I bought a new Vstrom 1050 in 2023, taking a lot of heat from several BMW GS riding friends. 27,000 miles later, not one single thing has gone wrong with the Suzuki. I have ridden it coast to coast across the U.S. twice in the last year. The icing on the cake is, I paid about half for the Vstrom than what a GS cost. The savings paid for both of those cross country trips, including all lodging, food, fuel, tires, maintenance etc. If you buy a bike that doesn’t break in the first place, you don’t need a courtesy bike.

Have you ever owned one? My GS is 9 years old and i have never had any issue. I don‘t know about the 1300, but your comment is too generalizing in my opinion. The chance to see videos about problems of a first year model are much bigger, if you look at the best selling bike of it‘s class. And above that … all my buddies, who own a GS, would not buy one of the first year of a model. We have always left that to the people, that want to be the first ones and there seems to be a endless supply of them. What i like about BMW? That they don‘t let their customers hang out dry, like KTM. After the last service i got a letter, that the kardan of my GS model has to be changed every 60k kilometers from now on … first i though: wtf … but then i saw … they will do that free of charge for the whole life of the bike … which is 9 years old. These beemers cost a serious amount of money nowadays. I’ve had 3 GSs, older and less techy 1100/1150s and they were very reliable and durable, tough as nails and did some serious off-road in Australia. Bikes are far more exposed to the elements and it doesn’t take much to upset the electrics…talk to any auto electrician and he’ll tell you it’s very difficult to track down problems with relatively simple tech, but solid state problems are almost impossible (hence replacement of your entire screen). It’s a race to the bottom fitting tech like this, once one manufacturer did it the others are compelled to follow suit due to competitive pressure, personally I don’t like it. I had a fabulous KTM 1290SA, first series, no LCD screen controller, and it was brilliant…never had a mechanical or electrical problem, never had any problems, bought it in Germany, did most of EU, Russia, Ukraine, and shipped it to Australia and did a few “laps” round Australia then sold it. Bullet proof and amazingly capable. I won’t buy the current series despite the brilliant LC8 engine because I don’t trust the electrics and I don’t want to be stranded in the outback where I do some pretty serious off-road travel. Unfortunately I’ve been “forced” to go backwards to a 2012 990 Adventure which has the brilliant engine and suspension, and a similar vintage 690 enduro r because I don’t trust the modern electrics and I can fix any mechanical problem. For me it’s a pity they don’t offer a base model in the series that has more analogue gauges and switchgear for modes etc. My old 1290SA had ABS/TC/Modes etc but all operated by switchgear and not dependent on touchscreens, for me that’s perfect. Now I feel I’ve been pushed towards being a Luddite and riding bikes several generations behind, which I don’t really want to but I just can’t get what I want, which is the up to date engine and suspension without the digital controllers…just give me decent switchgear :))

Although I really dislike BMWs, I have to be fair here. There is a reason why people say, never buy a first generation of anything. I had 25 BMW motorcycles over 35 or so years starting with a lightly used R60/2 and then a mix of new and very mint and original used /5, /6, R, RS, G/S, GS/PD, K75RS, etc etc, sometimes 3 bikes at once for a while. It was great and I was/am a gearhead rider. After a very, charitably said, uninspiring, expensive and short ownership of a 1250 GSA, that capped off the last decade of my own declining satisfaction with their machinery, now I don’t even look at new BMW models. That was 11 years ago and to me it’s still a bit of a sad thing to have turned in my roundel. But there are many wonderful options. Good news there, but hard to fathom what has transpired at the motorradwerk. I am familiar with the fact that, even in the /2 to /5 transition era around 1970, there was angst about BMW not being modern enough to be competitive etc. Jokes about the car designers getting drunk on the last Friday of the month and cranking out the bikes, all that sort of thing. In fact, I was around then. Different than now. The current product line doesn’t really work well in this challenging market, there is not a clear unifying product concept, the product range is too wide for their sales and production levels and the models are all over the place in design and, seemingly, in quality. All over the place but never in first place, in my opinion etc etc. Example: The Chinese made BMW branded engines may or may not be great, no idea or opinion, but the exact engine can be had on a Chinese-made Voge bike at about 1/2- 1/3 the price. And even a KLR650 is arguably a better tractor anyway, with a huge support aftermarket, and costs half of even the Voge price. But there are many, many solid wonderful bikes, most Japanese, even if not “super cheap”. Many. It’s just sad that BMW seems a bit lost. I have a 10 year old bought new and still wonderful if a bit quirky Moto Guzzi 1400 road bike now. Don’t feel any pull for much else wrt that kind of bike. Am maybe considering small(er) bore options. No BMWs likely. Anyway, I ramble, good luck, please continue to do what you want to do.

But BMW north Oxford and Carlisle wear I know live have been fantastic not that I have had much issues with my Transcontinental bar software updates and one recall. But I permit I haven’t done many tours on her as I did on the last bike not the bikes fault or anything to do with it more life and running my own business issues. BMW have always offered and provided a courtesy bike even on a 1-2hr service. But probably down to how good is the dealership on customer care. I had it once wear north Oxford had my previous bike in for several days and without any authorisation gave me a courtesy bike over the entire repair period irrespective on how long it takes them to do it, but that was on the senior manger taking the shot on it. Down to customer care and ethics of the dealership. And I’m only a casual biker and yet they seem to jump through hoops. But there are the odd BMW dealer that seem to just jump to the tune of BMW head office and not customer focused. But in general BMW still better than most brands due in most cases the level of support seems better. But like everything there are better dealers and garages than others.

