why did every reviewer said that camera is the best ever but linus?
@LinusTechTips7 жыл бұрын
+R M they are probably shooting manually or in a flat profile and editing in post - these are things I can't be bothered to do (and neither are the vast majority of people). I am more interested in reviewing phones the way I'm going to use them and the way they're likely to be used by others. The V30 gets absolutely crushed by the Note 8, iPhone 8+ and Pixel 2 XL in Brandon's upcoming camera round up. Like, not even close. It's bad. - LS

I'm beginning to think Linus has something against LG, I love my G5 and this review missed a lot of important things, while Bixby got a video and he RAVED about being able to squeeze a phone. LG makes good phones, and they're even better when you can get them for cheap (my G5 was $240USD and one can be acquired for cheaper). But yeah, if you want a good review, go to MKBHD or something, Linus isn't a phone kinda dude.

What's with this review? It feels like "Hey, I didn't have any other content to fill for today, so I used this phone for half an hour and came up with this quick 'review'." LG's V series is tailored toward power users, who will really take advantage of all the phone's features, not the regular instagram junkie who listens to Lil Pump. I agree that this phone is for a very niche market, and LG sucks at advertising their crap, but the LG V20 and V30 are monsters when it comes to phones. The amount of flexibility the camera provides is mindblowing, it's not a fair comparison to just take a quick shot of something, when this camera was designed to be used in manual mode. Also, no mention of the wide angle lens? Focus peaking? The battery is small? No other reviewer I've seen covering the V30 has complained, and when I used it wasn't even a problem. Even while blasting music with the DAC enabled, or watching youtube for hours. Did you even use this phone Linus? I've been a viewer since like 2009, and never have I felt a product was given such a shit treatment. I know you like your Google Pixel, or whatever you're using right now, but a proper review for the device is why your viewers clicked on the video.

Just because you don't prefer LG's automatic image processing over Apple's or Samsung's, doesn't in any way mean that the camera - which has full manual modes for photos and video, as well as a cinelog option for video, and is under a fully glass lens, none of which you even began to mention - is 'inferior' (that's some real good reviewing there Linus). Also, dissing the V30 for its battery capacity is ridiculous - the only reason the Pixel 2 XL has a 6% bigger battery is because it is significantly bigger than the V30 in every direction, despite omitting a 3.5mm jack and a specialised DAC. Sorry but this review is just atrocious.

Like many others are saying, a very half-baked review. You forgot to mention how all the hardware buttons are right where you'd want them. No more smudging your camera trying to unlock your phone (Samsung) or accidentally locking your screen when you try to adjust the volume (Google). You didn't like LG's skin even though it has all the features you raved about on your S8 review (aside from the curved edge, which you didn't give much praise) and then some? For me the extra sound control, display resolution and frame rate adjustments, and battery saver options are pretty irreplaceable, but there's plenty more. But just glossing over the camera by showing a few low light conditions on auto mode? That's ridiculous, especially considering how much more this phone has to offer over the competition in photos AND videos.

