I think calling the JD Martinez signing short sighted is super unfair, hes been top 5 hitter in all of baseball since signing that contract and makes nowhere near 30 million like everyone else of his caliber(not to mention they dont win WS without him), that should only be called a good deal, there were other, much worse contracts offered the last 5 years by the Red Sox that put them where they are (nitpicky complaint, i know) One thing you didn't mention about luxury tax that i think is very important to the organization with the worst farm. If they fail to reset the luxury tax this year they will begin to incur draft and international pool money penalties and they just cant afford that even more than the tax penalties. Overall I think the trade works for everyone involved, maybe there was some inconvenience for the players involved but to call it a disaster is quite the overstatement, maybe for the Angels it was but that's also their own fault, nobody made them back out of that amazing deal for them

Betts clearly felt at home after the two spring trainings to sign a contract for less money than expect, and the Dodgers got a steal. Maeda got to go somewhere where he could be guaranteed to start (he was always the fifth starter on a team that seemed to always have about eight starters, which as a practical matter meant bullpen duty at the end of the year and in the playoffs). Likewise, Stripling (who was traded midseason to Toronto) gets to go somewhere where he can start (he was always about the sixth starter in said eight man rotation). Price opted out due to Covid and a young kid at home and I forgot he was on the Dodgers (but I guess he'll be back next year). Graterol is just one face in the best bullpen in the league; Jensen is still doing just enough to keep his job for now. But even without Price, this year's Dodgers team is probably their best in decades, and considering they've won their division seven years straight, that's saying something. Of course, as I post this, they've only played one round of playoffs, which always have a high degree of randomness in to who wins.

You can thank Dombrowski for this big mess. His history is giving out huge contracts and emptying out the farm system for short term results. I guess they got the 2018 WS out of it. The Red Sox got rid of him just in time or they would have ended like the Detroit Tigers!
@larrygilpin3854 жыл бұрын
Jack Burdock Hey Jack, I’m from Detroit, and yes we are a mess right now, but things are looking up. To be honest, I’d take Dave Dombrowski back in a minute! If the Red Sox said before 2018, we are going to sign JD, Price, and Sale to win a World Series and knowing that your farm system would be completely wiped out, but you’ll get the chance to watch one of the best teams ever assembled for a year, a lot of fans in all these cities including Detroit that haven’t won in 30-35 or more years, would say hell yes! I know it’s different these days in Boston, but go back to the beginning of 2004, when you finally won again. Would you say yes then? Just sayin it’s all about winning and in fairness to Dombrowski, no deal is done without the approval of ownership. In Detroit, Illitch was the one telling Dave go get this guy. It was fun for 5-6 years here and they’ll eventually get there again, but what a great time it was even though it wiped out farm system out too. Just sayin.

Hey Dawson, what do you think of this excerpt I wrote? The Red Sox are worth 6.6 billion. The angels were smart. The Rockies were smart. Nothing you can ever trade for is worth one of the top 5 players in the game. They wont add up to, and certainly wont become players that good. The money they would spend would be worth it. On top of the statistical value (Mookie was on pace to be the second-highest WAR Sox player in history), Boston loves him as a person. Owners need to remember that baseball is not just business. It is a game, played by humans. there is something inherently invaluable about having a superstar play for a team his whole career. No excuses for not giving Mookie a 35 million-year deal. there are many ways to get around that tax. Trade price with Benintendi. They could’ve gotten to exact same package for those two. Trading a top player in the game is bad enough. Trading him because you don’t want to pay him is bad enough. Getting minor prospects at positions you don’t need players at is worse. Trading a player, a person, as loved by a city as Mookie Betts, though. That is felony

Ppl think the Sox got railed have no clue about baseball. In the original trade, yes they wouldve got railed, but in the new version they got back an elite prospect in Jeter Downs who everyone has as a top 70 prospect and a very good prospect at a premium position in Connor Wang. Both have power and speed, and this doesnt even mention Verdugo who everyone had as a top 15 prospect before getting called up. So for what is essentially a one yr rental, no guarantee Betts stays in LA, the Sox got back two elite prospects and a very good one at a premium position, catcher. Dont act like u Sox fans wanted Price around, u should be happy to be able to get out of that contract even though u had to pay half of his contract. As a Dodger fan i think we gave up too much.
@coldfroze37784 жыл бұрын
We did not give up too much lol we have Gavin Lux ready to take over the infield. With the trade our team still has a deep farm system and payroll flexibility to make more moves. “Giving up too much” is no such thing when you get a top 5 talent even if it’s just a year rental. Verdugo also got hurt which has to be taken into consideration as well to go with a crowded outfield he would have to platoon in.... so

Turner, Pederson, Hernandez, Baez, and Wood are all FAs after the season, and Jansen and Kershaw are FAs after 2021. Essentially, they are committed to approx. $120M for 2021, and $50M for 2022. They should have no problem signing any player they'd prefer, including Betts, Bellinger, Seager, and Buehler.

Right around 2013-2014 when Xander and then next year Mookie came into the league, the Red Sox had the best farm system in baseball. Now they’ve the worst 7-6 years later, incredible

Yeah, but they won a championship. Fans tend to take them lightly. But people in the game know how hard it is to win. Boston traded away some good players (Moncado) and handed out some monster contracts. But it worked. They won. 2018 World Champions. Do you get it? They won. It worked.

