One potential market for the Chromebook not mentioned is the elderly market. Having gone through years of giving my father endless support through all iterations of Windows I bought him a Chromebook about 18 months ago. After an initial panic period he doesn't call for support anymore, not for months. The simpler interface and all chrome functionality is a boon for people not so technically minded. Of course his was WAY less expensive than this option.

One of the few reviewers that actually used the laptop for a couple weeks as their daily driver and it shows. You hit the nail on the head here. The education market who wants a premium laptop running Chrome OS. I for one love my Pixelbook and have used my custom built Windows PC less and less since getting the PB. I make excuses to go to the coffee shop more to work for the day even over having a nice mouse + mechanical keyboard at my home office. You either "get" the Pixelbook or you don't. Just as you mentioned Michael. If you just view Chrome OS as a glorified chrome browser, you weren't going to buy this thing anyway. If you realize that you use Chrome for most of your day-to-day work and have Android Apps to fall back on to fill the voids, this is the best laptop that will do just that. The hardware is incredible on this thing as well. Next to the Samsung Chromebook Pro for example, you can feel the extra $500 in the hardware and build quality. Performance is great too, the only time I have really felt some issues are when having two personas configured and regularly jumping between the two (which sadly is a very normal workflow for me). Have you experienced this Michael? I saw that you only had 1 account logged into the Pixelbook though. Keep up the awesome work and I'm glad this review exists to actually do this device justice. This review and The Verge are the two that hit the nail on the head with the Pixelbook.

Man, this was fantastic! So level-headed! I tend to love on the Pixelbook as a die-hard Chromebook fan, but I love seeing a sensible review from a tech reviewer who dabbles in a little of everything. @SH3player7 жыл бұрын
Pety Yep not meant for creative professionals or tech enthusiasts either. Actually, as a marketing standpoint it is smarter to market to the masses who are casual users. It is like Planet Fitness, marketing towards the masses of people who don't work out often. Hitting a large portion of people who don't work out and work out moderately instead of bodybuilders(which are the minority) People who usually invest heavy amount of time into certain areas like that Usually make less money than the business man who will fork over a $1k+ on a tech item they use Mostly for emails,Excel, and other casual stuff. That is why they focus more on advertising and user experience to appeal to that large group. That is why their tech is underpowered compared to competition.
@ThatsPety7 жыл бұрын

actually... it is
@professionallylay7037 жыл бұрын
Patrick Your observations are not wrong, with respect to our consumer society, but you've missed it, when it comes to what Chromebooks have been doing for years. If you want a casual experience, great, and you get even a little more than that, and at a price that is still competitive with Apple's overpriced junk. But, android is still integrating, day by day, into the larger Chrome Os environment, and content creation options are emerging and being refined constantly. Then, of course, there's running linux. Which is an install process that an infant could do, and in about 15 minutes. Ubuntu Studio, with all it's content creation tools, Kdelivr, openshot, mypaint, and some other seriously professional grade art and other graphic design tools. I'd even bet that the stylus wacom pen is probably better optimized, out of the box, when running Ubuntu, for example, as opposed to Chrome Os/Android. Which is both weird and wonderful.

...Since I do a lot of computer-generated illustration and photoediting, I still use many apps that run on a Windows platform, so a Chromebook would be useless... Probably the biggest reason I will be holding on to my 2016 handset until it finally dies!

Great review, thanks! I dig your reviews! Since the Pixelbook tethers to the Pixel phone, it should really allow apps like Google Message, which is the Google texting app on the Pixel and Duo, which is video calls. It's stupid to me that these Google apps don't run on Pixelbook. I'd like to see more integration with the Pixel 2 and Pixelbook like texting and calls/video calls. Speaking of that, how is the forward facing cam on the pixelbook???

I think Chrome OS has come along far enough to warrant purchase of a midrange laptop like the Asus 302C and Samsung Chromebook Plus and Pro. At $450-500-ish, they're somewhat pricey for a Chromebook, but the high quality build and horsepower under the hood make it worth it over the more plasticy $250-$300 range stuff (which, btw, is getting pretty damn good too!). But the jump to $1,000 and up for something running Chrome OS just doesn't make much sense at this time unless you're a developer speeding hours and hours on these things professionally and you want something nice to work on. But for the rest of us... this thing just isn't ready for primetime.

I'm more interested in the future of Windows 10 on ARM. The SOCs take so little space leaving a lot more room for battery and since they tend to stay cool passively, no active cooling is really needed (although it's hard to say at the moment since we have no info about how well they actually run W10).

I'm a student. But apart from the build quality, there is nothing that would pull me towards chrome OS. I can do everything and more on a windows and to some extent on a MacBook as well. While running apps on a large screen may be appealing for those who love games, there are very few practical uses for anything else. I use an Android phone and would definitely prefer to use that to run any applications. The PixelBook is ideal for Multimedia and browsing. That's about it.
