I've been saying this for years, especially when it comes to the lame term 'console exclusive', for when a game is launched on one console and PC. It's just a lame, incorrect marketing term. It's either exclusive (on one system only) or it's multiplatform. I had this discussion recently and pointed out that if a game truly is a console exclusive, then by the same logic it's also a PC exclusive. Making every single PC game a PC exclusive. They didn't like or want to accept that.

In the olden days, I understood exclusivity, since the platforms had completely different architectures and games could make use of different strengths of the platforms they were developed for. But in an age, where basically every platform is a PC (or a smartphone, in case of the switch), that no longer holds up, since the only difference we see between releases is some different configs. I applauded MS for releasing all games on PC, and I applaud Sony for doing so now. Now only Nintendo is missing. Although, Emulation can take care of the latter just fine.

Yeah or back in the 80's and 90's a few years difference between when two consoles were released meant they could vary wildly in terms of what they could actually do so cross platform was difficult. Just look at a ton of the SNES/Genesis libraries. Plenty of cross platform but rarely was the SNES/Genesis version the same game despite both being called the same thing. Not even just graphical differences, like literally completely different games half the time.

The rationale for console exclusives makes sense in a "here's a bunch of money to create a draw for our system, so you're incentivized to put an your effort into making it great for that system", but the forever exclusivity never made any sense to me. Like, is there a good reason for console manufacturers not to make extra money on their investment by porting their exclusive to other consoles after 2-3 years, which is after they've made most of the console exclusive money they're likely to make from it? It's a more legitimate exercise of commerce than lootboxes, season passes and the like.

I bought a PS$ so I could play Bloodborne and Kingdom Hearts. I bought a PS5 so I could play Demon Souls, and just because the opportunity arrised where I actually could and god knows when that would happen again. At no point did I feel good about being coerced by a corporation, or felt any positive feelings toward Sony for having to jump through those hoops. The only reason I have those consoles and not the latest Xbox is because I know that anything on Xbox will eventually make it to Windows on some platform or other, whereas Playstation is a big question mark. That is not a good thing. The fact that people exist that think that is okay should make me sad, but my expectations were already too low to start with.

@@maxsun13 I am on the complete opposite spectrum. I love playing GOW and TW3: the wild hunt, but if they need to do these things to make money, then maybe they don't need to be in business anymore. And I firmly believe they don't need to do these things. They have been in business for decades, and I'm sure they're insanely profitable. They just want even more money. So I bought a pc and no consoles. Because corporations are greedy, and they want all of the money, not just their fair share. So I have no doubt I'll eventually get to play TLOU, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. Buying a console is betting against studio greed.

Sony games division makes a lot of money but they're moving games over to PC to make even more money which is good because more people get to enjoy the games. 8:46 I mean I realized this when I noticed how pre-order bonuses were sometimes console/patform-gated, KH3 being a recent, notable and perfect example, with them even repurposing the keyblade used as the Japanese 7-11 pre-order bonus, Dawn till Dusk as an Amazon pre-oder bonus and separate DLC for Xbox and PS4, in spite of it clearly being 7-11 colored and apparently it was only even available in US and Japan, meaning other regions were completely denied this item and no one can ever have all the content in the game without hacks/cheats/mods (thankfully there is a PC release) regardless.

Thank god that game was a huge letdown that changed its entire combat formula from strategy and timing into a nonstop Disneyland advertisement. Anybody who seen the preorder bonuses and region exclusivity and decided not to support the game cause of it, really didn't miss out on much. Though your point still stands, the whole practice in itself is pretty gross. That's why my only merit to what console I buy is "does it have a FromSoft game exclusive to it?" and if it does, ill wait a generation till its super cheap and buy it then.

Sony fanboys are pissed because they just got done being told to piss off by Bethesda after the Microsoft merger, told that games going exclusive to certain consoles or properties is good for the making of the game, that the corpo idiots can focus solely on building the game to meet those standards. My view on this is: Isn't there another God of War game in the works? Putting an earlier game in the series on PC with knowledge that a newer game is on the way and the only way to see it ASAP is to get a PS5 or wait three years for the possibility of it coming to PC, I still say the PC port is just an advertisement for the new game. I'm curious what stood out to you on the Steam page. I also just looked it up after seeing your comment and it just seems like standard PC Features list with all the marketing words thrown in there about how such and such fancy tech makes it pretty. Very cool that it'll have ultrawide support though people will be very happy about that. Not all of them list specific technical features of course, but in terms of their descriptions of said features it's nothing more complex than a simple marketing description. It's not like they're getting in there and describing how it works.

Maybe I’m just showing my age but I feel like there’s no point to a game being exclusive to a specific console anymore. Back in the proverbial day, game consoles were very different from each other architecturally, and games were often written to the metal. Games were written against that specific hardware and so there were often real technical reasons for a game to be on PSX vs N64, or SNES vs Genesis. Modern games don’t get written at that low level anymore. Nowadays game engines deal with the hardware through abstraction layers. (i.e. DirectX and other APIs.) But also most games nowadays are developed using COTS middleware engines like unreal, gamebryo, etc. Console hardware has largely homogenized on x86 and ARM with middleware engines being supported on all platforms. The technical limitations that used to make it cost-prohibitive to develop simultaneously for multiple platforms are no longer valid. So why NOT develop for multiple platforms?

