nice tutorial. based on this, and to achieve better zebras and tangents, the following steps could be made: 1. cross overlap pipes 2. trim 3. join to polysurface 4. fillet to required radius with distance from paths fillet option (not rollin ball) 5. delete created fillets and trim surfaces not needed with edge curves. 6. Surface Blend all edges with default settings and curvature seleted. 7. join all 8. trim joint with a circle to clean up edges. 9. use the patch tool to fill centre gap. if the center bulge that patch creates is not acceptable: 10. create cross lines from top of cylinders and split them and the half cylinders in half. 11. extrude the lines to the opposite of the corner to use for tangents in the patch tool. 12. patch each corner separately using surface edges, repeat for all corners. Filleting with distance from paths is very handy in some cases, like this one. The above will work without deleting the fillets and using them instead of Surface Blend, but zebras will not be so smooth. *edit:* we can also simplify the above, leave the pipes in a distance, split in half, blend each one with curvature (or do one and rotate/copy like shown in the video), Join and fill the star gap with patch. But it is a tad less smooth on top of joint, but it feels more precise.

@@PJChenJewelryDesign You are a great teacher! I work with rhino since 1 year, but you have the best tutorials i have to say. Thanks for the time ot make them and share them! Maybe i can ask you one question. I dont like the Boolish in Rhino, because after it its done and often you need it to make 3d prints. 1) can you show how you prepare everything for an STL so that it works. And 2nd boolish, is there a way like in Blender3d to make boolish make what bools invisible instead of cutting it out totally? I have often the problem that i use it and later i have to fill the gap again because it wasnt the right place. In Blender its that it is invisible and you can move it as a normal object. I hope you know what i mean :-) Is there a way to do it too in rhino, maybe a plugin or something with grasshopper?

Maybe someone here know it better can answer your questions.

1. Rebuild the fillet curves to degree 5 and adjust the second CV at each end to match the first in a line (flat G2 at end points) 2. Do the same with the bigger curve on top (to be deg. 5) and match the G2 as flat at each end 3. Build the Sweep 2 rail (deg. 5 curves as rails) and from the surface edges, then choose Match Curvature. Rotate + Copy. 4. Build the top surface as sweep 2 rails in the similar way to match the curved surface. Rotate + Copy 5. Join and done

Hi PJ Chen. Good lessons. In this case, the more acurate and precise geometry to join the alf cilinders is using the revolution tool with the cilinder alf edge. Have you tried this option? Tks

P.J is there any difference between joining surfuce by planar curves instead of 2,3 or 4 edge curves? Thank for the information though. Very helpful!!!
@PJChenJewelryDesign5 жыл бұрын
for the planar curve one, all the curves must be flat. for the 2,3,4 curve, it can be any type of curve. even the curve is not touch at the end to each others.

I only wanted to design a 3-way dowel connector and this is the rabbit hole I've falled down. Honestly, much as I like the software, it should be so much easier to combine solids in Rhino without creating nightmare geometry that won't print.
@PJChenJewelryDesign4 жыл бұрын
Rhino 5 use to have Tspline can do the job easier and Rhino 6 doesn't have it anymore. However, Rhino 7 will have the quad design coming back. you can actually download the Rhino 7 WIP to play around.
