The beauty of PIXAR is how artfully they tap into your emotions, without you even realizing how they do it. You probably didn’t notice the theme of pink throughout the sequence, but it represents Ellie and her presence. That’s why why Carl is sitting on the stoop, there’s just a hint of pink still attached to the house, and as he walks inside, without her for the first time, the pink glow slowly fades away.

This movie touches so close to home for me; as a child I watched cancer slowly take my grandmother from me. First it was her hair, and it ended with her voice. Her last few months on this earth she became mainly non-verbal because of the tumor(s) that were on her brain. Watching this scene or even thinking about it always brings me to tears, and though I don’t watch it because of that very reason, whenever I need to have a good cry I just watch this scene again. I hope you all are able to process your grief in a safe and healthy way.

UP is a special movie because it is one of rare movies that packs a punch at the very beginning. I often say the first 15 minutes of the movie was absolutely outstanding and that opening sequence alone would win any awards. It was tender, poignant and yet uplifting (no pun intended). It feels like a 100-year lifetime just pass you by within 15 minutes. I also think most of young kids wouldn't appreciate (or understand) the scene but when you are older, rewatching the scene will simply hit you differently.

can't believe how much of that was all written by the writers. I seriously thought a good chunk of it was just collaborated on during the animation process. Talk about knowing how to write your material. Btw, it should be noted that the music plays a significant role in setting the atmosphere and mood of this clip. Without (you can turn off your volume) it drastically changes the tone.

let's not forget that the music literally played about 60% of the role of everything you felt in this piece.. dont believe me? Reply that scene and play britney spears or a random metal song, you will experience a VERY VERY different story - Yes, it will still hit all the beats and you will get the point, but it is absolotely no where near the same feelings you will get when experiencing this with that Waltz Up score
