I read that the main singer and leader of the band hated lip-syncing (and disliked making music videos in general), so instead they just opened their mouths each time they were supposed to pretend to sing as a way to mock it.

@@davidtingley9978 Another fun fact is that when their song "Velouria" became popular in the UK they were offered a spot to play it in a british tv show, but they were told that only songs that had a video were allowed, so they just recorded a 23 seconds video of them running down a quarry, and slowed it down to make it the duration of the song.

I'll never have any qualms about saying Pixies (and yes, you can say THE Pixies) are my favorite band of all time. They probably would have been much bigger if they even remotely cared about making videos during MTV's heyday, but they returned as conquering heroes when they reunited for Coachella, and became pop cultural fabric when "Where is My Mind" rung in the final scene of Fight Club. Now they are just an institution with a catalog of songs that can match anyone's.

They were one of my favorite post-punk bands. They were so loved, you have no idea. I first heard them on their first EP on the local College radio station and ran right out and bought it. We played that into the ground and then as each one came out after that we would get it. I saw them like three times, once in a fairly small venue which was really amazing. They're a bit of an acquired taste to a lot of people but for someone like me who really understood clearly what their influences were and then their decisions about how to combine those and then put their own twist on it and also the timing of it was just perfect it was just right where it needed to be between Punk and later stuff after that and more pop versus extremely experimental or anything they were just kind of walking around in the middle there and so compelling and so fun they were so colorful. There's a lot of humor in there lyrics an awful lot of playfulness and music is it's great it's so stripped down. It's like intentionally the lowest production value it can be, although I would say that they're later albums did start to get some really good production and it fit with their sound perfectly. They were maturing as a band and all of it was just so good, so fun.

Listening to this song, I initially thought it was a 60s group because... listen to it. That sound is VERY reminiscent of the 60s, but I just looked them up (never heard of them before as best I can recall) and they were formed in 1986 in Boston. I would never have guessed that they were that (relatively) new. Learn something new every day so long as you approach each day with an open mind

I was in on the livestream when this song was selected. Many of us wanted "Gouge Away" which more the band's style. But, many others wanted this song. Which is ok, but a little more on the band's softer side. Well, at least we don't have to see that request again and get more of the heavier songs picked next time. lol. The Pixies were kind of being sarcastic here on the music video. Facial expressions and open mouths. They didn't do many videos during the '80s and early '90s/ Their music videos tends to be basic. . They weren't very mainstream , more of an underground band big in in the alternative and college rock scene. The singer Francis wasn't too big on this song and they kind of trolled in their video. BTW, Brad. Its man. Not mans! lol

In an interview with NME, Black Francis commented on the meaning of the song: “It's about winos and hobos traveling on the trains, who die in the California Earthquake. Before earthquakes, everything gets very calm-animals stop talking and birds stop chirping and there's no wind. It's very ominous. I've been through a few earthquakes, actually, 'cause I grew up in California. I was only in one big one, in 1971. I was very young and I slept through it. I've been awake through lots of small ones at school and at home. It's very exciting actually-a very comical thing. It's like the earth is shaking, and what can you do? Nothing.” The word "boxcar" was apparently a starting point for the song's lyrics, and Francis has suggested that this was in part inspired by the song "Carnival of Sorts (Box Car)" by R.E.M.: "I probably liked the word 'boxcar' because I heard it on the R.E.M. song, from their first record."

@@evenflowsteven I heard about that one. California has a lot of building codes with earthquakes in mind. A 5.8 that was deep underground or off the coast wouldn’t cause too much damage. So that was one of the songs where black Francis was singing. But Kim deal, who is the bass player, and she went off and started her own band later, called the Breeders and they had quite a bit of success in the alternative music world. So anyway, if you ever want to hear one with Kim singing, definitely check out Gigantic (A Big Big Love). It's it's so fun and another one of theirs that I absolutely love because it's so melodic and it's earlier on, it's called caribou. It has them both singing together on parts of it and it's just beautiful To hear how strident and weird they can be, check out Elevator Lady. It's actually the first one of theirs that I ever heard, my friend had added it on to the end of a compilation tape from the Violent Femmes, a different band, and we had parked out by the lake and we were just blasting his car stereo and then out of the blue this song came on and I could not believe what I was hearing. I put my hands to my ears and I was like make it stop! Make it stop. And then I started to get into it and suddenly I couldn't get out of my head later and so I went out and bought that album and it is long been one of my absolute favorite songs of theirs. I just love it so much.

