The vocal performance in this video is absolutely soul wrenching unlike most black vocalist he doesn't scream in one monotonous manner he really tries to phrase each section differently by changing pitch, volume and altering from high's and lows and top it all off he does this with such emotion it just drives the music so well. Unbelievable performance by one of the most unique band's in the world at the minute.

Spheres of Madness, "creative".
@ThePpppt7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I quite not understand. Are you taking a piss there? Cheers.
@Moossyb7 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, yeah I am a bit. But honestly though, I prize "following the song" above creativity. You could play really creatively in regards to composition, sound and feel, but if it doesn't fit into the context of the song it won't really sound good. In Dream House the blast beats melds perfectly with the beautiful strummed chords and creates this chaos in an otherwise wistful, almost transcendental wall of sound. This really fits the composition and makes the emotional impression of the song more profound, and ultimately more beautiful. I'm not saying "don't be creative" but rather to be creative within the boundaries of the song. So in short, If you deliver what the song needs it will sound killer. Btw I'm not really talking shit about Vitek, he's fucking phenomenal (Day 69, phew) and let me tell you this, he delivered. Cheers.

I fell ashamed as a black metal fan.We are supposed to be the ones that drive change and experimentation to music in general.And yet we sit here and argue if this is post black metal or shoegaze or anything....this band produces the perfect sound of a black metal and you say it sucks because what? they do not wear corpsepaint? they are not "trve"? oh sorry i forgot they didn't sing about fascism or satan nor they raped their girlfriends with a tattoo tool. Whatever it is called...its an own style with some BM influences, not more. Americans might call it Black Metal....just because their definition of BM clearly differs from ours (Europeans, especially north europeans). I can respect different preferences and taste into music but someone who really calls this "pure" or "perfect" Black Metal clearly just does not has any clue. Take it for what it is...no matter how you call it. But in the end DH are as close to Black Metal as Jonny Cash was close to Blues & Jazz. He might took a bit of it...but still did different music.

It just feels like since they became popular, in reviews and commentary about other bands with similar sounds always seem to bring up Deafheaven, and it's annoying. It's kind of how I used to feel with Tool and prog during Tool's peak - a lot of Tool fans would tell you all day and night that Tool is THE prog metal band, and that they are the standard that other prog metal bands should be compared to. Even though Tool is great, it's annoying to see them come up when you're reading about a band you actually think is better than them, despite being in the same genre. Just to re-state; I think Deafheaven is great. I also think it's great that people who weren't previously into metal or even this specific type of metal are getting into it through Deafheaven. It's just frustrating when a lot of those fans think this type of music started when they discovered it; with Deafheaven. A lot of long-time fans think that's patently false and it's annoying to see people say it a lot. Plus there's always some animosity in some metal fan circles towards the band that brings in droves of fans that weren't previously fans of the genre, and they project onto them the lowest-common denominator among them - the guy who thinks Deafheaven is this revolutionary band that was the first to uncover an innovative new sound and that there are just a bunch of Deafheaven-copycats. That guy might not be very common, but he's definitely out there. That's just my take on it anyways. My finger isn't as much on the pulse of the metal community as much as it once was, but that's precisely because things like this seem to happen all the time. As per usual, there are *far* more comments talking about how shitty the metal community is for arguing all the time, and seemingly very few comments of people actually arguing about genres or whatever. That guy is also really fucking annoying - sees a couple buried comments of people scrapping over something stupid and then says ""oh I'm so much better than the metal community, look at those losers argue over nothing. I love this music but I'm infinitely more cultured and mature than all you other losers who love this music" and then a dozen people upvoting and agreeing "oh yeah tell me about it, metal fans arguing are so lame", meanwhile the actual argument is long gone, and we're left with what the "metal community" has actually become, which is a bunch of hipsters claiming to be better than the imaginary straw-man metalhead with his rules and pretensions that lives for arguing with other metalheads. That guy doesn't even exist anymore, but the guy that thinks he's so much better than the non-existent guy and wants to tell you about it is fucking everywhere. It's especially frustrating when two fans are having a courteous discussion about influences and, yes, labels (*gasp* what a loser) and that asshole comes in "QUIET you plebs stop arguing about bullshit like the metal losers you are and just enjoy the music like I am, gosh you guys are so pathetic". Some people like to analyze music, and more often than not it's not some flamewar argument about who's tastes are better, but just a casual dissection of how certain fans see the music. But maybe I'm just taking it personally because that's happened to me, and I do get a kick out of trying to pin down genres and influences, if for no other reason than it is fun and does in fact help me find other music I enjoy. Basically it just feels like a lot of music bloggers/journalists as well as fans on social media have never actually been to a metal show, and yet have all these ideas about what the ''other' metal fans are like, presumably based off youtube comments or their own prejudices. I guess you could say there's a fair amount of Deafheaven fans that fall into that category.

