Hi, Robbie. Love your podcast on KZbin. Howdy and how do you do?! Love this review (review) of the original Pixelbook. WE STILL HAVE ONE! It still works almost perfectly; there are sometimes when we need to close the lid to get the scrolling back, but that is the only thing that challenges us these days. Screen is still sharp. Keyboard and trackpad work seamlessly. Battery power is ample, and refresh rate is right on the spot. Thanks to Google for extending the update window to 2027, so we will be able to hang onto this amazing machine for the foreseeable future.

Update to my earlier comment: I have been using my Pixelbook for about 18 months now and I sill consider it the best tech purchase I've ever made (and I've owned them all). Using the Internet has never been this much fun. Yes, I said "fun". I know being happy is very much out of vogue right now, but I don't care, having fun in life is still my #1 priority. However, using the Internet is not the only thing you can do with this device. All of the Google apps like Docs & Sheets are a breeze to use on the Pixelbook, and the security of ChromeOS, don't get me started! We know how ChromeOS blows all other operating systems out of the water when it comes to security. And the keyboard! Holy crap, the keyboard is heaven-sent! I have been a touch typist for over 40 years and worked as an executive secretary as well as a software engineer (so hardly a day went by for 35+ years that I didn't use a keyboard most of the day) and I can tell you this is the BEST keyboard ever on any tech device! If you want to un-complicate your tech life and just do stuff like e-mail, KZbin, basic photo editing via Google Photos in a very fun, breezy way, then this is your device.

Great review, I have loved my Pixel LS for three years. I use it more than my MacBook and MacBook Pro. I hope this product stops the knee jerk negative reaction to this device due to it's price where the same people will praise the more expensive iPad Pro which is both heavier , does not have a backlit keyboard and does not run a desktop browser. Please compare these two devices. The Pixelbook I am sure will be the better value.

Great video! I passed my first Chromebook (Acer R11) on to my eight year old granddaughter when I bought my Pixel 2 in 2015. It has been her constant companion ever since. So, my next move is to pass the Pixel 2 on to her to reward her for her initiative in discovering everything the old Acer can do. I will now replace the Pixel 2 with the new Pixelbook. I believe that the chromebook should be marketed as an android tablet that runs desktop chrome with a new laptop google skin on it. At least in a sales perspective. However doing this would not introduce users into the chrome operating system. But still, at least in this scenario it makes more sense as it still feels primarily as a secondary device and as if you have main machine, say a powerful desktop in your dorm and a comparatively weak but sill perfectly usable Laptop/Tablet for studies, note taking, etcetera.
@ernestmac137 жыл бұрын
Many people who's main computing device has been a phone or tablet often would prefer not having to switch to a different OS, so from their perspective a Chromebook is a good choice. For folks on a budget, low end Windows machines which have only two Gigabytes of Ram and 32 - 64 Gigabytes of storage; while running the resource hungry Windows OS and desktop apps, often find they can a Chromebook with double the memory which makes resource friendly Android Apps run smoothly. I see reviews from folks who have spent $400 on an i3 windows laptop, where they complain how painfully slow these machines are. You will get lag when running Office, or even when simply using the Operating System on such machines. If you are more prone to single tasking, such a machine might work out for you, but most folks keep several tbs open in their browser, have multiple apps and or documents running at one time, etc, meaning such a machine will seem like a dinosaur. The fact that, for what you spend on a heavy low end PC laptop without a touch screen, you can get a device like the Samsung Chromebook Plus, with the same screen as the Pixelbook which is 2400 x 1600 vs the Windows Laptop's 720 or 768P resolution. You also get a device which has USB-C ports and a longer battery life. The i3 will be limited as to it's ability to run multi-media apps, and those laptops with only 2 Gigabytes of Ram I previously mentioned are even less so able to run such apps. While it's true one can purchase a Windows Laptop with a decent dedicated graphics chip for the price of the pixelbook, many customers wrongly blame, their experiences with, viruses, hardware they have damaged out of a lack of knowledge as to how to safeguard their device from such damage, their ignorance about the need to back up their data, and due to their assumption that they can only use in their eyes the expensive office and multimedia apps sold by major companies, not to mention the disaster that was Windows 8 on the hardware itself. Another reason folks migrate to Chromebooks is the lower learning curve in regards to navigating the operating system, and even though once you know how to use an iOS device learning OSX isn't that much more difficult, folks often dislike the more restrictive operating system that is Apple OS. While limiting users ability to run beta software which isn't yet fully ready for market, and limiting their ability to use software not authorized by Apple may help prevent hardware conflicts and make for a machine less vulnerable to viruses; it often limits the users choices when it comes to hardware peripherals, etc. An example of how Apple's mindset limits functionality is the continued use of lightening ports, which drastically limits iOS devices ability to connect to other hardware. Even the lowest end Chromebooks tend to come with USB ports, enabling users to connect external storage, connect to printers, and to even charge mobile devices with the Chromebook. The Samsung Chromebook Plus and Pro, along with the Google Pixelbook lineup have only USB-C, but due to these ports putting out enough power to run multiple devices, users are able to get mini docking station that provide multiple USB ports, HDMI, Ethernet Ports, etc. These Chromebooks are also powerful enough to run Linux at the equivalent speed as Windows Laptops, so rather then being simply a waste of money, Chromebooks are a viable choice for many people. This is above and beyond the fact many schools and school districts are using Chromebooks as a much lower cost tool for teaching their students, while making it affordable for most parents to purchase a computer for their child, or the fact Google Docs is quickly growing in use in the business community.

