Just a little detail I enjoyed was how 22 got her final spark to go to Earth. Literally every famous, intellectual, and intelligent human being tried to persuade her to try, but it was Joe, a normal person with no major accomplishments, that finally did it. It’s because 22 wasn’t interested in the big, wonderful things to be somebody. Instead she was interested in the small things in life that everyone overlooks, including Joe, introduced by him unintentionally

What's interesting is that those higher beings keep choosing doctors and other famous folks to try to get the souls to embrace life. Even though the movie didn't show it, I suspect that in all the conversations soul 22 had with her previous mentors, that the mentors never stated what they enjoyed or got out of life. Soul 22 who was adamant about not living was being counseled by people who already accepted their deaths...until Joe showed up. In any case, I feel like it's one of those cases where the best education is through experience. Soul 22 was never going to embrace life until it experienced which is a catch 22 which I just now realized as I typed this sentence is very likely the reason why that soul has that number............well there ya go. Anywho, I suspect those higher beings will start picking different people to be mentors. Joe wouldn't have been the type of person to become a mentor because his life was so ordinary. Soul 22 kept pointing that out and wondered why anyone would want to go back to a life like that....a life that didn't seem worth living.....or maybe...worth watching. But I thought this was a good watch in all in all.

@@weakvsfire interesting take on the mentors. I still don't understand what you meant about the number 22?
@weakvsfire4 жыл бұрын
@@yasharora1228 Oh I might have forgotten to type what I was thinking accurately. I was just realizing that Soul 22's issue is a catch-22. This is defined as a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent conditions. Soul 22 has that problem. Souls get to go to Earth to live when they've embraced the idea of living. The only way 22 was going to embrace the idea of living would be to actually experience life. It donned on me that this is the reason why the writers named the Soul number 22. It's because of the catch-22 situation the soul has.

Part of the film's message is that purpose means different things to different people. Was it the correct path for Joe to continue teaching? Was it the correct path for Joe to play live jazz more? Neither are a right answer, and neither are a wrong answer. The point of the film ended up being not what Joe chose to do with his life, but rather that he WAS alive and needed to appreciate it all a lot more, rather than setting it all around one specific goal and considering the rest of life "meaningless". If the film would have revealed what he ended up doing with the rest of his life, it would have hammered in a definitive answer as to what career path has more purpose. I can see why people want a set conclusion, but the point of the ending of the film is that it's okay if we don't KNOW if he'll be satisfied as a teacher or not, nor what kind of life 22 will lead. Life is ambiguous at BEST. So the ending NOT being definitive makes complete sense. Life is confusing, life can suck, life is HARD. I like that for ONCE in their god damn lives, Disney/Pixar did NOT wrap this up in a NICE little BOW of happiness at the end. Because news flash...that's life. It's complex. And that's what makes it WONDERFUL. This is one of those animations that SHOWS why animated movies are NOT just for children. They don't get why adults have existential crises, or why we have questions about why we're here-they're innocent to all of that. But that shouldn't be a fault of the movie if it's not kid friendly. Pixar's _Soul_ is ANOTHER BANGER of a film, and if you didn't see the point of the ending or the thematic behind it...maybe it's best you give it another go. I myself had to watch it twice to fully understand everything going on and since I have...it...really nails what it's going for. And for the demographic, I think it really speaks to generation z and the millennial generation I feel. We know what kind of world we live in, we see the world for the most part as 22 saw it, but...it isn't all bad. Maybe we just need to start living instead of complaining about it all.

