This is a great video. I had to retire as a mechanic after 25 years due to health problems. But you know they say once a mechanic always a mechanic. I watch this video because it was one of the engines I never got to really work on out of 25 years. And I have never seen such a thorough video! I was just bored and wanted to watch a nice video. This video was better than nice. You really know what you're doing. If customers saw a video like this they would understand the reason why labor cost or very high. Anyways with that being said. This is a great video and I hope the best for you. Keep up the good work!

Great video, lots of good information! Have an '03 pilot that we bought new that, fortunately, did not have the VCM yet, so none of those problems. On it's third teenage boy and still going strong, great vehicles! Oldest boy did get an '09 Accord with the v6 and VCM. A little over a year ago, had cylinder 3 misfiring. Not knowing what it was, we replaced the plug and the boot and ran fine...for about a week...then misfired again. Kept happening on and off for about a month. Ended up not being able to troubleshoot ourselves so took it into the dealer. They pretty much diagnosed the issue without looking at it, just hearing what was happening. Basically saving my son the fee to diagnose...told it was almost certainly the rings...$4k job, give or take. Spoke with a couple of the techs about it as it was a slow day for them, and one of them mentioned trying bg moa. Reasoning was it could potentially at least buy some time and wouldn't hurt anything. Went home and researched a bit and found out about bg epr. Tried that for 2 consecutive rounds of oil changes and the misfiring went away. About 5 months back, he found out about another product that basically keeps the car out of eco mode most of the time, so he installed that. Been over a year since the misfiring started and has been running fine so far. According to him, his oil consumption went way down as well. Don't think it would stop the rings from lining up, but definitely think it loosened them up to where they could work more like they are supposed to. Personally, big believer in bg epr after that.

TO ANYONE WHO OWNS/OPERATES A HONDA VCM ENGINE: Get a VCM-Tuner or Tuner2 to disable the VCM system. This is your best chance of avoiding this problem. Even if it's the simpler manual setting version. It can save your engine. Put one on around 50k miles when VCM caused the rear CAT to fail. Ben running great ever since. Currently at 160k and still Showing 2% leakdown in each cylinder (each warm and at TDC). Cant recommend enough. Great video BTW: Hope my tip doesn't cut into your business too much lol.

I have a ‘16 Acura RDX that needs this same repair. Cyl 3 has no compression. Bought it as a CPO car in 2019 and the CPO warranty expired 13 months ago. Car only has a total of 86k miles on it and I only added 36k since 2019. Been a loyal Honda owner for 30+ years. Not anymore. Honda America declined my case for them to assist in the cost of the repair. I am convinced this VCM stuff is what caused this, since all the info I can find online is it seems to always be in cyl 1-3 when this happens. I will be adding a VCM tuner for sure after I get this repaired. Great video.

Great video. I learned a lot from it. My Accord (with same engine) is currently having the exact same issue, keeps misfiring in cylinder 2. I just keep throwing in a new spark plug because I'm not in a financial position to have this job done. Are you able to give a ballpark of how much this job costed the customer so that I could get an idea for myself? If I had all the specialty tools and a car lift at home I'd probably try to do this job myself but since I don't, I'll eventually have to take it into a shop. Once again, great video, I'm glad I was able to learn from it.

Thanks for the comment. You only need to hone the cylinder if there's no cross hatching and it's glazed. In my experience, I've never come across one that didn't still have cross hatching. If you wanted to take the extra step to hone it though, it definitely wouldn't hurt anything but there's a lot of clean up to be done after honing to ensure a clean mating surface.

Great informative video. Why not replace the pistons instead of cleaning them? I've got an 07 Ridgeline with 192k on it runs like a top. It does have a knock in the motor thats driving me nuts and I can't identify it. Sounds like a valve tap but I've checked the clearances 2 times and they are spot on. Motor runs great and burns no oil just has a loud tap at idle that goes away as soon as you put a load on the engine.
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Жыл бұрын
Assuming you have one of these J Series engines... If that sound you have is indeed coming from the head, I have seen prematurely worn camshaft lobes cause mysterious tapping in the head, they usually check out in a clearance inspection because the clearance is done when the cam is not touching the rocker arms. I'd get a stethoscope and listen closely on different areas on the engine. If it's definitely under the valve covers, next time you have those apart, look real closely at the cams, sometimes you even have to remove the cam holders to see the damage. As far as replacing the piston, if it doesn't pass inspection then we'll replace them but I've never actually come across one that's bad. It's just added parts and labor for the customer if we replace everything, the bill starts to add up fast when you do it that way.