this band is pure emotion. Chaos and beauty at the same time. Its gorgeous
@eliwatchedthat10 жыл бұрын
I've never been more moved by a band as much as Deafheaven. Ever since I first got into it, I've always viewed black metal as a poetic and contemplative art form and I've never really associated moshing or violence with it at all, despite the history of its Norwegian influence. Deafheaven so perfectly captures that essence of beauty that lingers behind such a powerful genre and twists it into their own unique sound. They really know how to trigger all of the emotions at once, which I feel is a key factor to be considered while creating any kind of art.
@d1skarnate9 жыл бұрын
If you think black metal is about beauty, you are mistaken. And no, it isnt about "evil" and "grimness" either. But thats fine, you are free to enjoy Deafheaven and other such "beautiful" introspective, motivational lifestyle music. But it has nothing to do with black metal.

I think black metal is a genre that is good for conveying passion. The soundscape is so thick and coupled with the screeching vocals it really does sound passionate.

Justin Zymbaluk I used to be a death metal singer, and Ive also watched countless death and black metal vocalists in the past. Ofcourse, some form of intensity is needed in order to bring this sound out of your body. This dude is just way over the top I mean... are these movements really necessary when he's not singing for 2 minutes straight? Well maybe they are for him.. I personally prefer to just listen to the album

@TheSheer968 жыл бұрын
PAJ DrumsnGuitar Classifying is identifying, putting away the fear of the void and unknown for the simple minds and the weak ones. It takes away a huge part of freedom (speech, music writing, etc) but it holds the cattle together so I won't say it's good or bad. I'll just say it is necessarily pain for the free ones not kill the fragile ones because of their weaknesses.

I didn't really give this band much of a chance at first, but after listening to Sunbather in its entirety I regret not giving them a chance earlier. The atmosphere this band projects in both their music and live performance is amazing, who would've thought shoegaze melody mixed so well with black metal brutality.

I'm not a big fan of Deafheaven, but you metal lunkheads make me laugh. LOL. You realize black metal sounds the way it sounds BECAUSE they incorporated other influences, right? The whole 2nd wave BM atmospheric sound baiscally came from bringing in Gothic/Post-punk guitar techniques from Killing Joke, Amebix, etc. You wouldn't even know what the fuck post-rock or shoegaze is if it wasn't for bands having the balls to do something different. If you don't like it, fine, but don't act all high and mighty like you know jack shit about black metal.

bornwithclothes do you like Alcest, or Lantlos? Agalloch? All I consider better but can be roped in with this band if generalizing. This band would be better off instrumental in my opinion. What’s actual black metal?

@@bornwithclothes I like Deafheaven, I don't like Nickelback, I don't like emo. I find this stuff really beautiful and moving. I must've watched this performance a few billion times by now and I maintain my position that the magic of Sunbather is in the mixing of the vocals and guitars. It's incredibly solid live, but it's not the same feeling. Vocals do give it a warmer vibe if they're lower in the mix.

Have you wondered why that might have been? For a moment you could see his torso covered in tattoos until he buttoned his shirt up again. I’m guessing he did that (and also why he wears long sleeves) is that his tattoos are very personal and are not for public viewing. Maybe I’m wrong, but…..
