not all mice should run the highest DPI setting. some mice sensors actually have noisy output when running high DPI settings. They've actually been interpolated to achieve the higher DPI and it's not the same level of accuracy as the lower DPI settings. This means you don't always get the same result when moving the mouse which is a big no for CS. *edit:* here's where I learned this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIjEg3qobZyWbsU The same problem exists with the polling rate. 250hz is a bit low, and 1000hz actually misses registration sometimes, making 500hz the best choice for some mice. Zowie FK2 in particular shows this problem. since pixel skipping isn't an issue at low sensitivities used in cs, you should google the best DPI for your mouse's sensor model (people actually put a lot of time into researching this) and prioritise that to make sure all of your mouse movements are consistent.

This is not entirely true. A lot of the noise people perceive is because you're seeing more of the raw signal. If you use a lower DPI you are simply down sampling and rounding what would be all the data points into a single value which makes it look smoother. It's not actually smoother, but to your perception it is. If you ensure the overall sensitivity is the same like in the video the higher DPI would actually be more accurate (even if it's ever so slightly so) because less of this rounding would of taken place. It's exactly the same with polling rate. It might look more random but that is simply because you are looking at more of the raw data, if you could forever zoom into the data, it would look even more messy and random but it would be more accurate to what the sensor is seeing.

It's also important to mention that you don't want to use a DPI that's too high either. A lot of mouse sensors (even high end ones) will introduce extra smoothing above a certain DPI step, which adds additional input delay. The exact DPI where this smoothing kicks in will vary, some sensors go as high as 3500 DPI (e.g. TrueMove3 in the Sensei 310/Rival 310), or some do it as low as 1800 DPI (e.g. 3389 in the DeathAdder), or the 3360 found in a lot of mice will add smoothing at 2100 DPI. So if you're not sure about your sensor, using 1600 DPI or less as a rule of thumb will prevent this from happening on most mice. Luckily, 1600 (with the game adjusted to compensate) should already be smooth enough at any resolution, if you're really that worried about pixel skipping. Also, a small amount of skipping is fine, it's only annoying when it's very extreme like you showed in UT. Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that some players prefer low DPI such as 400, because high DPI can feel "too smooth" in a way (with the game adjusted accordingly). A low in-game setting and really high DPI will pick up on the absolute smallest of movements, most of which might not even be intentional. If you have the slightest shake in your hand, the mouse will already translate that into the game. A low DPI and higher in-game setting will mean there's a higher threshold above which your mouse will pick up your movements, which can be useful to ignore unintentional micro-movements, and only have it register intentional ones, making your aim feel a bit more stable and consistent. This difference is extremely small though, and probably won't affect the majority of players, but I felt like mentioning it anyway.
@DeSinc6 жыл бұрын
yep. most mice that go over 1600 dpi are actually halving each pixel on the mouse's sensor to achieve the effect through interpolation which is not as accurate as using a DPI setting native to the sensor's resolution. usually 800 or 1600 is best. that being said, pros use 400 because the mouse skipping angle literally doesn't matter whatsoever at that scale. the angles are just too small to ever have any effect on real gameplay. a head will always be like 15+ times bigger than the max skip you could have at a sensible sensitivity

i just checked my Pixart 3360 sensor in DM1 Pro S mouse. when i play on 3200+ dpi my flicks are getting "cancelled", meaning there is very low maximum speed of the mouse which sucks. i tried to play on 1600 dpi and it's playable now but i still believe the fastest flicks would still be influenced. 800 dpi is the best for me.

