Pit Boss 1600 | Brisket | Baby Back Ribs | First Cook In this video I did the first cook on the Pit Boss 1600 aka "Baby Huey" and for the main voyage it did a good job on the brisket and baby back ribs. But this first cook temps were off some on my 1600 but once the temps leveled off it ran like a champ! For most of the cook it did run about 20-25° below the controller setting but I can honestly deal with that compared to large temp spikes!! I have reached out to Pit Boss about this issue on the 1600 and I will certainly share their reply with all of you in a future video! Thanks for watching!!

Great cook Ricer! Dang that meat looked good! And you are right, I'll wait a bit and see what happens with the controller issues. But like most grills, you learn how to cook with them and you're good to go. An adjustment here and there does the trick, but of course you shouldn't have to do that. I'll keep an eye out for more cooks and infor about the controller. But that shelf!.......

Thanks!! Ya the 850 and the 1150 are ready for the controller firmware update but unfortunately the 1600 has a different controller, looks similar but it is different so it might be a while before any update comes for this unit. Awesome first cook on the 1600 Ricer!! Got the same wall fan you recommended in a different video, works great.👍 I wish I could say the same for my new 1600. I've been having the same troubles as you but with the newer PID and additional problems. PB sent me another PID and grill temp probe but didn't help. PID temps won't drop when the lid is open rotating food but my inkbird clearly shows a significant drop. If it does drop it won't come back up to set temp. Now PB is sending a combustion fan. Has yours gotten better at getting to set temp and showing temp changes?? I'm hoping the fan works and it starts learning soon as my 1100 is also down waiting on a backordered controller. 😆

thought I would hit you up on the Pit Boss.... the "smoke" setting vs the cook settings. are these settings like "smoker" vs "oven with some smoke"? I would love to know what the P setting = temp on smoker. I hear its between170 and maybe 230 for smoke. My PB Sportsman 820 temp is quite different from my "meater" thermometer. usually just like you said.. my PB is lower in temp. set at 250' (and I'm outside in wisconsin) it runs 230' but you wouldn't think a digital thermometer system would care what the outside temp is and just pump in pellets to achieve the set temp. ?? another Q... does changing the chimney do anything? and playing with the open grate for temp control... is that something worth trying or does the direct heat cause dry meat.. lots of Q's.
@DeadBrokeBBQ
@DeadBrokeBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
Man I thought I replied to this one but it must not have sent Shawn! Don't open the sear plate when smoking, that will just scorch the meat. Plus every box store pit I have had never matches the controller completely on temp! I cook to the chamber temp and once I know where it typically runs I set it at the temp to get to get close to where I want it at. I close my chimney down some. Don't over think this just watch you temps and start to learn to cook to probe tender. I don't cook to any temp because meat isn't all the same! Have fun bro and again just cook and learn your pit and this stuff gets real easy!!

I really enjoy this cooker and now I am getting the controller firmware updated it should run even better! This one has just struggled getting up to temp but as far as the rest of the cooking procedure it is a fantastic pit for the price!! This is a great box store pellet grill but not perfect. Unfortunately I am still in the search for the perfect pellet grill but this one comes in dang close!!

Honestly I was a little disappointed in this review. I use a charcoal fired smoker (nothing electric on it) and was considering this Pit Boss cooker due to having to keep a pretty close eye on my temps with the charcoal. But it seemed you were constantly having to rotate the meat, and having to compensate for the differences in your temperature settings and your actual temperatures. Looks like you had to babysit this cooker as much as I have to babysit my charcoal cooker. If that's the case, I'll probably just stick with what I have. I produce awesome briskets and ribs with it, was just looking for something that required a little less tending to. I appreciate the video!

Hi Larry--if you watch more of the videos on this pit you will see that once they updated the controller it ran a lot better!! So all the new models in Lowe's have the new control head but with that said the Elite 1600 is better than the OG 1600. I am in habit to always rotate my meat just so it cooks evenly. I even rotate on my offsets or kettles. But again when this pit first came out the first batch had a programing issue. most pellet grills have a hotter side because of the fan. Even my $4k Timberline XL has temp issues. But my Lone Star Grillz pellet runs like an offset and if you got the cash that is my #1 pellet grill. Thanks for watching!

So in order to get any smoke you've gotta have it on the "smoke" setting? So after 30min or an hour on the smoke setting you may as well just throw the meat in an oven? Seems like more of a pellet oven than a smoker to me. Eta, I'm honestly interested in buying this smoker. Not trying to be a dick. Im just trying to educate myself on how it works before buying one.
@DeadBrokeBBQ
@DeadBrokeBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha well you can use the Smoke setting like I did to get a little more smoky flavor bro. I grew up on live fire so sometimes I like to hit it a little longer at a lower temp to add a touch more flavor. Maybe you don't realize that the temp is controlled with fire a lone from "Wood" pellets. There is no heating element in it like an oven. haha But anyways thanks for watching and glad I was able to help you learn something today. Have a great afternoon!!
@DeadBrokeBBQ
@DeadBrokeBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
The second part of your comment didn't show up here but pellet grills are great for beginners to learn how to cook and not have to worry about fire management. Once you get how meat renders and feel and texture then you can step up and learn fire management. Nothing wrong with starting on a drum of a stick burner but you will not wreck as much food on a pellet grill as you can on other pits!

That thing is soooo wide. If it were only a bit taller you could have a little exta headroom on the top rack for bigger items. I saw some other vids of having problems with the controller as well. I'm sure some firmware issues should fix it up. It's just sad how they could not realize that pits are coming off with wonky controllers. Maybe if it's a super isolated issue and missed their spot checks if there are any.
@DeadBrokeBBQ
@DeadBrokeBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
Ya Krash this kind of is a typical issue for all these large box store dealers!! They push pits out faster than they are ready sometimes because they are used to sending out replacement parts. But I do have faith they will address this issue and Darrin from Ash Kickin BBQ is not having these issues so that is a good sign!! I will say the more I have ran this the better it is getting. Not leaps and bounds but I see a difference!!