YES, like, we don't need every character to be a shonen hero defeating everyone by the end to prove that life is worth it and friendship is everything and everyone is valid (except the protag kun who obviously has to be the best fighter/musician/wathever, f the rest i guess cuase that's the only way to prove that there is meaning to life; and media is only there to fulfill power fantasies of any kind am i right?) lol. Like, if we were to see anything else after the ending, for it to be in line with the message it would have to be something fully chill and day to day like, like enjoying your morning coffe or wathever, saluting a stranger, failing in class but being happy you get to try, do we really need to see that? wasn't it clear already? and if they were to be like: Oh yeah they became the two most famous and accomplished musicians ever and then continued to mentor *selected talented souls* who will go on to *become something something great heroes/musicians/scientists/etc*, there you go, like what a slap in the face would that be lol. What a way to undermine the whole point of the movie lol. It ended were it made sense for it to end honestly. Or do we needed him to become a mentor soul in his own way? but do we need to see that? didn't he already do it? come on we don't need everything spoonfed

@jesusalejandrocruztlatelpa53534 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree with the argument of the ending not being enough, for me it was the piano scene where the whole story clicked and less became more and before he told Jerry that he "would live his life to the fullest" my thoughts went to that conclusion and it felt much more satisfying to me because I understood that there was where the story was directing us towards. Either way I do get somewhat that it needed a bit more fireworks for the kids.
@jesusalejandrocruztlatelpa53534 жыл бұрын
And imo the theme was that it's not what u do for a living, it's wanting to live in the first place. I think Jerry in one instance called him out on that aspect. So the theme of him being a teacher or soul man is secondary.

Okay... first question: Why do you assume “animation” automatically translates to “kids movie”? That’s a small minded approach to the medium, akin to saying that “spray paint street murals” can’t ever be “art”, which I can attest to first hand is just not the case. After watching it, I don’t think they actually intended it as a movie primarily directed at kids at all... Secondly, I kinda think that this movie shares a lot thematically with both “Inside Out” and “Coco”. Collectively, they all make a similar argument that there’s more to life than we really give thought to on a day to day basis. But they all also do it in very different ways, each tackling a different aspect of the three forms of argument (those being ethos, pathos, and logos, or the appeal to authority, emotion, and logic, respectively). “Inside Out” hits you in the feels (pathos), quite literally, given that the entire story is told from the perspective of anthropomorphized emotions. It points out in very real ways that focusing on just one thing isn’t something that’s conducive to growth or adapting to change. We can see this particularly (and perhaps unsurprisingly) in the fact that Joy (the main protagonist) actually doesn’t realize the importance of anyone (or perhaps anything) except herself until she’s confronted with the self sacrifice of Bing Bong and the discovery that even those moments where happiness is most powerful are often born out of sadness. Even through all this though, you can still see the message that “it’s not about you”, at least not all of the time. “Coco” makes a similar argument, insofar that pretty much everything Miguel does starts out with a selfish motivation, but ends up with him more focused on his whole family sharing in both joy and loss. (This is a callback to the end of “Inside Out” as well, with Riley’s new core memory being a bittersweet one centered around the loss of her old life and the continuing onward in the presence of family.) Coco takes a different approach though, and points out that just because someone might be “older” and/or “more experienced” doesn’t mean they are automatically worth listening to or admiring. (We’ll see this theme again in “Soul” through Joe’s mother. More on that in a bit.). Given that Ethos (the appeal to authority, remember) is the weakest and least effective of the forms of argument, this is probably a good tack. Miguel’s mother thinks she knows what is best but she’s proven wrong when we learn that she made judgements about her (late) grandfather based on incomplete information (namely, that he actually DID try to come home but was murdered before he got the chance). We also see that all the credit people gave Ernesto because of his (wrongly) “perceived” authority and talent was horribly misplaced. “Soul” adds the final piece to this whole set of life lessons by teaching us that while thinking about what we do is important, it also doesn’t mean everything. If I had to sum this movie up in one go, it’d come out something like: “Don’t take life too seriously, because you’ll never get anything fun out of it. But you also better not be late for work tomorrow morning...” (or perhaps evening, in Joe’s case.) 22 learning to love the small things is a call back to the Pathos-based argument of acknowledging emotions and taking time to enjoy them, be they good or bad. Joe’s mother being so obsessed with her shop and Joe getting a “real” job is a callback to the Ethos-based fallacy pointed out in “Coco” where blind obedience is a bad idea, but Joe’s impact on Curly and Connie is proof that sometimes having a measure of authority CAN be a useful tool to help guide people in the right circumstances. And the ending of “Soul” is that Logos-based (logic) reminder that we can and do tend to overthink far too many things. Thinking isn’t _bad_ for us, after all. It’s _THINKING_ about why 22 was so fascinated with life that pushes Joe to slow down a little and go back into the soul world after her. But the vague ending is also that reminder that we need to also pay attention to our own emotions and listen to what other people say, keeping everything in a healthy balance.