Hi. I'm interested in how much dpi can people control. Can i use nonnative dpi like 450, 500, 550 and how it affect on stability, have it more errors than on 3200 dpi or not. What is cpi actually. If i have 900 dpi it means in square or in a straight line. i know about pixel skipping on low dpi, but i dont use more than 800 dpi anymore because it is ineffective. With 800 dpi on low-veryhigh (like 450degree/40cm) sens, there not so noticeable pixelskipping. At the same time, fewer points are easy to control. On highest dpi like 6000 i cant turn around as fast as on 400 dpi. Low dpi compared to highest dpi feels much faster, but not in all situations it depends on your ingame sensitivity. For some reason all pro players in modern games like tfue, cloakzy, kingrichard, mongraal, taimou, dafran, calvin, shroud and almost all famous cs pro playing on 400 dpi is it because of more speed and control?
@brnddi5 жыл бұрын
This is the only thing that matters here. The game engine doesn't deal in pixels, it deals in angles. Pixels only become relevant at the very tail end of the rendering pipeline, and they have nothing to do with the game logic. What's shown on your screen is just an approximation of the internal state of the engine. In layman's terms, it's possible to turn the camera by "half a pixel", though that's a mistatement because, again, the camera angle has nothing to do with pixels. In other words, don't worry about "pixel jumps/skipping", worry about degree skipping. If you have a sensitivity of 10 with the default m_yaw, for instance, each step of your mouse will skip 0.22 degrees. As is evident from the video here, where some skipping is already visible at a sensitivity value of 8, this is already perceptible, though enemy hitboxes will likely still occupy a space greater than 0.22° at all but the most extreme ranges, which means that *technically* it won't put you at a disadvantage in most practical scenarios. Your DPI is completely irrelevant to the amount of degrees you will skip, too: it only affects your effective sensitivity. A low DPI won't make you skip more and a high DPI won't make you skip less; the only thing that matters is the in-game sensitivity value. Of course this is not to say that DPI is meaningless, as it allows you to tweak your effective sensitivity (ie. maintain low in-game sens without having an absurdly low overall sensitivity). So in practice the lesson remains the same - high DPI with low sensitivity is better - but the *reason* it's better is different. PS: lowering your m_pitch and m_yaw will increase the precision of your mouse movement, but: 1) 0.022 degrees is already a very tiny angle, and 2) the game's frame rate will impose a degree of diminishing returns on this, because multiple mouse movements during a single frame just get merged into one big mouse movement.
@abcdef-zs9in4 жыл бұрын

Polling rate is also important. Turning this up will increase the "refresh rate" of your mouse, but will sometimes mess with sensitivity. Also, higher polling rate will make your aim more "jittery" due to it picking up more actions. Also when you flick your mouse around really fast you'll look like you have spinbots ;)

He has no idea what he's talking about in this video though, and it aged like milk. The in game sensitivity modifier has nothing to do with pixel skipping. This is entirely determined by DPI, and nothing else, period. You're free to replicate his experiments on your own, and you will notice the lower your DPI, the more the scope when zoomed in feels like it is moving in chunks. This is because more DPI = more information and less DPI = less information for your mouse to pick up on. Theoretically if you played on 50 DPI for example, it would feel so noticeably chunky that any in game sensitivity modifier would not even be relevant. Having a british accent and 1m subs on youtube doesn't make someone a genius, or immune to criticism. People just believe him here because of appeal to authority fallacy and fanboyism.

It is true that, High DPI x Low Sens, gives you a better precision, by skipping fewer pixels, leaves a smoother aiming sensation, but if your observation level is as sharp as I, you will notice a small input lag between action and reaction if you use 1800-2000DPI, for example, compared to 400-800 (and this is not a placebo, my tracking improves absurdly after dozens of tests, having decreased my DPI from the maximum values quoted, to 400-800, I feel the reaction of my mouse movements on the screen, VERY MORE responsive), the response time is practically instantaneous, (and this makes more sense when researching more about the subject of "not exceeding 1600 DPI as smoothing/jitter is added and faults in the communication between the mouse and the sensor = Input lag) both for players of flicks, or tracking (like me) will prioritize a shorter response time, than sacrificing this to not have" pixel skipping ", not least because it’s not that relevant (the vast majority of pro players use 400-800, mainly from quake series, is already a great proof of that, and another fact that they do not use highly absurd DPI, includes the human error margin of micro-movements, but that is not the focus here). I always found myself in periods when my aim got worse sometimes, and sometimes better, and I barely noticed that the increase in DPI to not have pixel skipping, had something to do with it, in other words, the cause of my problem , but I finally found that out, and I'm happy anyway (OBS: but of course, everything is a matter of preference, there are people who prefer high DPI vs. low sens, because they prefer a smoother aim, and be used to it in the long run, vice versa, but I VERY DOUBT, that 80% of them noticed at some point, this difference, small, but perceptible if observed with attention, or at some point they noticed, but he found this possibility discardable.) I hope I helped those who read this :))

For an easy explanation of the alisasing effect think like this: Mouse moves 1 unit - translates to 1 unit in the RAW output. Windows amplifies by 1 and theen CSGO amplifies by 1.6. Movement is now equal to 2.0 after rounding and there you have it. You have "destroyed the resolution" of your mouse by using amplification since the lowest unit you will be able to move is 2 units.

trivia: Some StarCraft Broodwar players, after StarCraft Remastered was released opted to keep playing at 4:3 instead of 16:9. Why? Isn't the bigger field of view (without the black bars at the side) a clear advantage? In RTSes you move camera by sticking mouse cursors to the side of the screen (in some of them pros move cameras using different methods too), and players (pros, including world champions) used to 4:3 screen sizes actually keep playing at 4:3! It is super funky to see two player-sight markers on the minimap as observer - one narrower (4:3) and one wider (16:9) :-)

I've noticed that a higher DPI setting makes your hand "lazier", as I call it, which basically means that it is used to make smaller movements to have the same result as the lower DPI setting. This results in a different feeling of the game when aiming with the exact same mouse sensitivity (DPIxsensitivity amplifier). Conclusion? Don't change your DPI (unless it is unreasonably high), it may affect your aim and your play style in a negative way.
@floatline6 жыл бұрын
What I mean by this is that your "aim training" (the muscle memory part of it, to be specific) is not happening only in game. Consider the DPI to be the more important part of DPI x Sensitivity amplifier = True sens.

