I have learned more about Afghanistan by watching these lectures for 2 days (just 3-4 so far) than I have from over 10 yrs of news reports. It’s ridiculous that so much of this information isn’t shared among popular news outlets to distribute to wider audiences. As it stands, I imagine that most people watching these lectures are a minority in whichever area they are in.

The coalition planners should have read about the Hatfields and the McCoys, or the Scottish Highland and Borders clan systems. They might then have had an inkling.

Gamarjoba, dear Ms Murtazashvili. Thanks for the talk, but here are some points to consider: When you say "Tajik (sic) is s dialect (sic) of Farsi (sic)", you're losing the respect of any serious scholar of philology, Iranian studies, int'l relations etc. In English, the language is called Persian, and that's especially true if you're an academic. But even if you insist on using the uneducated 'Farsi', you MUST know that this term is used to specifically distinguish the Iranian variety (not dialect!) from the Dari and Tajiki varieties, even by those ignoramuses who use the term for Persian. Your statement above is definitely and in any case false and reveals your lack of sophistication. Mind you, that was just the first minute. Going further, I noticed your tendency to be very selective in your presentation of Afghan history, and you leave out significant facts that are crucial for the understanding of the topic you're talking about, e.g. the ongoing Pashtunisation of Afghanistan under several of the leaders you mentioned (notably Daoud Khan and Hamid Karzai), the urban Tajik culture and outlook vs. the mostly rural, sometimes even semi-nomadic Pashtun culture etc. The Afghan communists were not the devout Marxists you make them appear here, but rather people with secular ideas. These nuances are important, because they explain why Afghanistan is so hard to govern and why the governmemt did not enjoy much support. There is a significant qualitative difference between the local cultures and populations, and even if it doesn't suit our Western liberal taste buds to point them out, they are evident and significant.

I know why the three top elected persons for assembly in Ghazni province were Hazara. first pashto isn't majority in Ghazni , just the district of pashto is more than Hazara but the population is less. the Jaghori( the residence is Hazara ) district population is equal with eight of pashto district. why is it like that? the reason is discrimination against Hazara. pashton have ruled in Afghanistan more 250 years and they have established for a few thousands pashto people a district. second, pashto is the supporter of Taleban and they don't believe to democracy. she got the statistics from that office which have done discrimination against other ethnics groups. those statistics are not the fact.

Only an idiot can look at those statistics and say you know what this seems right. 85% - 90% of Afghanistan can understand and speak Farsi either as a primary language or secondary(lingua franca) this includes the Tajiks, Hazaras, Qizilbash, Turkmen(Turkish speaker), Uzbek(Turkish speaker), Balouch, Kyrgyz, Arabs, Aimaqs, Nuristanis. Even Pashtuns in many areas speak Farsi some even have forgotten their Pashto language. Fix up and stop promoting false ethnic supremacist ideas.

Incomplete speech. Not a single mention of the geography of the country. The country’s relief informs its social structure, and in particular the resilience and the inevitability of the tribal structure. Who needs now, at this very juncture, a speech on an Afghanistan seemingly just discovered and worthy of a relaxed, entertaining causerie? That would have been more useful as a pedagogical lecture for the President(s) and military and political strategists BEFORE going in there blindly, singing “Got mit uns!” The USA can thank the rabid anti-Russia Brzezinski for having fallen into the Afghan trap. A mad Pole as an ideological strategist in charge of the White House foreign policy! Try to better that!
