I hope this doesn't become a thing. Both Mike and PJ looked uncomfortable out there. Commercializing a game of skate because of how well it did on BATB... Although skateboarding should be this popular and made readily available to everyone, just seemed like big business running a muck. I dunno. Didn't like seeing this on X-Games, something as small as a game of skate being blown up globally sorta takes away from the sanctity. Not sure if I'm wording this correctly.
@fallen4life08010 жыл бұрын
This is a debate has been going on for the last 10 years. It first started when Nike Sb got their hands on skateboarding and people didn't like Nikes advertising feeling it was taking away the unique skater-owned skateboard scene and exposing it to their marketing world. Now most companies are getting their hands on skateboarding cause they're seeing the value in it (yes its a out the €€€) BUT it also provides great resources, careers, and coverage for many skaters. And pros for the most part seem to love it, why else would pros be joining Nike, X-games, or even approve of ESPN hosting street league and now this game of skate? PJ and Mike mo looked concentrated and pumped NOT uncomfortable, the way I saw mike pop and land his tricks seed like he was in it to win. So I hope this does become "a thing" The problem is with the fans, we as fans (well not me) don't see the gravity of the situation cause we're not pros. We don't know much about the business and just see skateboarding as the small, unique, underground thing it was in the late 90s and early 2000s so many fans feel like it shouldn't become commercialized. I for one love it cause its still "skater owned" it's simply funded by big company money which helps.
@fallen4life08010 жыл бұрын
Also (hope you read my first comment) this is the first year ESPN does this, I'm certain the formatting and replays will change. Do you remember Street leagues first year, Rob Dyrdeck (sp?) Got feedback from some of the pros and organizers to see what they didn't like and did like..... And trust boy were there things they didn't like. But its gotten better since then. Give it time. Skateboarding is barely emerging into the scene.
@raincity60410 жыл бұрын
Omar Morales Luna Read both you comments. Totally see what you're saying... I guess we'll just have to see where it goes. As much as I like the way things are, who are we, who is anyone to say what goes where in what direction. It's the evolution of Skateboarding and I'm just here for the ride I suppose. Been skating since 98, and the amount of coverage it's getting now is so global I guess there's not much more that can be done. But leave it to big business to find a way. Lovin street league and the recognition skateboarding is getting. It's not so much looked at as a bad kid thing anymore, but more of a sport and way of life. I guess the point I was trying to make was, it looked super digi and commercialized this way. Street league did it, but made it look a little better. I dunno, mixed feelings. Skateboarding is skateboarding. It will always be amazing. Thanks for the reply man! :)
@fallen4life08010 жыл бұрын
No yeah I fell you too. Hope I didn't come out to aggressive up there. i do actually see a few negatives of this as well. Me and my friend were actually talking about this last week. How certain parts of skateboarding are disappearing or misrepresented due to "Natural Selection" of big companies phasing out the little guy (i.e fallen shoe company is losing out to Nike & Adidas) and they sort of promote skateboarding as just another extreme sport to the masses. But like you said we just gotta see where it goes, guys like Rob, Berra, PRod & Koston are doing a great job at collaborating with the big guys while still maintaining skateboarding's original integrity. Its like watching your kid grow up and make sure he doesn't get involved or influenced by the wrong people haha. This game of skate was a nice treat, I understand why the broadcasters need to be repetitive in explaining the defense/offense margins of error, rules etc (cause its being broadcasted to the general crowd for the first time not just us skaters) but it def needs work and a little more collab from the pro skaters themselves.. (On a side note I think the ref was a douche)
@agoniavr10 жыл бұрын
Agreed, that's the exact same feeling I had while watching this. I mean, it's a GoS final and there's mostly families and kids around? Seriously? Plus, I don't quite like the screaming kids + ref stopping the skater which is already pushing for a trick for the replay. That gets your focus from 100 to 0 in a second, this is kinda sad actually.

This is not how skate was suppose to be played. The ref (who is a random), told them to slow down in the beginning and made them wait for replays, and throughout the whole competition made bad calls. The X Games just isn't the place for this game.

well if they put a legit referee is ok.. no call on toes drug, wrong tricks name and more hahaha.. if they do this in a bigger place with the BEST name in THE WORLD.. even at 20€ each person, they would full the place.. and x games have money for do it instead the berrics, that for all the love I had for them, they don't have.. so they can create a HUGE event

This was a live recording, berrics is an edit.
@baldguywithbeard8 жыл бұрын
The Berrics game of skate were also live recordings, they just cut the roll ins and mixed some fun stuff that happened in between (like these guys mixed in the replays). I think the reason is more like because this is a commercial event hosted by a commercial tv channel with random public that may or may not know what the hell is going on, while at the berrics it's more like a small gathering of friends doing stuff.
@yaboynarkoo75628 жыл бұрын
+Koon lmao them cutting out the roll ups and putting in fun stuff is an edit
@RalphLindsen8 жыл бұрын
Yep, they cut out the 'boring' stuff and added fun stuff. This video is as it is recorded. No edits, you often hear them tell the skaters to wait so they can show a replay and stuff. You could make this a much smoother edit and it will be a lot more enjoyable. But I have to admit that you won't get the same atmosphere as the berrics. But it's not the main problem of this video.

Mo and Ladd are the best flat ground skaters ever really
@TheAsiansk8ter10 жыл бұрын
Mike Mo's face when they kept on doing replays xD the chanting kids, the shit ref who wouldn't stfu. The replays were cool and all. But Battle At The Berrics is more preferable as compared to commercially fancified ESPN stuff. Commenting past losses and wins really can be distracting.

Those kids in the crowd reminded me of those school of fish on Spongebob Squarepants that kept begging for Krabby Patties

Alright Here is what you do... PUT A GRIND RAIL IN THE CENTER AND PLAY A GAME OF SKATE WITH THE GRIND RAIL! THEN IT WILL GET REALLY INTERESTING!
@patwalsh936010 жыл бұрын
That would take away the the name 'flatground'

The mike mo flip (Impossible late flip) will take Shane o neil's switch double tre any day . If he does it down a 8 stair in street league it will be the first 10 ever!
@Strafebach10 жыл бұрын
Definitely i agree man, have you seen the batb 5 final where shane o'neill set the switch double tre and mike mo lands it with ease! Was so sick!

0:54 the judge says mike to slow down 'cause he makes a treflip as second trick?? WTF...
@rykrodflo9 жыл бұрын
He was making the tricks immediately after PJ's, so they couldn't replay properly.
@KingBarney9 жыл бұрын
He meant slow down as in let them talk in between the tricks and shit.