I feel like showing Connie being a performer, Joe doing teacher/ being a performer, or tying up any of the character/loose ends defeats the purpose of one of the early characters. When Joe gets his hair cut by Dez (the barber), he mentions how he didn't set out the be a barber. He wanted to be a veterinarian when he was young but live came along and he changed his plans. He says that doesn't mean he is unhappy with his life now or looks down on being a barber. Doing any of the stuff previously mentioned might have implied that people are on a set path in life. You find happiness and fulfillment in life through just being present in the world around you. The movie can't tie up anything in happy bow because that's not how life works. The characters themselves have no clue whats in store for them, just like Dez had no clue what was in store for his life. Whether or not Joe teaches or plays again doesn't matter. He could never touch a piano again and it doesn't matter. Because he is going to be living his life, to the fullest most likely. And no one, not the movie, not us, not anyone from that world can tell him what will make him happy. He decides that for himself.

I really just don't think it's your kind of film. At the end of the day this is a different kind of movie from most Pixar ones and I feel like that aspect of it is what muddled your perception of it. I feel like it's very easy to relate to Joe, and the message of the movie I took away was moreso to be thankful for your life and live it how YOU want to. Having Joe die, I feel, would have been both more cliche and more of a "please cry NOW PLEAAASE" moment, and make little sense in the world the movie has created. His joke was played for a laigh from the start, and it'd be insanely awkward to see a montage of the people Joe has affected while also realizing in the back if your head that these people are gonna realize Joe died randomly in his house and be distraught over it. I really think you went in with the wrong kinds of expectations. Not every animated movie needs to appeal to children, or have some crazy climax. Somber moments are appreciated too. Saying that you specifically wouldn't like or get it as a kid doesn't mean that other kids won't. Honestly, it's kind of a shame that people rip on this movie for being "mature", because it implies the majority of kids will not take anything away from this. In a year as crappy as 2020, I think SOUL is a great movie with an optimistic outlook on life that will resonate with a lot of people.

The entire point of the movie was that life is about the LITTLE moments, not some BIG one that has all kinds of meaning and ties your entire life together with purpose. And then people are getting upset that there isn't a BIG conclusion with all kinds of meaning and purpose. Maybe the entire point of the movie is all the little moments. Honestly, I think a big fight sequence at the end would absolutely ruin it. And I think the abrupt, vague ending is totally the point of the movie too. The entire point is that life is what you make it. If they told us exactly what Joe went on to do with his life... It would be sort of like they were saying that he really did have this ultimate purpose, this sort of perfect... point that just fits perfectly and everything works. And that wasn't what they were saying at all. This way you can imagine him doing... anything. He might focus more on being a teacher. Or he might follow Dorothea and be part of that band. He might reconnect with his mom. He might adopt a cat. Who knows? We can imagine whatever, because that's exactly what life is - whatever you make it. "I thought 22's spark would be public speaking or something, but apparently that's just living in the moment?" Again, having her have a clear, defined THIS IS 22'S SPARK goes against the entire message of the movie. If her spark was public speaking, what would you be expecting of her? That she incarnates on Earth and has this super-strong urge to do public speaking, making her life revolve around it, the entire reason she came to Earth, her... purpose, maybe? She doesn't need a defined spark. It's better that she doesn't have one, in fact. As a culture, we've gotten so obsessed with "purpose" and "meaning" that we don't know how to stop looking at things like that, saying something is maybe a bad movie just because it left a lot nebulous. As for it being not friendly for kids... I mean, one, give kids a little credit. I think it would depend on the kid, but I would have freaking loved this movie as a kid, just like I do now. Yes, a lot of it probably would have gone over my head and I probably wouldn't love it in the same way I do now. But two, just because it's animated does not mean it's just a kid's movie and that's it. I don't honestly know how they would have pulled off the effects and vibe of this movie if they'd opted for something like live-action. But just because it's animated that way doesn't mean that the intended audience can't be adults!
@vrismylife75014 жыл бұрын
sadly the mentality of if it's animated it's for kids won't be going away for a while all we can do is call that flaw out i have said it again and again that i hate how people have that mentality and not only that it shits on kids that are more smarter then people think adults can enjoy cartoons same way with animated movies one good thing to take away from this is that most that are born somewhere between 2002 to 2020 will most likely not have it some might for sure but it's becoming more apparent that this mind set is just insulting to kids and adults that enjoy cartoons and animated movies its funny how anime is more accepted by adults when its just Japanese animation but oh well