Pixies won another poll?? I must've missed it. 😔. This is one of their lighter songs, sounds more jangle pop like REM. Pixies have way more better songs than this one, heavier. Should've done "Debaser", "Gouge Away", "Gigantic ", "Veloroa', "Caribou", etc. More punkier songs. They were alternative/Indie rock gods like Sonic Youth, Jane's Addiction/Pornos for Pyros, REM, RHCPs, etc during the '80s and early '90s, especially on alternative and college radio stations. 120 Minutes on MTV, too a tv show for alternative music. Big influences for future alternative rock bands that became more mainstream ('90s, '00s). Check out more of The Breeders, too. Kim Deals (Pixies female bass guitarist and co-songer) band during the '90s and early '00s. Also one of those bands, Nirvana was heavily influenced by Sonic Youth, Pixies, etc.

They're showing how authentic they are, by, overtly, not lip syncing, with their mouths just agape. I watched, Kim with The Breeders (2022), in concert, just the other day. She's still having a blast. Pixies, too.

There's a theory (just a theory) that this song is inspired by the bombing of Nagasaki, the bomb was named Fatman (here comes your man) . Dropped by the plane bockscar (outside there's a boxcar waiting). " Is a wind makes a palm stop blowing a big big stone fall and break my crown. " is one of the more obvious references. Obvious no one is going to get that from a first, second or even a thousandth listen but the dots do connect after someone points them out. Overall it's a nice catchy song and the meaning is unimportant

The Pixies were very influential on what follows. They have a very interesting off beat sense of humor along with brilliant song writing.

The story behind the video was they where not really into the song when they recorded . The song was to be radio friendly. The reason why they had their mouths open was that they where fucking around during the recording of the video.

A great band! Yes, this song is at the edge but not over - what is great. Other songs of the Pixies are over the edge and they are great. It is one of the most exiting albums of all time that is soo rich and offers you so many facets. And yes songs as "I bleed" have an incredible tension and are not that easy listening as this song but exiting.

"Here Comes Your Man" could be the Pixies response to "Here She Comes Now" by The Velvet Underground. PS. Check out The PIxies "Gigantic" when you can.

as I understand it the band were concerned that this song was very commercial sounding and could be exploited to try to cynically broaden their appeal. they were trying to subvert the release of the song by not playing ball with the video and trying to make sure it didn't misrepresent what they, and the song, were about.

This is actually a song about nuclear bombs. Not a joke. Or maybe a joke. The rumor was that it was about the first two nuclear bombs that were dropped on Japan. But this may have been a tongue in cheek reference. The other possibility is that it’s a song about hobos in California in an earthquake. Even though it’s framed as an upbeat song the lyrics are actually about something for different and darker. Frank black or black Francis as he was known then would write complexity e oblique lyrics that are hard to decipher.

This is actually an incredibly unhappy song, lyrically speaking. A lot of Pixies songs are about dark topics such as graphic injuries, human extinction, and incest. The song is about a group of hobos living in a train car. They're waiting for something to happen, hoping that something will change in their lives, and it does: an earthquake causes rocks to smash their heads in. "Here comes your man" is another (incredibly sarcastic) way of saying "something's finally happening". I should note, however, that I'm not sure if the song was always intended to be so dark, because the second verse was seemingly added after it was originally written (during their very early demos and concerts, they played the song much slower and with only the first verse). You should definitely also listen to "Brick is Red", which is one of their shortest songs but probably their most brilliant.
