I wonder if there is a way to set smoothness to zero by default under some preference tab. This would make it easier in the sense this would be used more often and you don't have to worry about changing it.

Ok so I've been using Photoshop for the past 4 years, I never discovered this channel until the last few months. I desperately tried to search up tutorials to learn Photoshop. It's safe to say that I have learnt more in the past 3 months from this channel than I have done in my entire 3 and a half year of using Photoshop.

I actually had realized this, when I was applying the random gradient map as you showed on a previous video when I tried since I reactivated my adobe, it didn't give a great result and I played with the smoothness button and this is when I realize that it used to not be defaulted like this before. But it's great that you explained it, cause sometimes when photoshop made the update , it's confusing to adjust and know what to do when things don't work the same.

You are no doubt the best TEACHER in this Industry for EDITING but whenever I watch your video, I feel that my mind is congested. I love when you finding this functions which always were there, but no one noticed, have you done some video about calculations? Or maybe distribute along path pattern (it's also less known, but can look really cool cause distributing path allows using drop shadow so one object cast shadow at previous)?

In addition to putting the Smoothing control at 0 (Gradient Editor), try changing the "Method" drop down from "Pereptual" to "Classic" (Gradcient Properties). I find that gives a better B&W starting point. Alternately, try "Linear" in the Method drop down (Properties) and different Smoothing settings (Editor).

I use a black-and-white gradient all the time to add contrast instead of a traditional curve layer. Then, I adjust the opacity slider to set the amount. If it's a color image I change the blending mode from normal to luminosity to bring back the color.

It's not faulty, it's just that it is very exact. The reason the gradient changed is because you started a few pixels away from the very edge of your artboard and the absolute black is dragged a little bit inwards. You have to be very precise so it won't change. The reason the image (the girl with the beanie) changed is simplier, the original photo's black is not absolute black, it's dark gray, same for white, gray, almost white. You have to check the darkest and brightest points on your images to have the best results. Photos rarely contain absolute black or absolute white.

There is a significant change because there is a lot less pure black in the original image. The gradient you used is gradiating from black to white in equal sized increments, where in real life light, this very rarely occurs. Generally speaking, there it's always a little more or less light/shadow on a specific area than a perfect tonal gradation across the board. Also, depending on the black to white conversion used originally, things will have a different outcome. A LAB channel conversion to B&W is noticeably different to a gradient map conversion.
