This sketch is actually quite remarkable. McCarthy doesn't appear to be reading any prompter ; it looks like she's mostly winging it. And Sudeikis seems to be in partial improvisation mode as well because he's keeping up very well with her random additions. Very rare to see that on SNL where the skits are most of the time rigorously scripted

SNL doesn't use teleprompters. They use cue cards. Yes, they both had a a few slight instances where they seemed to add a little bit off the cuff, but they are in no way winging it. All SNL sketches are scripted. They just happen to be better at not making it obvious that they're reading cards.

4:46 - 5:46 Felt like I was watching a play, not a tv sketch. They handled comedy and drama within that minute without breaking or trying to make each other laugh like on eeevery other snl sketch. I’d love to see them acting together in a movie or series, I know I’d watch it right away. I think the reason it's so funny is that she's moved the descriptive phrase to an incorrect place in the sentence. Melissa says, "My friends call me all the time, they say - on the phone - Barb..." when people normally say, "My friends call me on the phone all the time and say..." She turned "on the phone" into an interjection, which is nonsensical. It isn't a common mistake; I don't think I've ever heard it anywhere else, and it struck me how brilliant and distinctive it was when I first heard it. I'll have to work it into a novel some day. Melissa's the real deal.
