My son bought this about a year ago and loves it! I spent time with them last summer and have wanted one since... Hubby had been saying we needed to replace our Grill and our wood smoker has been a royal pain trying to keep at the right temperatures as well as keeping it fueled. I am the one who grills and smokes everything. I am disabled due to my back so the smoker was torture... Mentally and Physically! I finally ordered the Pit boss today. She is replacing 1 large propane grill and a smaller one in addition to the offset wood smoker... The truck is loaded to drop all off at the dump so we can bring this beautiful baby home tomorrow morning! I have the ribs in the fridge daughter n law and son are going to face time us to help get our new baby set up and cooking. The reason I was watching the Video was to find out if the drip bucket came with this grill?

I wish I could share your sentiments. The grates crack if you look at it wrong as well as the warranted replacements. The ignition just went out and the paint is peeling.

03/13/2024 - Purple Lion - Thanks for the REAL review of the features offered on the "new" Austin XL. I have had my Pit Boss 800+ sq in grill for over 5 years now, has smoked every meat known to man on it. Up until late last year (Nov) have hardly had any problems with it except a few fires from my own fault of not cleaning as often as I should. But, the controller has finally went ka-put and the rest in my burn pot is pretty bad (the pit was always outside with just a cover). I could replace the controller for $87 and wrap a piece of tin around the burn pot but, over 5 faithful years of heavy use and it's time to retire my girl 😢. I have "eye balled" the Austin XL with envy for the last couple of years for its grill size and simplicity. And after your review have decided its time to go buy it. To complicate my decision though, is the new Onyx Edition Savanana grill. Almost the same size bottom grill but has the auger and the fire pot (with clean out) below the smoking chamber, a provided front shelf, and but it holds 2lbs less pellets and costs $100 more. So now, as much as Ive wanted the XL, I sure do like that auger and burn pot, w/clean out, being outside the smoking chamber. Hmm .....

2 hooks on the front are to hold the extra grate. I also have the old austin xl and the only thing I ever replaced was the ignitor. I now own the Savannah.

Purple Lion, it appears PB finally fixed the air gap on this version so you don't need to get the mod plate to close the gap off next to the barrel temp probe.

I just wish Pitboss would come out with a WiFi, or blue tooth to be able to use from your phone, I have a Austin XL just like this one and I love it, but to be able to just put on a brisket all night and be able to monitor it from my phone would be great, so if anyone knows if or when this conversion will be available hit me up. SHe says it has blue tooth conversion but their website does not show it.

In other news, I'm quickly warming to the idea of the austin XL onyx. Looks like a very solid grill tbh. How's the heat distribution though? I know pit boss has had issues with it in the past.

How do you make it smoke more? & do I have to prime it all the time while cooking just to get a few pellets in there just to smoke the meat cause holding that button on the digital screen on the pit boss Austin XL gets tiresome. I just got the grill and I’ve already almost worn the prime button out just to get a little bit of smoke.

I make an Asian turkey burger by adding chopped water chestnuts, ginger, and soy sauce but have never put one on the smoker. Just got my austin xl,did burn off a couple weeks ago now doing my first cook of baby back ribs. Set it to 180 but it wants to climb and sit between 225 and 250. I didn't clean anything after burn off,didn't seem necessary but could that be causing the issue? Thanks! Love your videos!

I just bought one. Was disappointed to see no wifi or Bluetooth. Guess it's not a deal breaker, can just get a probe that has wifi. I could of sworn the model I researched had the smokeit feature but I was wrong. Kind of silly we are in 2023 and they still are considering the wifi connectivity an advanced feature. Should be standard by now

Just helps bring the price point down. I personally have found I don’t care to fuss with connecting to the app. Pit Boss does offer upgraded controllers that in my experience are easy to install 😊