I just bought myself a new V30 to replace my aging G6. I briefly got to try out a Galaxy S20 FE and I just couldn't get along with it. The things that make the V30 still a great phone in 2020 in my opinion: No notch or pin hole camera cut out and just enough bezel at the top and bottom of the phone so you can comfortably hold it sideways without accidentally touching the screen. Reasonable screen size that you can actually use one handed and fit in a front jeans pocket. Very sharp 537 PPI screen. (The S20 FE screen is only 405 PPI and just looks blurry and cheap in comparison.) And finally - A 3.5mm headphone jack with a built in DAC! I can't think of any phone released in 2020 that has all those features. It feels like phone designers have forgotten how people actually use their phones.
@OfSheikah4 жыл бұрын
Nice insight to read here! So you got a chance to briefly try out a S20 FE? One thing I'm sure about the S20 FE user experience (I haven't gone to a phone store for a long time probably ever since that publicly displayed S8 hands on and that S10 I tried on another store recently, so since the S10 era) is I am sure the camera capabilities like in software wise stock to stock, the S20 FE lacks those proffesional videography interface options. I just watched a V30 review of someone on it's cinematography capabilities, so yeah I just learned it's 10 bit HDR capability and solid main back camera for videography. Eh I think I am too much getting in the cinematography aspect of this phone... General features wise, yes I am so agreeing with what you stated above, the display design looks so good and the back of it as well overall gives a simple elegant look, holdability is still appreciably normal and the screen's capability is freaking good too, 10 bit capable display with this boi, the DAC (I haven't had a phone that has this specific feature so if I ever decide to upgrade then I'd be appreciating this, currently on a G5 SE). Overall yeah it doesn't feel like a phone that's too left behind as time advances Other phones I'd consider to upgrade mainly are Samsung's S8 or S9, because heck yeah man I really like the design of these phones where the top and bottom bezels are beautifully left in similar size, and this V30 is no exception

You should probably mention it's video and incredible manual camera modes as pluspoints and bad front-facing-camera as a minus. But yeah I bought mine for the audio and it's stellar. Also the downward firing speaker is actually pretty good and very loud despite it's position. Mine's loud enough to be put in a bowl while I shower and comfortably enjoy the music over the sound of the shower. Which is not something I've ever had from a phone before. Also a cool thing is their always on display moves ever so gradually over time to prevent burn-in. Which is a pretty good-guy move.

The fuck, I usually love LTT videos, especially phone reviews but he didn't mention soooo many things.The V30 is seriously one of the best flagships out there. We saw 2 photo comparisons... This phone has the best camera on the market... You didn't even mention wide angle, or Manual mode or even the amazing video capabilities. As for battery, sure bigger is better, but not if the software is poorly optimized and drains the battery. People have been getting awesome amounts of battery with the V30. We should also be praising LG for not only keeping the headphone jack but one upping every other phone with a headphone jack. A 24bit DAC that supports 50-600Ohms headphones... its nuts. You can literally power Sennheiser HD 800 S's with just the phone. And my god, what phone now a days doesn't offer expandable memory... Oh right the Pixel line... The V30 also has facial recognition. This phone is also extremely light. It weighs 158 Grams. The Pixel 2 XL is 175 Grams, the Ipone X is 174 Grams, the Iphone 8 plus is 202 Grams, the LG G6 is 162 Grams, The S8+ is 173 Grams and the Note 8 is 195 Grams. Im not some LG fan boy but the review seemed half assed. Like You had used the phone for literally an hour while you made this video. Idk, I guess LG doesn't pay as well as Apple, Samsung or Google.

I know I'm a few generations behind, but I just switched from a g6 which had massive hardware failures, to a v30 and I absolutely love it. Maybe not current, but it's amazing. My g6 had an intermediately working fingerprint sensor, the headphone jack quit working, the earpiece speaker quit working, the volume up button quit working, and the sim/SD card tray broke inside of the phone making it very difficult to remove the cards!!!! GRRR. It did not age well with only 32 gigs of storage and the processor to today's standards was starting to feel pretty slow. The oled screen also struggled really bad with burn in as even just texting would leave the whole keyboard on the screen after only a minute or so. My v30 has not had any of these problems and it's used and 2 years old. I'm so happy with it, it's been a great phone so far. The v30 is fast, sooooo much faster than my g6. The screen in my opinion is one of the best looking ones I've seen, though darker things can be almost too dark at times, if the brightness is turned down. Which has actually turned out to be a complaint of mine, because the screen doesn't actually get dim enough for my preferences, when it comes to darker environments. I liked how I could put my g6 into battery saver mode, and it would give me just that little bit more of a dimmer screen, but with my v30 it doesn't have that, and it feels too bright when it's a dark room. The headphone amplifier really sounds amazing, and I can't make this up. Everything sounds so much more detailed, it's really a jaw dropping effect if you have a good set of headphones. I normally use bluetooth due to convenience, but as someone who loves music, every time I have the ability to be plugged in from now on I will be, because it's just that much better. The phone feels great in the hand. After 2 years the battery is still lasting all day long no problem. I haven't really taken many photos with the camera yet, but the front facing camera is millions better than my g6 was lol. I generally tend to be an advanced user when it comes to photography, and I'm certain that I will be able to get amazing shots with this phone, as my g6 was extremely capable in that aspect and this is supposedly an upgrade. Overall, I have to say, while I'm bummed that I'm stuck with android 9, this is still a very good phone in 2020. :)