Thanks for the vid. I'd love to buy you a brew !:) I'm "one of those people" who are looking at chromebook for the first time and I got a Pixelbook (my first chromebook). So far, I really like it a lot. It's reliably fast and I haven't seen is hiccup, slow down, or have any lags in start-up or shut off. The hardware is really--really great and sharp and sophisticated. I use a lyric scroller app in the tablet mode on music stand and works great. I understand the controversy over this but I also realize this is not for everybody. I really--REALLY love the chance to break away from Microsoft too!!! I think there's some room for improvements, such as the awkwardness of getting two icons for certain apps (one from android store and other from chrome on line store). I'll hope Google continues to update and improve this stuff. Ther's a lot of haters for the pixelbook and they complain of the price but I looked at other chromebooks and the hardware is not nearly as nice. So far, I love it and is the best running laptop I've literally ever owned to date.

Checkout rollapp.com, it's a service that streams the best Linux applications, there are also services that stream windows apps, including things like Photoshop. Superb analysis. Have had my i5 version about 6 months ago, and it's still the best 'laptop' I have ever owned for all the reasons you state. My other hardware is a 2017 MacBook Pro 15" (for video editing), iPad Pro 10.5 (for graphic design/thinking), an MSI Gaming laptop and low end Lenovo Yoga convertible - that is design wise, the closes to the Pixelbook, even has a USB-C port!.) I used to own a Surface Pro 4, but various software/firmware issues forced me to dump it, despite the superb form factor. 6 months later, and this is where Apple and Microsoft are so good when it comes to marketing (they sell solutions, not the tech), after evaluating all manner of diagramming and mind mapping services and apps, I have just discovered LucidChart. It runs great in a desktop browser, the iOS app is not too bad, but in Chrome on the Pixelbook (and other touch screen laptops, inc the aforementioned Lenovo), one cannot use the touch screen or Google (etc) Pen to drag objects onto the canvas or manipulate them, defeating the object of owning a touch and pen driven machine. Most of us buy our laptops for a core task, and being I'm a creative / strategic thinker, a core app that I really need to work 100% on the Pixelbook doesn't function properly. It's not the Pixelbook's fault, but if Google want people to buy this machine being it has the power to do it, they need to develop Pixebook optimised MATURE business apps (diagramming etc) and pro video editing tools, if no one else is going to do it. Damn, the high end PB has an i7 and the spec of a MacBook Pro of only a few years ago. There is enough local memory (128 GB to 512 GB) to store media and run power apps, with the cloud used to sync settings and archive content. Else the Pixelbook is going to remain that curiosity people look at in the store, but don't buy. They can get a fairly swanky HP Spectre or Envy touch and pen equipped convertible for the same price that runs a full desktop OS, even if that OS is a pile or !&£*&*&*. Thanks to it's superior ergonomics / keyboard etc, am wanting my Pixelbook to be my ONLY machine, but we're not there yet. Google? Step up to the mic.

Very detailed video, thank you for that. Will by one when the Chromebooks are able to work with a scanner, I mean a professional scanner, not a printer scanner.

Random question but what is this like for playback of high quality video from your own camera and youtube. For example does it struggle playing back 1440P or 2160P video?

This is the best PixelBook review I've seen -- after watching about a dozen of them. Thoughtful, insightful, graceful. This needs a higher view count. You're doing good work. Best editorial voice, by far. Based on your review, I took delivery on a PixelBook yesterday. Took three seconds to set it up, and it's an unbelievably satisfying computing experience. Of course, I've gotten used to Chrome and Android over the past few years, but still -- i was stunned at how well my PixelBook immediately integrates with all my Chrome bookmarks, phone data, and passwords. I didn't have to port anything. It was all just there. It's really cool in laptop and tablet modes. Thanks for steering my to a good place.

I've just upgraded to the Pixelbook from the Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015). No regrets at all. And I decided to rewatch this review on my new Pixelbook. It's still fantastic.

The Pixelbook is my favorite computer hands down. A lot of it has to do with the build. I believe its the most well built peice of hardware by Google hands down. But its starting to struggle to keep up with some of my demands. The only thing I would change in a successor is uodate camera, updated processor, and smaller bezels. And now I'm dreading when I have to retire it because I'm not seeing anything that evokes the same build and aesthetics. I hope they revist it.

