Summer of 1993 San Diego 7:30am surfing and who do I paddle out to? Eddie Vedder was surfing same spot and I paddle out and last person I expected to see wave and smile at me would be Eddie lol. I had an out of body experience for a micro second then sat on my board about 15 feet away and Eddie ask how my morning was going and I did the same. He said he was on a little get away from his hectic schedule. I acted like I was cool about who I was talking to but had to say how much I love his bands music and thanked him for his honesty in his lyrics. He grinned and says hmmm honesty in my lyrics?! Interesting comment. He just smiles as he started paddling into a wave and says stay tuned in!! I've been a diehard fan from day one as I was a huge mother love bone fan. I've seen pearl jam 26 times on 3 different continents in 11 different countries. I'm hooked!! Haven't seen Ed out surfing since that day but I still surf the same beaches all these years later🤙🏄

That last bit where he says 'I dont want to insult you by saying that's a stupid question' sums up this whole interview nicely. I feel so bad for Vedder. He's already so camera shy and then to have to deal with this idiocy. He looks so tired, they couldnt wait till the next morning? These people are vultures. Vedder made perfect sense to me, though, whatever he said.

I don’t think the drunken thing is a persona hahah look at all those bottles! But he did have an angsty vibe around 93-94 that I think he played up on!
@dooley87462 жыл бұрын
Nope, because he really was troubled around this time. You just need more context. What's interesting about the video is it's an mtv interview where he's talking about the band's issues with mtv. Maybe they should have canceled the interview because he had been drinking, they talked about canceling it, but they went ahead with it because he seemed to be making sense. But then they also show the beer bottles. I'd love to hear from the interviewer and cameraman about who's side they were on during the talks. Their music dealt with some pretty heavy stuff that hit very close to home for the band. Their video for Jeremy was meant to make a major statement, but it also faced a lot of backlash and Mtv eventually edited the video for younger audiences (which essentially negated the whole statement/left out info Eddie felt pertinent from the story that inspired the video). Part of him totally understood the concerns that prompted the edit, but the edited video also altered the entire communication and he didn't want the edited video to air. It made him very hesitant to make more videos going forward. I'll try to give you an example so you can see his point of view. Let's say you shot a man who was actively physically attacking you, that's self defense. But when the news runs the story, they leave out the context and just say you shot a man. How the general public deals with you from here on out will be drastically different than if the full story is told. You'd be pretty upset the full story isn't told, right? Or if the news reported that a man was shot, no context given. The people of the city might go on a witch hunt looking for whoever shot him, not realizing it was a justified shooting. That would be a pretty dangerous situation as well. Different scenario but the concept is similar. Eddie made the video thinking it would only air at night, but mtv was so excited to have a new Pearl jam video they went ahead and aired it right as children got home from school and didn't disclose that Eddie never intended it to run during the day, making Pearl Jam look real bad to the public. Then the mtv-edited video made it clear the kid in the video died, but not that he shot himself. How was that less traumatizing to young audiences than knowing he committed suicide? Or not airing it while children are awake at all? And it's about a real story that happened, that a news channel could talk about freely during the same time slot, but mtv got in trouble for showing a video depicting the shooting. If young audiences are too immature to handle the video, then don't run the video or at least run it late at night like the band intended. The edit didn't make it better for the kids. Should the news be only on at night? The news described the incident that inspired the video when it happened and kids are allowed to watch the news... Sometimes artists really are troubled. I suppose he could have chose to not care about kids or that people thought he set out to traumatize children, but he did care. He wasn't faking being troubled. Right before this interview, he was also being pressured by the label to make more music videos, but no guarantee had been established yet that his videos would air as submitted (or that younger audiences were actually being considered), and mtv still hadn't disclosed that they never intended for the video to air during the day, so in this interview he was arguing he shouldn't have to make any more videos given what happened. He actually expressed himself very coherently, and it was a good productive conversation at the time of filming. I would guess all those bottles were from the entire band and maybe even several bands, and that he wasn't very inebriated. Pearl Jam did end up making more music videos, but only used video concepts that would be allowed to air during any time slot for future videos - never fully trusting mtv again. I find this interview very interesting, the band was right in the middle of the Jeremy video being a scandal and weren't perceived kindly by the public.

People are always asking influential artists what they think about legislation and social issues, and then they get mad when the artists answer. Anyone with enough airtime will be asked to comment on these things, and anyone with as much influence as these guys will be tormented about what their followers will take away from the things they say in answer. Social commentary is unavoidable when it comes to fame. And your opinions stated in comments on KZbin can be criticized just as harshly thanks to social media. Now you know how it feels to have someone say your opinions are nauseating. You're welcome.