And that's fine. However, the problem is that it delitues and devalues a platform. If they all have the same games, why not just go for a system that is more powerful and has native backwards compatibility? The new consoles are not offering anything the PC can't do, they used to stand out because of the games. Since 2015, I often forget there is even a new Xbox console since it all comes to Steam day one. It's good for the consumer but terrible for the platform/brand as it loses its identity.

Consoles are more expensive than PC, while offering 1% of what PCs can do. guess what, you don't even need to spend time to set your UI/aspect ratio( only an idiot would need a day to do that), the game detects your hardware automatically and sets the graphics settings accordingly. I'm pissy about the ports, but only because I'm being asking for a port Ratchet & Clark since the Playstation 2 ega. Personally, opening games to larger markets is a good thing. As a gamer, I love more games, especially ones as damn good as God of War. As a retired business consultant, I only see selling to a larger market as a win-win for the developers, especially when the games have already been proven to be as good as God of War, why Sony didn't do this 20 years ago, I do not know. Just one request: Ratchet & Clank, please?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And if I mod God of War, it'll be to replace the main character with Teal'c, and only after the first playthrough.

Good question in there. Maybe 20 years ago someone calculated that cost to gain of a PC port was not good. PSX, PS2 and PS3 was actually pretty specific proprietary hardware. A port of a PSX or PS2 game actually needed work. PS3 always had the problem that it was rather difficult to develop for PS3, so that Multi-platform games were developed on PC or Xbox and ported to the more proprietary PS3 Hardware. So in the end many multi-platform games did not used the PS3 hardware to it's full potential. Since PS4 and Xbox One the hardware is made be AMD and is so close to PC Hardware, that ports can actually be really simple to do, getting the cost to gain calculation looking much nicer. But maybe it has also to do with Sonys own weirdness. The "we do what we do, don't care for the rest" approach or something. Maybe also a bit of the "our Hardware that WE developed is so good, it couldn't run on a PC" sauce. For PS1 and PS2 it was maybe even thru at the very beginning of the generation life, but few Months in and PC was there. Well Nintendo never cared for PC ports either.

Nearly every PS2 game iv emulated on my PC through disks I own and have played on the console itself have come up with strange bugs and breaks that I know weren't on the console version, and most of the time when I look up a fix online, if I can find anything, it generally has a note suggesting that the reason it breaks in the first place is because developers had to use some trick to make it work properly/better on the playstation hardware, and its generally a trick that the games themselves are designed from the ground up using, so making a port for other hardware would have required entire parts of the game be made differently. (as an example in Kings Field Ancient City, the way it loads rooms is done in a specific way to improve performance, but that strange way cannot always be done properly in an emulator, leaving there to be a few rooms that simply will not load, and you have to play the emulated version without going in them, unless you really fight with it and get lucky). This is all just guessing from personal experience and what I have read online relating to that experience though, I'm certainly no expert on the matter.

Never understood whining about an exclusive going multi-plat, and I've used and had most nostalgia/affection for Sony consoles since the 90s. I would kill for a PC port of games I love like The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus so I can share them with my friends (and maybe modders can fix the dreadful performance of TLG. That would be great). Tokyo Jungle wouldn't be at risk of becoming extinct on the Playstation Store at shut-down because it's exclusive to a dying platform and would only exist via pirating and emulation. The Souls community on PC is huge, and a not-insignificant number of them haven't played Bloodborne, and even more haven't played Demon's Souls (especially pre-remake). Are people so fucking bitter that the idea of more people enjoying something you love and giving the devs more money/attention is a negative?

I'm always excited on the rare occasions where an exclusive game I've played has been made available to another console's playerbase. Recently, the Kingdom Hearts series was announced for Switch, and it made me happy that more people would be able to give it a try and see if they liked it. Sharing things you like with other people is usually a fun thing. I don't know why that had to get lost. Also, I'm not a PC player because my computer isn't powerful enough for these games, but from what I've seen, games coming to PC usually means someone will mod the game and possibly make extra skins, campaigns, or QoL improvements. That's more content for that game. That's a good thing!

It's the fact that the Switch versions of the games bar Melody of Memory are CLOUD ONLY. When the pre-KHIII games could ALL run well directly on the Switch itself and they'd take long enough for most that the Switch's successor, whatever that may be, would likely be out afterward, making the cloud moot for KHIII as well. Or, as I call it, Kingdom Hearts cloud strife. It's a case of Square continuing to be douchebags particularly recently.

@@CarbonRollerCaco Oh no, I'm well aware of the fact that the Switch can and should be running non-cloud versions of the KH games. I'm talking about the general concept of things you like being shared with other people who previously didn't have access to it.

I'm still hoping Tenchu Z someday gets a functional PC port. Let modders put every single character, object, and piece of text in mankinis if they want, I just won't download those mods.

Tenchu Z and a lot of Xbox 360 and PS3 games are a testament as to why platform exclusives are a terrible idea.

Actually mad people can view this as a negative. I'm not a PC gamer but it's a great thing. Mods will be hilarious and I look forward to seeing how far some people can push it visually with a roided up PC!

I am a Xbox person but at least I know Microsoft doesn't care about me. Also, when they put the Halo series on Steam, I didn't through a hissy-fit. I thought it was cool.