Check your timing belt tensioner, they leak out and causes it to lose tension on the belt. It'll sound like it's rattling or knocking on cold starts and eventually sounds like that all the time until there's a load.

Hi, We have a 2005 Acura RL that has excessive oil consumption and 30 percent loss on a leak down test for number 6 cylinder ( air escaping out the oil filler cap when number six is at TDC). Compression was good on the rear bank but variable on the front bank. Leak down was steady 10 percent across the board except number 6. That motor looks almost exactly like the RL we have ( I have only just removed the intake manifold and the valve covers). I think I want to try to replace the rings on the front head but is there any way you can confirm that the VTEC motor in our 2005 RL is the same as the one in the video? Also, it has been recommended that I send the head to a machine shop to do the valve guides and seals if I attempt the ring job. Is this a good idea?

Definitely not expected Honda quality. I agree with you there! From what I understand, you are just buying more time but from my experience, once the rings are changed, they turn less over time, the problem does seem to go away for the most part. There are devices on the internet you can buy to disable the ECO mode but I have no experience with them. ECO mode is just some kind of trick tech for cylinder de-activation to save fuel while cruising.

This Pilot had the VCM motor (variable cyclinder management) which shuts down cylinders from 1 to 4 cylinders while the car is driving to make the EPA / MPG numbers look better. VCM was awful for the long term reliability of the engine : Ruined the pistons rings, causing it to burn oil, fouled plugs, kill ignition coils, wiped out the Cats, wore out the motor mounts.

@@SkillCollectorsno sir. An all day job like this is going to quote for $3000-$5000. I've had two mechanics say it might be better to just replace the engine. Less experienced mechanics might actually do it wrong and create more problems, that happens too. There was a class action lawsuit in 2013 due to the damage caused by the VCM, especially version 2 which included shutting down cyl 4. If it starts sucking up oil it can cause scratches on the cylinder wall, so they say just get an engine, sigh. But engines right now are going to run almost $10k. For anybody with these Hondas with VCM, buy the device that shuts it down, save your engine. Although it's been a while since 2013, if you bought it used, probably someone has already had to deal with it. Don't let it happen again!

Flawed VCM technology in my car brought me here. Great video. But for all, the root cause of the problem is your VCM system. Turn off VCM via a VCM muzzler to avoid this headache. In many cases this "damage" can actually be undone by disabling VCM and replacing your spark plugs. Over time the normal cycling of your engine can clean the piston rings so long as VCM is off and not allowed to continue trashing your engine. That can be the lesser of two evils versus disassembly of a factory built engine.

Is that a VCM engine?

Yep, which is said to be what causes the piston rings to turn and cause the oil consumption.

Couldn’t you just drop the exhaust take the pan off and oil pump and take the crank and pistons out thru the bottoe
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors 6 ай бұрын
No, 1) the piston will hit the casting trying to get it out that way 2) even if you could, how will you install it without damaging the rings?
@Linuxman920

Do you mean the cylinder wall. You could use oil through spark plug holes and put it in a bottle and squirt it up the cylinder walls from the bottom. I know the k series is a sleeved block idk about the j series. And I’m pretty sure I have seen it done from the bottom end maybe it works for some engines and not all. I may be wrong as well

The cast supports that hold the crankshaft in the block will impede the piston, you don't have a perfect cylindrical, piston sized opening coming out the bottom. Maybe it can be done on some blocks but I've never seen this on any Honda engine. On some engines, cylinders can be removed separate to the head and the block, for example, on many 2 strokes, the piston is installed through the bottom of the cylinder.

Experience, keeping the parts and bolts sectioned off and organized helps. But after doing a job many times, it almost becomes automatic.

If you take a nut, screw or bolt out to remove a part, once it is off, put the bolt / screw back in it's hole. Then you wont get em mixed up ;)

Why didn’t they just get a used engine instead?
@SkillCollectors
@SkillCollectors Жыл бұрын
Installing a used engine costs way more and also a used engine is subject to this same problem. This is a common issue with these older J series honda engines.

the rings on the other pistons don’t fail like these do, those rings aren’t apart of the vcm system (cylinder deactivation) the other pings fail because of the cylinder deactivation
