Yeah, it's funny he starts smiling almost immediately upon hearing the lyrics and vocals kick in. Never would have anticipated this affinity for the Pixies from Brad As far as Foolittle, I'm decidedly in the minority it seems but I think the second half of the album is better than the first. I feel like this song deserves some cultural context, back in the day when I was a kid in the 80's and even for quite a while before that New York and New Jersey used to dump all our trash in the ocean just huge heaping barges all day every day so that explains that part. Also there used to be a hole in the sky, we had a massive hole in the ozone layer that would pass over South America and by all reports when the hole was passing over things got so hot people were hallucinating.

The alternative and indie stream was so fun and diverse. Need to do it again later on. Pixies influenced a lot of bands in '90s and '00s, including Nirvana. Brad loves Pixies! So cool 😎 Sonic Youth is going to rub off on him later, too. Also an influence on Nirvana. They were under the same record label Sub Pop Records and toured together on concerts. These groups were punk rock inspired and good bass guitars. Pixies is like surf punk. Brad next Pixies video to see is "Gouge Away"! Also "Gigantic", "Caribou", "Debaser", "Alec Eiffel", "Velouria", "No 13 Baby". Look more into The Breeders, too. Kim Deal's 2nd group during the '90s. Shes the bass guitar player and backup singer for Pixies. All these groups were big on college radio and alternative radio stations back then late '80s, early '90s. MTV videos on alternative music shows. Music like this became mainstream later on during the '90s and '00s.

First of all, this video got the line wrong, it's not an "...underwater guy", it's an "...underwater god" Poseidon was killed by ten million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey. The whole in the sky is the Ozone hole. The song is about mans negative effect on the environment. Pixies songs all have understandable meanings, the lyrics are just presented in an abstract manner.

This was on the alternative/indie stream the other night. Pixies were a great band. Basically early grunge here. lol It's a slowed down punk rock style music with sludgy guitars, surf punk. It's post-punk, which usually also has a funky distinct bass guitar beat. Guess who Nirvana modeled themselves after? Pixies and many of the underground band back then. Nirvana was once underground, too until they hit it big in the early '90s. Many of these kinds of bands weren't well known in the mainstream ('80s) unless you listened to college radio, alternative radio stations (DJs were/are hip, young college students, lots of freedom/individuality, experimental, also bands self promoted to the radio stations and on campuses) and if you stayed up late at night to watch MTV music videos on 2 hour programs like 120 Minutes and Alternative Nation during the '80s and '90s, which showed groups like these. Also Cutting Edge program ('80s) on MTV. Or through zines , underground circulations and magazines. Or through word of mouth, hanging out with friends at record stores, college music rooms, , concerts/touring, networking, video shoots, DIY mantra, played in smaller venues/underground clubs, grew fan base, promoted cassettes/CDs, posters, t-shirts. College radio and alt radio stations plays lots of non mainstream stuff. During the '70s, '80s, early '90s, you would hear new wave, punk, alt rock, indie rock, early hip hop and reggae on these stations, these genres were mostly underground back then. Many of these artists were under smaller record labels and independent labels. Indie basically means independent. Most of their music sounded very different (its very experimental and fusions) from mainstream and popular music or bands under large record labels, corporate/commercial music. .Also were alternative label came from, meaning non mainstream. Back then it was usually called 'Modern" music or modern rock. Remember, during most of these years, technology and social media wasn't as the way it is now.. When the late '80s, early '90s came around. The radio and MTV was bombarded by hair rock/metal (most of them were mainly blues based hard rock) during the '80s, was growing bland and non original by the early '90s. That's when the huge alternative rock, along with hip hop, punk/grunge, exploded into mainstream. Bands like Pixies, Sonic Youth, REM, early U2, Dinosaur JR, Husker Du, 10000 Maniacs, The Smithereens, early RHCP The Smiths, , etc helped pave the way during the '80s and early '90s. All once college radio stars , started to become mainstream, some went on to bigger record labels. . Hair bands kind of faded away into the background by the mid/late '90s. Many still tour, but itsnt the same as it was during the '80s. While alternative music has been pretty mainstream after all of these years since then. There are still college radio stations, BTW. Same thing, they play lots of mainstream stuff and that includes modern day non mainstream music. For Pixies they lasted from the mid '80s til the early '90s. They recently reunited a few years ago. I recommend to check out "Gouge Away", " Debaser", "Alec Eiffel" , "No 13 Baby", "Gigantic, and " Velouria" next, with the videos. Also check out more of The Breeders . After Pixies broke up during the '90s. Kim Deal (Pixies bassist and co-singer), she formed her own group, they were around from the '90s - early '00s. Check out "Saints", "Safari", Divine Hammer", "Son of Three". Nirvana was also influenced a lot by Sonic Youth, they were record label mate (Sup Pop) and toured on concerts together. Check out more of Sonic Youth . Videos like "Dirty Boots" and "Teen Age Riot". BTW, that was awesome stream that you 2 did last week, Alternative/Indie stream. Fun stream that went well. Keep those coming!

