council Estate in Northern Europe,I never knew any working-class family without 2 parents with (to varying degrees) the Dad giving emotional, practical and financial help to the Mum. In those same areas by the Mid-1970s, only around 40% of children had that benefit and that percentage got lower and lower. You, rarely, see this in West African, Asiatic, Jewish and Chinese families where 98% of kids are still given the "best possible chance".....

Absolutely. It's one thing to guard a gate or some such where few people but the military travel to but guarding a major tourist attraction with thousands of tourists essentially interfering with your duty on a daily basis has to be intolerable and frustrating. I'm guessing their training must include some sort of extreme hazing while being forced to stand at attention for hours at a time. They do their job remarkably well under what I would call extreme conditions.

I don't think anyone should walk behind the guard and I think this position requires a safer space on all sides. It's wonderful you can have your picture taken and that should be orderly. I have much respect for this soldier and England's traditions.

I always feel sorry for the guards. I would find particularly irritating everyone wanting a picture taken standing next to me, even if they were just standing there, while I'm required to stand there emotionless, immobile. That takes concentration and dedication. Imagine strangers standing so close to you - it looks uncomfortable. I know I step away if some stranger stands that close to me - he's not allowed, so how do you think he feels?

It takes major guts to stand there like that with people walking behind you, to the side of you, anywhere you can't see them...knowing some of them are little jerks, like the boy throwing gang signs. As a mother of a 30 year old, this is one of the last jobs I'd want my child to have, but one I would be the proudest of if they did. Tomorrow is going to be a spectacle for the ages! Be careful and try to look around when you can so you can have memories you can tell your children and grandchildren!

@@christinetraversari6042 This is what l can't understand. Why not put the standing guards and the guards on horses behind the railings and fences where the public can't get near them? I wouldn't like to be doing that job, it might be well paid (l don't know but guess it is) but l even felt stressed just watching that, person after person posing beside you for a photo while you have to just stand there and tolerate it. You can even see it with celebrities, the constant photo taking becomes unbearable and they have to call a halt. These guys can't.

I have to agree. Back in the 70’s early 80’s I served with the Coldstream Guards and covered Buck Palace, Jimmy’s, Windsor & Tower of London. We did not have people wandering all around us as you see here. Terrorism has been around for many years, and certainly has not gone away. Having armed police officers nearby will not prevent the fanatics. Yes be on view, but have some sort of barrier, even if that barrier is distance

That's what I don't understand. 5 years ago I was in Madrid and it was Dia de la Hispanidad, some of their horse guards did a parade and they looked bloody immaculate and still I kept my distance and was just in awe of them and I'm ex British Army myself. The British Household Cavalry are even better than those Spanish guards both at ceremonial and in the field.
