3 years later but I'm sure this response might help anyone coming late to the party: Add a black solid layer on top of all the layers, and change the blending from normal to color. This turn the canvas in black and white. Now you can see and separate all the elements by using values (luminosity). Foreground and background embellishment elements should have flat mid values (40-60%). Platforms should have higher values space (30-70%). Players and enemy should be higher values space (15-85%). Effect or dangerous area of effects should have the highest value space (5-95% almost pure white almost pure black). On top of that you play with saturation, using high saturation on elements that should catch the player attentions (I'll mention again the example of a dangerous effect that warn the player from an incoming enemy attack), and low saturation for area less important elements.

I understand this is more of a theory video but i wanted to talk about the examples at 2:44. What is called beginner method has what we know is more contrast, and the advanced method is more washed out. but we obviously being pixel art we want it to pop out as much as we can. So… and this is my theory (only experience is truly only through photoshop photo’s and thumbnails, which i do have experience in) we could mix these styles, although i know some people may think its messy from the pixels artists eye. For example in this picture if we keep the same contrast and palette for the main subject being (presumably) tree house and even the wood then we use the bluer->yellower (advanced palette) for the leaves it will make the tree house pop more. And give more meaning and vibrancy to the image. This is probably something you wouldn’t want to recommend for a darker art style, but even then if you want something to pop this will definitely help. Theoretically.

Interesting. It might be also good to use LCH (luminance, chroma, hue) palette instead of HSV. Advantage is better matching of luminance across color spectrum if that matters. Problem is that not all combinations are valid, so sometimes, it's like choosing the most saturated color available. They lose saturation towards white and black. But it's hard to work with it cause it's not widespread and only way to generate palette is either online utility or script.

Worth noting that colours in RGB/HSV are not uniformly bright to human eyes. Therefore you may find more success working in a system like OKLAB (or the HSV equivalent of that). RGB/HSV actually makes it harder to let go of some “beginner” mistakes, such as picking base colours of equal brightness. In HSB, blue and yellow of “equal” brightness will nonetheless contrast each other due to the non-uniformity mentioned before, making them work better for a colour palette than they “really should”. Working with OKLAB makes it super clear that a good palette makes use of both colour and brightness differences between colours. It’s certainly not required, but I’ve found it makes my mental process clearer.

I’ve been trying to understand colors better for years and this is the first time I’ve heard of hue shifting. I think it’s going to help me a ton. I’m struggling to figure out how to hue shift the right amount though. The degrees of hue, saturation, and value don’t change an equal amount between each shift so how do we properly make our own?

00:44 There's a misconception in your video. What you called "saturation" is actually tint, and what you called "brightness" is what painters call "shade". Tint comes from adding white paint to a color pigment, making it brighter. Shade comes from adding black paint to a color pigment, making it darker. Saturation doesn't influence brightness or darkness - the "intensity" (as you called it) stays the same, just the color gets more bleak and ultimately gray. Brightness is a full range between black and white, with the most vibrant color in the middle (this is how it works in the HSB color model). Half of this range, from black to the most vibrant color, is called "value" (used in the HSV color model).

Choosing color is still a huge problem or even the main obstacle for me as I understood how essential shades are. I gotta look if there's a video on shadows and although I appreciate the attempt to cover anything in less than 5 minutes about color palettes I am sure that it can't be enough. Books I found about drawing talk about grey scales and how you have to hold the coal or pencil to get it working. Probably starting with grayscale might be the clue. I'd say unless you haven't made a video about shades and shading start doing it now.

First of all thanks for the video, it's really helpful! I'm very new to trying my hand at pixel art for a game and am wondering about the scope of colour palettes. Would you use different color palettes for different levels or the one colour palette for the entire game? Additionally is there an upper limit of how many colours should be included in a palette? Thanks for watching! As long as all the colours work well together, you can pretty much do anything you want. For the different palettes for different levels, some people have a big enough palette that they can just pick a handful of those colours for different 'biomes', but I don't see a problem with having entirely different palettes for different levels.