The Pixies were one of many bands influenced by the Modern Lovers (Jonathan Richman is a genius). You should do a few reaction vids to Modern Lovers tracks like "Pablo Picasso" and others off their debut album. It was produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground and set the stage for much of the musical sensibilities of the punk & new wave of the 70s into the 80s. They were the crown jewel of the Boston music scene of the early 70s. Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads & David Robinson of the Cars were in the band.

"If man is five?" Five is associated with humans: we have a body with five prominent appendages, two arms, two legs, and a head. Also, we have five fingers and toes and traditionally we have five senses. "If the devil is six." 666 has been associated with the devil for centuries. "Then God is seven." Seventh heaven. These lyrics are not some kind of arbitrary nonsense. They contain meaning.

When we were getting forced bad hair bands in our ears and eyes from radio and TV. . This was the alternative we had back in the late '80s and others like Pixies, REM, RHCP, Sonic Youth, Janes Addiction, B-52s, or other punk, new wave, R&B/funk, and early hip hop and some pop. We liked this. Then the alternative rock and hip hop became popular mainstream in the '90s, we needed that!

Brad if you see this. Head's up, there's an older PIXIES - "Where Is My Mind" Tribute album from 1999, that has your boys WEEZER on it covering "Velouria". Also the comp has the following bands : Local H, Braid, Samiam, Eve 6, The Get Up Kids, Samiam and a lot more Indie rock bands. To be honest, none of the covers are better than the Original Pixies songs, but it's worth checking out maybe on a cover's stream sometime.

I still shout Rock me Joe before any lead guitar solo. I love the Pixies, the lyrics are always interesting and slightly out of leftfield. You need to listen to Gigantic, which has Kim Deal singing on it rather than Frank Black. Apparently and I may have been mislead but Gigantic is a tribute to a liaison Kim had with a gentleman of colour.

NOTHING BEATS '80s-'90s GRUNGE-ALT!!! No matter how much music I listen to, old & new, no matter the variety that I listen to, no matter that I listen to metal more than anything else - at my foundation will ALWAYS be '80s-'90s grunge-alternative, and every single time I listen to one of these songs I'm grinning ear to ear as I'm reminded of that. One of these days I'll grab a guitar again and write my own awful takes on everyone's favorite era of depressing, emotional, drug riddled, sarcastic, self-deprecating, musically phenomenal rock... On the topic of sarcastic yet phenomenal music, The Pixies are essentially in a kind of place like Primus - they challenge you to take music that's this superbly crafted & performed(with extreme technical wankery in the case of Primus) seriously, with those lyrics woven into the instruments. I'll put Clutch in that realm as well, not that any of the 3 sound similar, but rather that they are such incredible musicians with equally incredible senses of humor(I think I plural'd that right?). I know there's a few more examples of this too...

Y’all want weird and random, check out violent femmes. My absolute fav VF’s songs are Add It Up & Kiss Off. Honorable mention is Country Death Song. When I was a teenager I had a cool friend who had a bunch of pre-grunge music like Violent Femmes & Pixies. He also got me into riot grl bands like Bikini Kill & Sleeter Kinney. But my fav weird music is probably ween. They’re just such an interesting mix of beautiful & melodic & weird as fck. Like Baby Btch is a perfect example. It’s melodically pretty but also weird. The Mollusk is a nautical themed album and had one of my all time fav Ween songs on it, mutilated lips. Another beautiful song with fcked up lyrics. Also Banana and blow is another good example of their style. They’re just such a great band.
