Skenes is a major problem for hitters. I couldn't believe how accurate he's painting his heat, not just throwing 40+ 100mph pitches, but continues to have a splinker that's still 94mph that breaks like a change up last second, a nasty slider that breaks other way, and then he literally paints his fastball on edges where he wants, and can make it run 2 seam style on command?!?. He really had a perfect game going in his 2nd start ever till umpire ruined it calling clear strikes balls. Mason is amazing as well and deserves all the respect he's getting, he seems like a nail in coffin type closer. Before yesterday Imanaga was on pace to stay under 1.00 which is insane but he finally had a bad game. I think both him and the "moto" from LA are the truth as well. Lots of good pitching this year, just have to see more games. On Cy young... From a betting perspective there is some value in Tyler Glasnow now that his odds are nearing +1k while his era got hit hard if you look at stats he's still the 3rd best in mlb on opp avg at .174, whip a disgusting 0.91. The biggest weakness is pitch calling (and or tipping?) that has got him in trouble a few times. They clean this up , sequence some things different maybe his whip goes up but his era will nosedive.
@PitchingNinjaVideos5 ай бұрын
You pointed out exactly why Skenes is so good. It's not just his overpowering stuff...it's his command AND overpowering stuff, plus his pitching intelligence and mound presence. He was a catcher, so he's really good at reading hitters and is a competitor.
@remnow5 ай бұрын
@@PitchingNinjaVideos I always forget that he was a catcher, those are some great points, his perspective is going to be different in a great way! that is wild to think about people running on him lol. He's the only person I clear schedule to watch right now, can't wait till next start!

We are all in agreement that skenes will likely need a surgery within 5 seasons, right? Young guy throwing 101 for 5+ innings, combined with lots of horizontal break… his lasting career would be more impressive than ANY acheivement this season.
@joshisdead42045 ай бұрын
He’s a big enough body hopefully he lasts a while. We’ve seen Randy Johnson do similar things for a long time with a much thinner frame. Not as fast no but I’d argue that Johnson has some of the nastiest movement on his fastballs ever. So I think in this case we can be hopeful. And even if he will ALWAYS have a career as a absolute shut down bullpen arm. That’s a pretty good worst case scenario if you ask me

What are your thoughts on players like Shota and Yamamoto being eligible for Rookie of the Year despite their years of experience in the NPB? It's always been an interesting discussion, because sure they are rookies in the MLB - but they have far more experience and are much more developed than rookies who came up through the minors - Skenes, Jones, Miller, Gil, etc.
@PitchingNinjaVideos5 ай бұрын
Yep--it's tough. I get the categorization. And Yamamoto is pretty much the age of a lot of rookies (he's only 25, despite being one of the most decorated pitchers in NPB history). But they're definitely not "rookies" in a traditional sense that they played at the highest level of baseball in their country. I don't like that it, by the name, almost demeans the quality of play in NPB in some people's minds...but clearly that's not the intention. It's more like a newcomer award. I do think of Skenes, Jones, Miller, Gil, etc as more true rookies in my mind, if not in terms of the award. On the flip side, Yamamoto and Imanaga do face a lot of adjustments coming over to MLB, so I get it. I could argue it either way. LOL. I'm a lawyer, it's what I do.
