Yup but imagine what it must feel like to have lost a shit load of money doing dumb shit, knowing later on in life you could have been set for life and still been able to do some of the dumb shit if you'd known better from the get go. That's worse I'd say and in this case its better to not have it then to have had it and lost it. I'd much rather be living paycheck to paycheck then live with the fact I ruined the only chance I'll ever have to be wealthy.

I remember in high school my best friend and his 2 brothers all had million dollar trusts set up by their dad who owned an insurance company but had a terrible proclivity for gold diggers. When he left and sold the company his partners sued so he moved all their trusts and investments under his new wife’s name and she made like 5 million dollars disappear like it was nothingggg. He now lives in a condo by the beach alone and his kids live by the skin of their teeth. Sad story

The sad part is there's typically 3 types of people I've met with lump sums of money. the first one blows the money and goes broke very quickly and has nothing to show for it afterwards other then interesting stories (by far the most common). The second one has the money, never spends a single dime on anything, including investments with little risk, and ends up dying not having used the money. The third type is the type that makes the money work for them and they are financially set because they made really solid decisions with the money. The third type is by far the rarest and its pretty shitty.

On top of Pxd and other oil stocks being STUPID cheap due to the value of a barrel of oil somehow reaching negative for like eight months. $600-1050 Unemployment, PPP loans that forgave up to $108,500 *provided that your paperwork was in order* . Man that was such an opportunity that's not coming again anytime soon. Especially Not with Biden singlehandly wrecking every Win Donald got that was visibly helping everyone's bank account. I'm native american my tribe doesn't have any money to give to our members but a neighboring tribe by the time a tribal member turns 18 they have around a $700,000 account waiting for them because they have a huge casino in the city. Knew a few of them who spent money like this patreon when they got that money and lived quarterly tribal paycheck to paycheck after they burned thru it. That was the amount they used to have but the time they turned 18 that was over 15 years ago they probably have bigger accounts when they turn 18 these days.

Anyone who's good at math can take $175k at age 18 and buy 2 shitty houses in a largish town (if you're a dude who isn't scared of living in places that are low income), rent one out, and work a job somewhere at the same time. Invest every free nickle in making sure the houses are problem free, and also buy investments that you believe in. Don't have any kids. In 10 years you'll be doing great. You'll be 28. Sell your shitty houses and move somewhere decent and start a real life with your home paid for and hopefully 10 years worth of investment money to start paying you dividends while you go to school or raise a family.

Dude should be honest but not tell them how much he lost. Say look I was making good investments but they were high risk high reward and with the current market I lost a lot of money. I'm not in financial trouble but I did loose a lot. I'm putting the rest of the money I have left in long term investments that I will be penalized for taking some out. And then leave it there. Edit: He should be honest that he lost a good portion of the money.
