imagine being Randall tho studying hard to graduate university only to end up working in the same position as the nepo baby sully who dropped out of collage AND cheated in the games that lowkey humiliated you (not on purpose but still) if he wasn't such a petty kidnapper I would say his disdain for mike and sully is understandable lol (plus student debt would make anyone crazy)

This might be a little late but: there were deleted/unfinished scenes of Mike and Sully knowing each other as little kids only for Mike’s family to move away and then they meet again in college. They weren’t put in due to time constraints. So technically, the line from the first movie is still canon.

People have basically rationalized the “Since the 4th Grade” line in the original movie as a sort of expression to mean “a long time”, like when people say “a thousand years ago” it’s an exaggeration. Obviously, when they wrote that line in the original film, they didn’t foreknow that someone would one day make a prequel, so…

I really enjoy this prequel to Monsters Inc. It resonates with me because I understood the struggles of Mike having to prove to the dean that he could succeed in becoming a scarer. It’s kind of a reflection of me having to prove to my superiors that I was capable of succeeding in the career I was pursuing(that’s animation btw). Monsters University is a fun film and relatable to me and I like watching it from time to time.🙂

Mike said, “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade, pal.” That joke doesn’t work if they didn’t know each other, because you can’t be jealous of someone you don’t know exists. It’s a retcon. But I’m okay with that because Monster’s University is a fun movie.

I like how even in monsters inc, you can see Mike's introverted, somewhat self-centered nature. But he fells so real because he generally wants to prioritize his own well-being, but has learned by then to suppress his own selfishness, and do what's best for others, even though he does still speak his mind quite a bit.

Fun fact about this movie is that Monster University is directed by the person who directed Pixar’s Onward. The first Monsters Inc movie is directed by Pete Docter, who directed UP, Inside Out and Soul. Pete Docter is now the Vice-President of Creativity at Pixar Animation Studios