Most manufacturers have no mention of a courtesy bike in any of their warranty literature. This also applies to car manufacturers. That being said, it's likely the dealer's call if they can spare one of their own bikes, and maybe get some reimbursement from BMW. Can't really comment on why this time was different, other than maybe they anticipated that your bike would be out of service for several weeks, which it was, and there's no guarantee BMW would provide any compensation...? I shudder at the degree of electronics on new bikes. Unlike mechanical systems, electronics can be very expensive, as they're typically integrated and controlled by a central computer; they're somewhat fragile in some situations; they're almost impossible for a typical DIY repair; and many of their features are rarely, if ever, used by their owners. They make good marketing tools, but are expensive over-kill IMHO. I have owned 2 BMW R1150-RS bikes and put 170,000-km on them. Other than EFI and ABS, there's minimal electronics, and I've had zero mechanical or electrical problems. I maintain them myself and they look and run like the first day they rolled out of the dealer. I think BMW makes excellent bikes, but like all manufacturers they outsource their electronics, and are susceptible to quality variance, like every other manufacturer who out-sources. The R1300-GS is a totally revised machine, from the engine up, so hopefully these issues will go away by the time the second year of production arrives.

Having owned a R1200 and a R1250GSb and do 6k per annum. I have been fortunate and haven’t had any major issues, other than a couple of recalls and software updates. The standard of service delivered by North Oxford has consistently been excellent. The biggest issue for me is your dealer not providing a courtesy bike and this is likely to be because they either don’t have enough demonstrators or present demand is too great.

Yeah for me it’s the most surprising and also frustrating element on top of the very spotty communication

Similar here, 2 days after the break-in maintenance got red screen. BMW road help picked up the bike next morning. Battery completely died by that time (that was likely my fault as I forgot the key in the seat lock). I wouldn't ride it myself to the dealer anyway, without speedometer and horn it's illegal. Next day I took the bike back home. Dealer (in the Netherlands) says they only updated the software and charged the battery. Didn't happen again (at least yet). @TheStammeringBiker, good luck with the bike. Hope it is fixed soon and no problems anymore.

"Hello indeed, I am from Belgium. I am very happy with my R1300, but I have the same problem I had before. But yes, it got back to normal by itself. I have already experienced four times while riding that the mechanic wants to stall, but he then picks it up again. And I find it annoying that you cannot find saddle lowering parts. Also, my rear passengers' legs get wet when it rains, which leads to hypothermia. And I can't order those side bags anywhere; so much money, yet so many smaller problems. As a result, your day gets ruined. But otherwise, yes, I really enjoy riding it."

You were very brave buying into a job 1 automotive product, especially from BMW. People who design and manufacture new automotive products will tell you to stay well away from new stuff for at least a year, two if possible. We need brave people like you at the front of the queue to help find the real world design/manufacturing gremlins and undocumented features that will always exist. The automotive design graduates, creative thinkers and costs reduction specialists has screwed the industry. BMW, along with others, have made some blinding cock-ups. My 5 Series had a junk diesel six cylinder engine. They've lost me for good. I do feel sorry for the poor people at the sharp end who have to deal with the customers who have been treated badly. Good luck.

The last good BMW bike built was the R100R, I’ve had 2 airheads superb motorcycles, true kick the tyres and light the fire and go bikes, south of France here we come 🤣 my K75 and R1100RS were utter dross my Ducatis and Vespa PX 125 were more reliable on continental tour my last Beemer lunched its motor within a couple of thousand miles fixed under warranty 2 months at the dealers, then within another 1000 miles it burnt its wiring loom from the headlight back warranty was out 2 weeks so nothing they could do they said, the product does not stand up to the hype. was chatting to two GS1200 riders returning on the ferry after a Italian tour, both of their bikes had let them down gearbox and shaft drive issue they got as far as Bordeaux and had to be recovered the were pissed as you would imagine, asked me where I had been told them France n Italy on my Ducati ST4S and they both laughed and said “your brave” 😳

Hi from another Blood biker with an R1300GS. I've also had various issues 1st was the starter relay which was done twice and now has the older 1250 relay The suspension went very soft and the software was updated Then the suspension went down while in France I had 3 brown warning sceens one saying suspension adjustment not avalible The bike was rideable but very low It went in to my dealer and they fitted a new rear shock The next problem was last week on the way to the Lake District the cruise control sundenly cut out and 2 more brown screens this time one saying there is a brake light fault The second saying cruise control not possible due to brake light faulty I stoped and switched the bike off on restart it was OK It did it again latter but then was OK after the restart for the next 300 miles I have had a courtesy bike each time it's been in Lind in Welwyn Garden City Who is your dealer they should be giving you a courtesy bike Mine has done 4000 miles John

Rule of thumb, never buy an all new model bike, car for minimum 12 months. This allow the silly people who must have the latest to deal with the issues. Not that anyone should have any issues with an all new model. BMW lost the plot years ago, you pay a premium price for a premium product or so you think. I’m keeping my ever Reliable 2008 1200GS which I’ve had since new. Hope you get it all sorted Mate.

Unbelievable them saying we understand you do not want to ride the bike is a joke , no speedo illegal, no indicators what the hell do BMW think they are doing, as a blood biker they should have offered a bike in the first instance , try the courts route as it seems your bike was not fit for purpose when they sold it to you they have your money and now you do not matter to them, and do not accept any excuse as they are an EU company so the warranty is at least 2 years. Another factor is you posting on social media means just as with the KTM cam issues the people thinking of buying and then looking on You Tube for any issues will see the problems and lack of support from BMW UK and take their money elsewhere and this will affect sales. As you say it is BMW UK who are at fault and not your dealer who are doing what they can.