I don't know. Over a year ago I bought my Chromebooks and Chromeboxes when it was announced that they would have Android support, more than a year later I'm still sitting here waiting for it with the possibility that it would never come. I think it's time for me to move on and go back to MacOS or Windows.

GG2K7AU05 hopefully people learned their lessons with the Google Chromebook Pixel. Pay $999 and get a Mac that will continue to update and last years that has full featured desktop software or get a glorified Android Tablet that's software won't be updated past a few years 👎👎👎
@sbellaharris7 жыл бұрын
First of all, I will never buy a Pixelbook, that's just too damn expensive, there are other Chromebooks that are reasonably priced if not cheap and are well made. Tbf, their updates do last for years and it's getting updates constantly, just not the Android support(for most models). I would NOT go back to MacOS or Windows if they would just release the Android update now. Imo, MacOS and Windows devices are way too expensive than they need to be just like the Pixelbook, like most people I don't do heavy gaming and editing stuff, we don't need that. A Chromebook with Android apps is just right for us but to have to wait for over a year with no horizon in sight is just way too much and kinda forced me to go back to MacOS or Windows.

Android app compatibility currently takes 1.6GB of RAM without anything running. On a 2GB RAM/16GB SSD chromebook, you'd get terrible performance.
@curtisjmurphy7 жыл бұрын
If you look at the initial batch of models that had android app support in beta they were all 32GB models with 4GB of ram or more. If you purchased a lower spec or older model it likely never will get android app support. That said, there are great models that support android apps at very reasonable devices like the Acer R11, i just bough 2 more for my parents and inlaws for $250 CAD. In the interim, look into crouton, it would give you a full desktop enviroment and the more powerful apps that you are missing due to the lack of android.
@curtisjmurphy7 жыл бұрын
@ Branden Schuler. I cant even decide where to begin tearing apart your comment. The price is an easy target: The cheapest Mac in Canada is the MacBook Air at $1200 CAD. For that amount of money I could buy 5 very nicely equipped Chromebooks like the Acer R11, even if they only last 2 years each that puts me at 10 years down the road for the same investment as the MacBook that surly wont last that long (in any useful sense anyway). A little more abstract, use-case scenarios: You state the Mac has "full featured desktop software" and the Chromebook is "a glorified Android tablet". I'll leave your interpretation of the two OS's for another argument and another day and give you the benefit of the doubt. Of the people I know or interact with on a regular basis I can say that less than 5%, maybe 2 people total, require a "full featured desktop". One is a graphic design artist the other is an audio engineer, they certainly aren't the norm when it comes to computing requirements. The vast majority of my friends and family simply use their computers as portals to the internet; social media, email, research, e-commerce, streaming video/audio that's about it. For these tasks a Chromebook isn't only sufficient, its likely ideal, even if it is a "glorified Android tablet" Updates: My grandparents are still using my old HP Chromebook 14 from early 2013 and it still get frequent updates. As with the user you were replying to, it hasn't gotten (and likely won't get) Android app support, but has none the less gotten continuous updates since the day it came out of the box with no indication of support ending any time soon. Android app support is an added feature that not all legacy Chromebooks will support, just as not all new features make it to older mac's, like Continuity not being supported on older Macs despite getting the update to Yosemite. Basically, its understandable that a Chromebook may not work for you personally, but none of the arguments you presented are valid reasons for most other people to avoid them.

I will never understand manufacturers not including somewhere to stow the stylus. Microsoft's Surface, HP's Spectre, apparently the Pixelbook. It's just ridiculous. An important element to the user experience, and they just let you leave it floating in a bag. I love my Samsung Chromebook Plus. The stylus was a major selling point for me, and the stowage for it is a glorious thing to experience, after spending a year trying not to lose my Spectre's stylus.

I agree with your point. I loved the silo for my s pen on my Chromebook pro. Takes me back to my galaxy note pro 12.2 days. Consistently reliable.
@ernestmac137 жыл бұрын
While I agree, it isn't always possible to cram a place to store a stylus within a device; which is why there is an aftermarket for stylus holders which adhere to the device. The advantage to this method isn't just laziness or poor engineering, it enables users to customize their device. There are companies that sell protective repositionable vinyl substrate called skins, which not only protect your device from scratches, they help prevent it from slipping out of your hands or sliding off of a table when it is bumped. There are even instructions on-line on how to make your own custom skins, so a little web searching will go a long way.
@professionallylay7037 жыл бұрын
Some might think of that as an imposition if they're not looking to continue dumping money into the device, though a matter of personal preference I suppose. Specificlly which aftermarket stylus would you recommend, and why should anybody else get it?

Wacom's Bamboo stylus.

Does this device work with the pen from Samsung's CB Pro since both devices use Wacom EMR tech?

No, the Pixelbook uses Wacom AES, with the technology in the pen, and only AES pens will work with it.