Red Sox trade Betts to a 106 win team for very little in return, really? You're telling me they couldn't get a better offer from anyone else? I seriously think there's some kind of special arrangement between the Sox and Dodgers franchises, look at the big trades they've made with each other through the years.

We did the Sox a favor in 2012 by taking the AGon, Crawford and Beckett contracts off their books. If the Sox want to cheap out we may as well take them.

15:03, You think Mookie Betts will go to San Diego in Free Agency? As a San Diego Native, I like that idea, but have to ask why you would think that? The Padres have only the 13th highest payroll in MLB, which is the highest in franchise history. It is hard to see the 'small market' Padres finding the money to sign Betts.

We need to get rid of will myers contract in order to sign mookie. We’re also barely above the average in total payroll. If we can get rid of myers(unless he steps up this season), it’ll be easy to convince mookie to play for us considering we did not give up everything in the the farm system in a trade for him.

@@OGTirpleOG , I agree with you. If the Padres move Wil Myers (and that bloated contract) I can see the Padres making Mookie Betts an offer. I was just curious as to why Dawson would make the Padres his FA prediction so early. I asked Dawson Wright to clarify more out of curiosity. He hasn't. No big deal. If Mookie likes the beach, fish tacos and sunshine.....the Padres have great intangibles that NO other MLB team can offer.

As someone who understands the core concepts and deeper reasoning of the trade, it’s hard to explain things to short sighted fans. For Boston, what’s more valuable given their current situation; 1 year of Betts (let’s be real he wasn’t gonna resign) and price for 30+ mil for 3 years at age 36, or a cheap verdugo for the next 5-6 years (who can be an all star) and a legit future pedroia replacement for the next 8?

I look at this situation through the prism of the sign stealing scandal. That leads me to believe that trading Betts was part of an unconventional punishment for the Sox, and if that's true then the official report will appear to let them off easy. It will also not divulge as much publicly as the Astros report did. Bottom line is that the Sox navigated this scandal better than the Astros, who may never be regarded again with respect for generations.
@tysparks5984 жыл бұрын
dude, you think MLB made Boston trade Betts because of the sign stealing scandal? that's QANON level sh*t

@@tysparks598 Baseball is now more of a global entertainment business than it is a sports business. The laws and ethics that govern entertainment are way more flexible and creative regarding "conflict resolution". All of the major sports now fall into the same category, and this is the type of wheeling and dealing that happens. This is how the sausage is made, lol. Because if you really analyze the situation; there's no way a deep-pocketed global Brand like the Red Sox lets Betts get away without a monster offer. He's a generational talent and a legit role model. He should be the face of their Brand. And he would be - - - if they didn't get caught. ;)

Here's my take on this trade as a Red Sox fan. First of all, ownership's surprise at the backlash from Red Sox fans is faux suprise. They had to know that there would be fan outrage at trading away a franchise player. Graderol's shoulder injury in the original deal only poured salt in the wound. Second, this trade was a salary dump. Yeah, the luxury tax was part of it, but not all of it. The team offered Mookie a fair deal, $300 million for 10 years, but he wanted more money and more years. Most of the high contracts you mentioned were made by former Red Sox GM Dave Dombrowski, the same guy who gutted the Red Sox farm system. Overpaying Price was a kneejerk reaction to losing Jon Lester and the fan outrage over that. The revamped deal is a little better, but there was no pitching in return. The team's biggest hole is pitching. Then after the deal was done, it comes out that Verdugo is dealing with a back injury. Bottom line, it's unlikely the Red Sox would've been competitive in 2020 with Mookie Betts and David Price anyway, so they might as well get something for Mookie before he leaves as a free agent. I was disappointed they traded Betts, but it's done. I wish him well (and hope he doesn't end up in Yankees pinstripes starting in 2021! That would be a worst case scenario!) Some fans expect the Red Sox to bring Betts back as a free agent, but I thought they would do the same with Lester when he became a free agent after they traded him to Oakland at the trade deadline in 2014. For that reason, I don't expect Mookie to sign with Boston as a free agent after the season.

This wasn't the first time Boston signed a former Rays all-star to a 9-figure deal, only for said all star to underperform, battle injuries, get unloaded onto the Dodgers, and say they were miserable playing for the Red Sox. At least Price got a ring out of it, but maybe this team should refrain from giving Kiermaier or Snell $200M in the future.

Saw this after the Series and I honestly thought that it was pretty insightful. Sure, wrong on the FA Market but 50-50 shot there and it wasn't like Betts signed 2 days later... overall, it was well done. While Mookie was a great add for Dodgers, the fact that the Angels dropped their interest in Pederson/Stripling ended being a big unforeseen factor in the playoffs as JP went almost .400 through last 3 series with 8 RBIs in some 30 at bats. Came through in some clutch moments. Graterol - insane add. Still can't stop laughing at the Graterol-Machado exchange in NLDS. Anyway, the trade looks like it has the potential to be one of the better all time from the Dodgers perspective... Gotta wonder if Price is regretting opting out of the season now?