It honestly makes me sad how many people aren't catching onto the message of Soul. Soul isn't a kid's movie. It follows some things from them sure, but even the comedy relief character, doesn't get that much screen time because that isn't the point. Soul is one of the first films that really directs itself towards Gen Z... And in some ways, still focuses on Millenials as well. Gen Z is a generation that struggles with the concept of living to work or working to live. We've heard our whole lives about what we need to do, and what is our purpose, but because of our big access to the entire world through the internet... there are so many more perspectives we see now than any other generation. We often get stuck trying to find what it is we're meant to do, as we're often big dreamers, but those "dreams" are not always what makes us tick... As is for anyone. In a similar feat, there's millennial representation as well. 22, represents the concept of being "behind"... in Japan, their millennials came into adulthood when the economy collapsed, and to this day most of them still haven't moved out of their parent's homes. And similar things have happened even in other countries, the U.S. most certainly included. 22 represents the millennial generation as the generation that's "behind" on living... 22 struggled with finding their "spark". (I honestly refuse to reference 22 with any pronouns other than they/them because they were coded at the beginning of the film to have NO gender because it hasn't been forced upon them yet. They haven't lived yet, therefore they have no gender.) 22 mentions how they felt there was something wrong with them, even though all of their concerns about life are completely valid. 22 is behind, and they certainly feel that fact... The main message of the film, at least from the perspective I am coming from and my personal struggles as an earlier gen z... this film made me cry and made me so comforted. We just... live. We don't need to have a purpose, we just live and work things out as we go... it's the biggest message that's super important to my generation because we have so much pressure on us to "fix" the economy that our parents refuse to believe is flawed (particularly here in the U.S.) We're expected to just go along with everything that the older generations just flowed with (or particularly our Gen X parents, who had some of the easiest time in the U.S. economy before it began to crash) The idea of working has never been an issue with gen z... more living to work. Because previous generations have, there's the expectation for us to just pick one thing and follow through with it... but what if we don't want that one thing? Or the thing we want isn't supported by our family, which is very, very often the case for many of us. Our parents are more concerned about whether we succeed, rather than if we're happy. This has caused a huge strain on our brains, and especially with our growth with the internet, and our living through god knows how many "apocalypse's" at this point. The film doesn't just "fade away" real quick. But this would have to come from your own experiences... if you personally haven't experienced these thoughts, then of course the film would fade off for you. I've watched this film nearly 10 times now, and it still hits me every time I watch it... The point is to live... We don't have to concern ourselves with everything else. And that message alone is so important, especially for a generation that's been too scared to because of what we've had in our growing up lives...

I personally think the ending is perfect. In real life, we don’t have that “adventure is over so happily ever after” because life continues. I love that I don’t know what he does in the end, I love that he can do whatever and we as the audience know that he’ll be happy no matter what. I’m really satisfied with the way that plays out and I think it’s something we can all relate to- nobody knows how our life will play out just like Joe (him saying “I don’t know” when asked what he’ll do with his second chance) but the lingering message of hope makes me feel great.

