other way i find it quicker to do it is: select face that you want to have those pattern, isolate them , subdivide (1)them (apply it ) then use decimate->unsubdivide 1 (apply it) , et voila , then merge back to original mesh

wow tried it and it works. How do you get them to fully connect though? I joined the two objects back together but the vertices are still technically separated.

No. That was a horrible difficult way to do it. Select all but the top and bottom, Subdivide, Edge Menu > Unsubdivide and in the popup settings window set the number of iterations to 1. Done - quads to diamonds. OR Select all but top and bottom, Poke Faces, Triangles to quads. Done - quads to diamonds.