Hello. This is Aliasing in effect. Basically what you want is windows amplification and ingame amplification = 1, and then control the sensitivity with your mouse DPI. This has multiple advantages whereas your video points out the main one. Pixel skipping/Aliasing from amplification and rounding. The second advantage is that you can more easy achieve the same sensitivity in 2 different shooter games in this manner. At last - as im an old rat, i've been through countless iterations of the game, and the ingame sensitivy slider has changed multiple times over time. By using sensitivity = 1 you can completely ignore all these UserInterface approaches to setting sensitivity with a slider or some graphic manipulation, and just be confident with your settings.

I set my DPI to 2.5K and my sens to 1 because of this video. DPI is dots per inch, or how many pixels you crosshair moves per inch. The sens just amplifies this value, so if I have it at 1 then I should move 1 pixel each time, never skipping or moving less than can be shown on screen. This also makes it easier for me to move between games and have the same sens.

as soon as i saw the ut's sniper crosshair i knew EXACTLY what you were talking about. it was a massive problem back then. the jumps in the low dpi mice were so huge sometimes you couldn't physically aim at the other guy without walking because the aim would snap right past him in either side. i had to use a sensitivity of 14. now i use 2.5 for the same speed. good times. by the way, check out the actual max DPI for the sensor used in your mouse. the higher settings are all interpolated and thus WORSE than the highest non-interpolated DPI you can reach. it's usually ballpark 1600~3200 dpi, even if your mouse goes to 16000 dpi
@villemattias6 жыл бұрын
I do not know why pros don't use higher dpi, and I have been wondering about this for a while. Why use 400 DPI if you can use 1000+ but just lower the sensitivity to get the same effective DPI in game? Is it because they don't know about the "problem" or is there another reason? It's not like you couldn't do with a bit more accuracy in your mouse movement. I used to play with 600 DPI and 2.0 in game sensitivity (1200 eDPI), but I changed to 1200 DPI and 1.0 in game sensitivity (still 1200 eDPI) because it just feels smoother and fluid to aim.

@villemattias6 жыл бұрын
@@GreatMCGamer Yeah but let's say they have 400 DPI and in game sens 1.5, that would put their eDPI at 600. Instead of that they could use 800 DPI and 0.75 in game sens and still have the same effective sensitivity at 600, just the movements being more accurate and smooth. That's what my comment was about wondering why they use lower DPI higher sens instead of vice versa, not about how low their effective DPI is.
@GreatMCGamer6 жыл бұрын
Sensors have a limit of how fast DPI they can have optimally Going above that DPI just multiplies the existing DPI 12000 DPI is not any more accurate than 800.

before even watching the video i'd like to present an analogy: high dpi with low sensitivity, is like making a larger image (larger resouloution) smaller: high detail While making low dpi with high sensitivity is like strechting a small image (lower resouloution), lower detail, although they both have the same ''physical'' size, the mouse movent form edge to edge.

The problem with using a super high dpi like say 16000 in games is that most games only let you adjust mouse sensitivity (amplification) in gameplay and not in menus, which makes it a pain navigating menus with your mouse.
@JessicaFEREM3 ай бұрын
You can work around using a higher DPI when you're in windows by turning down the windows "In game Movement amplifier" and then turn the DPI up as high as it'll let you, optionally you can install RawAccel and ONLY use the Device menu to set the DPI across all your mice to feel the exact same minus sensor deviations. also also, if you have a Mac, Linearmouse will let you set very specific mouse sensitivity for each mouse.

Philip, great video but I do need to interject! Basically the problem is that the hardware is less and less able to accurately distinguish how much movement occurs at high DPIs so there is a risk of getting extra 'noise' which may go the other way. * Just a warning! *

Beside those pixel jumps, I use high sensitivity + low ingame sensitivity for another reason. I like high sens for desktop use but a lower sens for games like CSGO. High sens + low ingame sens allows me to have a low sens crosshair movement while maintaining the faster mouse movement in menus (main menu, buy menu, etc.) and on the desktop of course.