For what the incomplete ending was for many writed about it before me, so I will not do that, instead I want to give my personal thoughts: as a 16y old that everyday has an existencial crisis on my future etc. I was really pleased for the arguement beign treated as serious as possible, even if I would have licked it covered more in the barber shop scene, maybe with different characters talking about their experience and lifes, I found the message that the spark wasnt the objective of the person as something not many think about but of extreame importance, as we are continusly asked about what job we will do or what university we will take and it is really stressfull as we are always presented as there is only 1 path in life for us and if we cant keep walking in it bad things will happen. Another message that the film gives us is that "Joe was born to play the piano" but in the end we are told that the spark isnt the objective, and this made me think about the initial statement arriving at the conclusion that we dont live for one thing but we do that one thing to live, as the real objective is to live life appriciating every single day, I still am not able to do that but just realizing this was a big step for me :)

My main problem with this movie is how fast every conflict is solved, almost as soon as they are introduced, the little girl goes to Joe house to quit but after just a conversation, she decides to keep playing music, Joe mother being against Joe being a musician also gets solved after just a little argument with her, Joe gets another opportunity for the gig with Dorothea...again after just a little conversation with her. Is very difficult to find rewarding when our main protagonist overcome the conflicts that are present in his life when said conflicts doesn't really represent a struggle for our protagonist and are solved as easy as they are in this movie.
@stormblade28954 жыл бұрын
True, but a lot of these problems are solved by 22 in his body rather than just him. He questions how he views people and how to confront various scenarios (albeit briefly). Your opinion is still valid though, and I understand why you think it.

@IcidLink4 жыл бұрын
Yeah for a movie that will tell a story about life it’s quite unrealistic in the case of conflicts
@corrinw2414 жыл бұрын
I think you're looking at this through the wrong lense. From a literal standpoint you may be correct, but from a literary perspective, the inclusion of those conflicts can be viewed as poetic irony. The little conflicts that quickly resolve themselves throughout the film are mere physical parts of the overall emotional and mental conflict experienced by both 22 and Joe. It is obviously true that problems in life are not so quickly resolved, and that one might be happier they were. However, everything goes Joe's way, and in the end he is left unsatisfied, unsure, and unhappy (I.e. the emotional climax of the film). It's not a representation of the physical realities of life, but rather of the mental and emotional ones. It also speaks to the overall message of the film and the lesson in which both 22 and Joe learn which is to be satisfied with the day-to-day and the unknown. This film was incredibly well structured and so much more to assess.

I REALLY disagree with your opinion. The ending was supposed to be abrupt and that’s what made it amazing. If we were shown what he did with the rest of his life, the story wouldn’t hit the same. It would just be more of his life measured in accomplishments. With the way it ended, we’re left wondering how he spent the rest of his life. How he affected those around him. It’s not meant to have “a happy ending.” And with the “action” part, why does it need to have action scenes? My little sister and nephew seemed to pay attention just fine. They loved it and they’re 5. Action moments would just ruin the intellectual aspect of the movie. And as for the cliches, that’s such a petty critique. Yes cliches can be annoying but the movie uses these cliches to express their story better. The emotional dust scene was showing 22’s anxiety and depression. In all, your review was too simplified and kind of idiotic. Maybe put more thought into your reviews next time.

You missed the entire point of the movie. The reason we didn’t see Joe after he came back to earth because he doesn’t know what to do next, and that’s ok. SPOILERS: I loved 22’s arc and how it complements Joe’s, especially in the film’s final act where she becomes a lost soul. Throughout the movie, Joe believes that life amounts to nothing without a purpose. Though he does not directly communicate this perspective to 22, his overall vibe is apparent to her, and when she becomes a lost soul, you see that she is being tormented by this very mentality that once dominated Joe’s life (in the form of a shadow version of Joe talking down at her): you are not good enough, you amount to nothing, you have NO purpose. Once Joe has his “epiphany,” understanding the value in the simpler things of life and realizing that one’s worthiness for life is independent of finding a purpose... he returns to the soul world of the Great Before, because he knows his message and his overall approach with 22 was wrong. So Joe, by freeing himself from this damaging perspective on life, is able to free 22 as well in the film’s climax- and his actions further freed him in that he received a second chance back on earth. I love this movie and I love the ending especially because it’s cathartic for both character’s arcs.