Linus, thank you for reaffirming my opinion on the over-blown Pixel 2 XL screen problems. You are the first person I've come across who has the same opinion. It frustrates me to no end how so many reviewers & tech news sites have made this small OLED problem into the main "distraction" of this phone. Personally, I've looked at the screen, and I kinda noticed it, but it was only at an angle that I'd never use the phone at. All that to say, again, thank you for being someone who shares the same opinion. (I know this is an LG review, but whatever. I just felt like I needed to get my thoughts out.)

Maan Mazen well, watch jon retingers or mkbhd's or android authority's video on this phone. This phone has pretty good camera. I love my LG v30. Its great when it comes to headphones and its extremely powerful. Linus didnt even cover its more important features like the wide angle lens, the 600mhz (5G) support and the HDR10 capable screen. I expecteded better from you linus...
@onee7 жыл бұрын
Linus press the volume button down twice to open the camera quickly when your screen is turned off. And LG is the only one where you can double tap your screen to open your screen (which I'm really missing on other devices). And LG has a wide angle lens, not a useless 2x optical zoom lens. LG is also better in taking videos. And like you mentioned the audio is great. Did you look at how you can manually adjust your camera. A feature missing on a lot of other flagship phones IMO.
@vicorp7 жыл бұрын
Kinda with a lot of people as you didn't mention anything about the camera/video abilities of the V30. While I won't toss my V20 onto CL to get one (due to the non-removable battery in the new phone....ZeroLemon FTW!), I would like to see more exploring of that. Nice you mentioned the Quad DAC built into it (another feature I love on my V20). And I am sure a lot of people could care less about Bixby or more buttons, so this phone should work great for them. I will say the whole "turn your brightness down" suggestions is spot on and rarely if ever do you need it at 100%. My mom for some reason keeps hers about 80% on her S5 and it's definitely got a bad case of that. Overall, a decent review but not as in depth as I would have like. But hey, you only have 7-9 minutes to get in as much info as possible.

V30 volume keys on the side if double tapped up opens memo, if double tapped down opens the camera from a closed phone. Also the UI has themes that can be applied include a desktop/drawer mode, which also weren't discussed. It has a pull out menu which you can program, dual app support, tons upon tons of un named features that do make it useful. I understand it would take a while to talk about all the features but really the v30 has been taking way more flack than needed from the linus group. I think the phone and its features have been overall under researched or demonstrated by a vast majority of the public including the mobile phone retailers.

woahhh Droid turbo! The exact phone I had before switching to a V30! Anyways, I personally love the V30 for now... Even bought it on launch. Don't really ever have to worry about battery cuz it usually lasts all day unless I'm in a spot with really bad reception for a few hours and I'm trying to use my phone. I can start using my phone at 10 am and not really have to worry about charging it until 11 pm (around 30%) on a regular day for me. I did like the surprise of the dac built in. Overall I'm satisfied, especially knowing I have 2 years of protection, and a daydream view (cool bonus I guess). Definitely recommend a DBrand skin. Back can scratch decently easy.

I'm really getting stuck on what my new phone should be. My Nexus 6P is starting to wear down, and I need something new, something similar. I want a clean Android experience, so basically I need a Pixel. However, the Pixel 2 simply looks like crap, and the 2 XL has a bit too many issues for its price (cheapest I can get it is €1039 / $1232, which is fricking ridiculous). Looks like another year for the 6P, waiting for the Pixel 3..

