It's a really weird things to retcon imo. His anxiety and the raging breakdown he has at the end of the game, combined with the existence of the Peppino clones and Fake Peppino (probably all failed attempts at recreating his inhuman strength) would make more sense with the idea that he IS a war vet than if he wasn't.
