This was the version of Street Fighter I played as a kid with my brother, circa 1991 right as SF2 hype took hold. It was the Hi-Tech Expressions release, in the bargain bin at CompUSA and we picked it up and marveled at the back of the box screenshots which looked just like the arcade. Then we got home and started playing it and... with a lot of effort we were able to make it near to the end but never finished it, because we were never able to make the specials trigger properly. (And we suspected that maybe the graphics on Tandy looked better, but that was our ignorance creating wishful thinking.)

I do remember that Street Fighter II was so big when it came out that some asked "was there ever a Street Fighter 1?" But as to the DOS version skipped, are you SURE you didn't unlock some sort of secret Hyper Turbo mode? :D (no, upgraded versions was one of the things the second game introduced, whether or not that was a good thing.)
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 5 жыл бұрын
+spartonberry All the upgrades to SF2 were a response to its extreme popularity contrasted with the complaints it got. People wanted to play the boss characters, so there was a Championship Edition. People wanted the game to go faster, so then came Turbo. The popularity continued but the game was aging in the arcades, so rather than release a whole new game which would require operators to buy new hardware, they simply updated the original with new characters for Super, then added Turbo to that later on, with Super Street Fighter II Turbo becoming the definitive edition of the game, and ALL of that was in the span of just three years! Street Fighter Alpha would be the next game in the series, followed closely by Street Fighter III which itself also had plenty of updates, not getting a console port until the third update, "Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike". :B

@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 5 жыл бұрын
+KomradeMikhail That'd be a really weird requirement if two-player mode could only be started by using a second joystick, especially given the complete absence of anything to do with two player mode in the manual. I'll give it a try later tonight though and will post some additional info the in the video description if anything comes up. :B

Yeah, ick. I've played Street Fighter in the arcades with those velocity-sensitive buttons. I can count on one hand the number of times I demanded a refund because of a faulty game due to lack of maintenance, and this game was one of them. I even threatened to bust the coin doors open over it because it was so fuckawful... As for the DOS port... What...The...ASS... Like, this looks like it was made for the Commodore VIC-20 or the ZX Spectrum...DOS PCs could handle a lot more than this, and it just goes to show how incompetent they were in porting this game and so many others to a very capable platform...

Gosh, it's a rough port alright. They've really chosen a strange set of colours out of the EGA palette for the visuals. It's a very cold tone, and strangely enough… quite 80s (well, our Vaporwave vision of it) in a real weird way! Not sure if you felt the same as you were grabbing footage for this.

Back in the 90s companys would port there IP to any console under the sun they could and the result was a buch of terrible ports that just make finding games from that period confusing and time consuming. I swear when i was a kid there was a version of doom on my toaster.

$10 says the reason they changed the China stage's text to Japanese is because they only had photos of the stages and had to build the bitmaps from scratch... And the photos were too blurry so they had to improvise what the text was... And they didn't realize that Japanese isn't Chinese...

Truthfully... I nearly closed the video, the channel is called "Ancient Dos Games" and I was halfway through wondering why you were yammering on about what was clearly an Arcade game - no DOS games looked like that or ran that fast, and that music is the same chip used in Megadrives and arcade boards. I scrubbed through till I saw an EGA picture and continued from there. Just honest feedback about my personal experience.

The first skip-ahead wasn't skipping, it was just terrible programming. The second skip was an actual skip and felt like a recording issue on your end. But even if it wasn't, bad games are bad, and this one was just one in a series of bad capcom conversions during the 1980s. They're all terrible (see Side Arms, Bionic Commando, Sarge, Trojan, Pocket Rockets, etc.). Some companies knew how to program for PCs in the 80s, some didn't. Capcom didn't.

Capcom sold the rights to these non-Japanese computer ports to non-Japanese publishers and washed their hands of whatever comes out of these licensees. The only market that mattered to Japanese publishers (Sega, Capcom, Konami, etc.) was Japan, so they didn't care that these American and European computer ports were only fit for a dumpster fire because it's free money for the Japanese publishers and Japan was never going to experience these abominations because they get the good ports on their Japanese computers and consoles.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 5 жыл бұрын
+Jim Leonard I assure you, that all actually happened in real time. There's several more of these skips in the footage but those two were the most notable for the sheer quantity of frames skipped as most of the other skips were more like 30 to 60 frames worth. :P

Oh boy, never played SF1 on the pc... but this looks like a damn masterpiece compared to the 8-bit versions. :D Those things are borderline unplayable. Gotta mention this if someone doesn't know; but to add insult to injury, Tiertex - the studio that made the micro-conversions even released their own sequel called *Street Fighter II: Human Killing Machine,* which is arguably even worse. Oh, and btw. there's a DOS-version of that one too. EDIT: Ok, I got trolled. Commented on the halfway of the video.. :D Indeed the DOS-version looks quite bit like the C64 one, and the fact that it's on a such more powerful system makes it even worse.. Although, despite the screwups with the special moves, the DOS one still *has* special moves, unlike the C64 version (and I think the same goes for Amstrad and the Spectrum.)