Linus, just to let you know about this LG or any other device: *EU-wide, there is a statutory 2-year warranty which applies to consumer buyers* (not to business customers). This is European Union legislative and it guarantees every consumer a 2-year warranty by the seller of the device, which means that you can return the faulty product to where you bought it from within 2 years, regardless of how long manufacturer warranty is. This is usually backed by major manufacturers that distribute their products in the EU so most phones and other devices here come with a minimum 2-year manufacturer warranty, and those that don't (Apple!!!) are effectively still covered. There was even a lawsuit against Apple because they were selling a regular 2-year warranty to consumers despite it being the same thing as the statutory warranty.

LG G5 is the worst phone I have ever owned. Power button broken, camera glass delaminating, GPS does not work, and screen burn in all within the first 6 months.
@Cyndakaiser7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you just got very unlucky. Mine has been going for a year now with none of those issues (or any others). The only thing is it's battery doesn't last quite as long anymore, but at least I could replace it if I wanted. I also got it for a wicked price, on sale for just $120. I could probably use it for another year if I wanted to. I just upgraded to the V30 though and I'm very happy with it. Also a killer price, buy one get one free through T-Mobile, and a $400 rebate through LG (and an extended 2 year warranty). So just $400 for two top of the line phones, the HiFi DAC and the manual photo mode are huge perks for me. Now, my G3 eventually had it's display go out, and my G4 bootlooped after 1 year, just out of warranty, so that's not to say LG hasn't had their quality control issues. But I do think they've gotten better by leaps and bounds, and they're willing to back that up with the 2 year warranty.

The Manic The LG G5 has and LCD display. Burn in only occurs on OLED displays. I think you are actually seeing image retention, ive seen it on the G5.
@themanic65757 жыл бұрын
Brandon Burslie Technical terms aside the result is sadly still the same. The Note 4 that I have owned since 2014(AMOLED screen) has burn in so minimal that it was not even noticeable unless you went out of your way to try to find it. The image retention on my LG G5 is so bad that I no longer watch videos on it. And since I posted this comment a month ago the phone no longer connects to 5ghz wifi signals. I have owned this device less than a year and the screen, GPS, camera, power button, HD calling, and internet are useless. Along with static when headphones are plugged in. I have had to factory reset my device about once a month just to keep it working. Just finished this comment and can still see the keyboard clear as day when I leave the youtube application. I have had way too many issues that are similar to other users. I do not believe that I have received a bad device. This was how the phone was designed. I will never buy a phone or tv from LG.
@BrandoMan7 жыл бұрын
The Manic Thats too bad, LG experimented with the G5 and V20. Once they saw those devices "fail", they made the G6 and V30 in uniform with other flagships. They arent perfect but are damn good devices. I dont blame you for your anti LG opinion, because the G5 was a piece of garbage. But that doesnt represent LG as a whole, The V30 I have is absolutely amazing. I think in a few years when they fix their screens and hopefully fix their software, you might want to try them again.

How about the HTC U11? I really recommend trying that one out, maybe reviewing it. The screen is IPS, therefore no blueshift or burnin problems. I think the camera quality has more detail in raw than the Pixel 2, and the audio quality is top notch. Yet the HTC U11 is *never* mentioned by any of the big guys in media. Why is this? It has a stunning aesthetic, top notch hardware (flagships are nearly all the same in that regard), and I think it really tops all the phones mentioned.

My LG G4 can quick launch and snap a picture with a double click of volume down, I'd be surprised they had taken that out. I have to agree with the waves of people criticising this review on the supposed lack of something extra. The manual control that you can do for you photo and video is the extra thing that makes this phone. AND the side angle lens that has been refined from previous LG phones. I shoot mostly in manual and in JPEG with my G4 but when I need to it's just a tap to shoot a DNG as well.
