Don't watch Chronicles and Riddick. Chronicles being the weakest imho and Riddick is more of the same, I doubt either or both would be a good reaction from you people. The movie isn't that confusing at all nor was it that deep. I don't know why some parts flew over both of your heads. 37:47 Jack is a girl posing as a boy. Don't think too deep about it. In the sequel she's all grown up. 38:46 Johns, the dude you dislike, is played by Cole Hauser. If you watch the show Yellowstone, he plays Rip Wheeler. He has always been a character actor. He's not in 90210. 39:33 Riddick isn't actually just a normal human. He's a Furyan. They are a much tougher race. You guys seem to forget despite initially stating that this movie was from the late 90s. The fast cuts, MTV-like shots were the thing back then. Even some of the cringy lines you pointed out are of the period. Plus this isn't big budgeted movie hence some of the dodgy CG even for that time. Vin Diesel at this point in his career isn't a big star yet. Radha Mitchell, Keith David, Cole Hauser are all just a few step above actual b-movie actors.

If you pay attention to Riddick's speech about god you'll understand his interactions with Fry better. He becomes fixated on her when she admits to trying to dump the passengers during the crash. Because he understood her and felt she might be able to understand him. He's had to sacrifice everything to survive in a brutal hostile universe. When he is taunting her to get on the ship he is genuinely intrigued about what she will choose. When she dies saving him it shatters his worldview and drives him to inconsolable grief and rage because she is the only person he has ever met who is as good as they seem and actually sees him as a person worth helping.

You both probably would have enjoyed the movie more if you spent more time watching it and less time babbling about the special effects and filmmaking. There's nothing weird or freakish about this film if you pay attention. They explain why the lighting keeps changing, because there are different colored suns. The two of you are far more concerned about trying to sound witty when you should be watching the actual movie and reacting to what actually happens. It's a shame you couldn't engage with this movie, but it's because your mouths were in high gear the whole time. I think this became popular for a few reasons. One, the plot is rather straightforward. A passenger transport crashes on a deserted, hostile planet and they must work together-ish to escape. Two, the effects were pretty good for the time, and some still hold up. Three, there was no meaningless forced romantic story. Four, there hadn't been a lot of characters like Riddick at the time. There is a great animated movie between this one and Chronicles. The third one, Riddick, is really good as a counter point to this film. Vin Diesel does some of his best acting in the Riddick movies.

Part of why this movie got a good reception and developed a cult following is because the movie is simple and honest about what it is; a classic sci-fi thriller. The 90's and early 2000s did these so well, before every piece of genre media was assumed to be prospective franchise launchers (even though yes this one did end up starting a franchise itself, but that wasn't the plan when it was first made). Honestly, seeing you guys hyper focus on analyzing the film's direction throughout the entire runtime without bothering to just sit back and try to enjoy the ride got very exhausting. Classic example of failing to see the forest for the trees.

@tnae Жыл бұрын
Is it possible that the fact that both of you seemed to miss the context provided in Riddick’s voice over in the opening may have led to unneeded confusion that possibly colored some of your thoughts? Understanding that this is a random group of people on what amounts to a cargo ship just so they can travel cheaply and that the pilot tried to cut the pod loose that was carrying all those passengers AND that Rodrick himself was being transported by Johns who was a merc, all of these things do help set up the main character arcs of our two primary characters. Anyway, I hope you react to the rest. This is definitely VERY totally different than it’s equal and the weakest of the franchise. You absolutely should watch the rest.

OK now that you've seen the movie once and is was a fun little sci-fi flick. Now go back and watch it critically, not movie critically but technically because this movie is low key brilliant. Just look at how everything is lit, they show us 3 differently colored suns and then immediately show us 3 differently tinted scenes. Without holding our hands about it they just showed us how to track locations which we need because these people really have no survival skill and revisit areas when we see the big fish eye/panorama shot with all 3 suns again but it showing they have to run all the way across all 3 areas on a crunch.

When you were criticising the colours of the movie you failed to realise that they are on an alien planet with three suns ...the light aspect would also change constantly with this it wouod be brighter snd different colours repeatedly at random times and as for the directir not having a style i think thats what makes this film amazing is he actually does have a style its excellent its so gritty it feels more realistic than big stupid hollyowood films the characters are like real people

@ScottEDawg Жыл бұрын
The change in the lighting tone is due to which sun is dominating the planet at the time. Remember, there are 3 suns, so each one will take it's turn at being dominant. When there is something shot from Riddick's POV, we see a "halo" around the object he is focussed on.
@ilovemyfriends32 Жыл бұрын
11:49 Fun fact, actually yes Vin Diesel can dislocate both shoulders to perform that stunt, however the cuffs they used on screen were too tight for his wrists to rotate properly and get all the way through is when filming, so they had to cgi the last 1/4 of the maneuver for the film. Check out the BTS of this movie, it’s actually really interesting
@beelzebub_jones Жыл бұрын
One thing i haven't seen commented on that you were questioning is Jack. Riddick never says jack is cut he said "with the girl bleeding" Jons is the one that says she isn't cut, referring to Fry. Its implied that Jack is a girl traveling as a boy because its safer. Kind of like Arya in Game of Thrones. In the sequel you will see her grown up and clearly is a girl. And that the bleeding Riddick is referring to is that she is on her period and the creatures will be able to smell the blood.

You don't have to defend the movie. It's a cult hit for a reason. Just cause they didn't like it doesn't mean anything. Truthfully, it's quite an old movie and doesn't fall in line with modern-filmmaking sensibilities For instance, neither of them even listened to the opening exposition dump, because they were focused on IDing it AS an exposition dump. No doubt they were confused by the choice and contemplating alternatives to that choice; too busy, they didn't even listen to the info.

Saying you had issues with the story but you talked too much in the review, and you missed the story arch of the captain. She was willing to kill them all in the beginning to save herself, but in the end, she took risks to save them and died for them. You failed to figure it was a craft with civilians and one criminal on board that crashed on a strange planet. You failed to realise that the creatures were hidden because of the bright sunlight ( coming from 3 suns), hence the bizzare lighting. You weren't out to pay attention to the story. I am not necessarily a fan, but I was happy to watch the movies to see how the story developed

😔 Hear me out…this deserves a “second time” watch offline. Now that you see it’s not really about empathizing with the characters or even the alien planet or monsters, rewatch it for the easter eggs that point to a study on human nature and evolution. The remains found on the planet is a big clue, and great foreshadowing. And the contrast between Riddick and the rest of the crew in terms of behavior from start to finish tells you why things go wrong for everyone else here. It’s a fascinating story from that perspective. Ironically reminiscent of a later film “Prometheus” that also touches on similar ideas. Thanks for the reaction video 😊

Wondering what the motivations were for whatever decision about they made about anything going on in the movie. Just watch a movie like normal people and stop studying it like it’s homework.