I actually think the ending was a beautiful way to wrap the movie up. The movie doesn't end in some grand way with a celebration of his return or an epilogue showing us his success, it ends with a beginning. The ending is satisfying in the fact that there is no satisfying ending, because again life isnt about satisfying some greater purpose or ending but its about enjoying the experiences that life brings you. I get your points for sure & in a little way, I can agree but I gotta say, I did love this movie. I'm 29 years old so I can't speak for the kids, I have no idea how a younger audience would of taken it, I think there's stuff in there for them like when you're a kid, the adults in your life seem to pressure you into finding out what you want to be when you grow up & what your meaning in life is instead of just letting you live in the now. That could be a way kids can connect but I don't know, childhood was a bit too much in the past for me to determine that. Watching this, being 10 months away from turning 30, I can say that it has really connected with me. I'm someone who always likes to live in the now, I enjoy the little things in life & get excited over something as simple as petting my cat, eating ice cream, helping a kid at work with their homework, or just watching the snowfall on Christmas day. There's also the pressure that people give on where I should be going in life such as at work, something I didn't like about being there is the staff, I'm older than the majority of them but I choose to stay at the bottom because that's where I like to be. Some of the young adults working there were moving on to become teachers & other bigger things & they're all like, "what's your goal in life?" I never have an answer because I'm just happy being there, doing what I'm doing. There is this one elderly volunteer who told me that I should have a bigger goal in life & that it's sad that I was still there after 4 years in the same position, not gonna lie, I did cry when I got home that night because I felt like I should strive to do more because that's what everyone expects of me but I liked where I was. This movie was such a pleasant watch, it was like a reminder that the way I choose to live my life isn't wrong, it's how I want to live it. I do hope that those people who always work towards a big grand goal do listen to the message, probably won't make things easier on me but at least this movie made me happier with what I'm doing. As for your concerns on Terry, I almost feel like this movie didn't need a villain & they're just kinda tossed in to have some conflict but not be a villain, just to be a wrench in the works to make things more a little more difficult, I was content on their position, they didn't need to be anything bigger. This movie itself didn't need to be bigger, I'm happy with it being what it was, if it were too big & grand it might of muddied the message just a bit. It's nice for just a relaxing watch which I did need because Christmas was very stressful this year with family drama, I wanted to just lay back & zone out a bit which this movie perfectly achieved for me. Yes, it isn't for everyone so it's alright if it's not for you, enjoy what you enjoy, I do appreciate your thoughts on the movie. It's nice getting other perspectives. Thank you for delivering such a fun video to watch. Hope you have a grand New Year.

I understand that to be happy in life is to start living and enjoy what life give us without overthinking and complaining why it sucks, but as time goes on, this principle just went over my head due to the weight and expectations to have a successful future. Like my belief is still there but it hasn't been a priority ever since (like I almost forgot). Then, this movie came out, and it literally slaps "why life is truly worth living" really hard on me, it gives flashback of my own memories of memorable little moments that truly made me feel happy, and all of these emotions of happiness and relief surged back to me. This movie made me feel alive and excited to see what life is going to give me next. Just like Joe Gardner said, "I don't know how I'm going to spend my life, but I'm going to live every minute of it."
@Jili_Koeppe4 жыл бұрын
I usually don't like movies that much, but this one was different. I really liked the ending as it wasn't a 'happy ending' unlike most movies. When Joe played at the club, he didn't feel that 'spark', he didn't feel complete even when his dreams came true. In life, you might not get to your 'end goal', but you also don't want to waste life chasing that one thing. Just appreciate the little things, because if you were to die today, you want to die happy. You can wonder what most likely happened after, but if there was a sequel, I don't think it would make the ending of this better. One thing that I would like to see in the ending, is 22 being born or a later version of her. This movie may not need that since you can assume 22 is happy and finding her spark or what makes her happy, but still a GREAT movie.
