Back in the early and mid2000s, my grandparents had tons of cans in their basement and my brother and I would eat soup with cans dated in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It didn't taste bad and it didn't get us sick. They got rid of the older cans when they moved to where they currently live in 2010, they still keep alot of cans just not as old now.

12:06 My mom took care of this old doctor lady who got dementia but was living for YEARS untreated and no one knew cause she was a recluse/had no friends or family alive. They discovered a room that was fully barricaded with something like 75 alive cats and the remains of 120+ other cats. Apparently the roof leaked/was semicollapsed and they were getting fresh water so there were literally generations of inbred cannibal cats living self contained in this room for up to a decade. When my mom started working there she helped with the cleanup and said the entire room was covered in skeletons ankle deep.

Btw she had some 200+ cats alive not including those in the room, they could go outside and were basically feral. They tried to give them to the humane society but only caught like 30 in the end. Very literal crazy cat lady.

Hoarding food is common for a lot of older people particularly if you have grandparents that grew up in the Great Depression. It’s difficult to imagine now but back then a quarter worth of value was a days work just to get a meal. You used to have to save trash to sell for food.

I am a hunter and I can 100% tell you leaning against a tree outside will both give you stability and surprisingly enough not make your house smell like shit because well you're leaving it outside.... You don't even need the bag because rain and just the elements of being outside will get rid of it for you... You may want to leave a mental note of which tree you did it next to so you don't step in it for like a day or so but yeah push comes to shove it's way better than inside your house

My mother in law is a hoarder. Thinks that all shit she's keeping can be used by someone some day. That's why she does it, she wants to be the person that always has what people need. Chair broke in your house? I got one right here. That kind of thing. Except that she's piled up all of this shit so much that there's no dining room anymore and it spills out into her kitchen. Her husband is disabled at this point because he fixed farm engines for 50 years and his body is broken down, so he can't even walk to the dumpster to take trash out. He's not much better, but his bullshit is all outside rusting. Random crap that he thinks will be of value some day because he watched an episode of American Pickers. It won't. Nothing he's kept will ever be worth anything. She hasn't cleaned anything in well over 10 years. When you walk in it's just a wall of stench. She's got so much crap piled up in the house that the floor is caving in, so support beams for the floor are now shoving the floor upwards in adjacent rooms. We've tried everything and we're now trying to be as blunt as possible with her. Nobody wants her garbage. We don't accept anything she offers. My wife and I's kids aren't allowed over there because frankly, the air is toxic at this point and neither are my sister in law's kids. Mother in law says she's willing the house to us so that we can make use of the house and all the stuff she's kept and I looked her right in the eye and told her not to curse us with such a thing. That if we did get the house, we'd just hand the keys to their mortgage firm or if they didn't accept it, we'd rent out a bulldozer and just level the whole damn thing as is. No way we're going to spend months on end digging through her disgusting mess just to end up having to spend tens or even hundreds of dollars to pay for a house that should be condemned. She wanted to get her house insurance company to repair the floor, not only did they outright deny her claim because it's her direct fault that the floor is fucked, but they dropped the coverage to that house and reported them to the town she lives in. She lives in the middle of bumfuck nowhere though, so the town didn't care. If you're a hoarder reading this, in all honesty, fuck you. Seriously, fuck you. What you're doing isn't just ruining your own life, you're ruining the lives of the people you claim to care about. Not only that, you are permanently ruining a house that some family could raise a kid in. Quit being such a goddamn slob.

My Grandfather is a hoarder, but comparatively minor. He doesn't hoard food (Thank god), but bits of old cars, furniture, and old bikes, especially things he finds that people have put on hard rubbish. For him, I think, it's because he grew up poor, but also because he has the mindset of "Oh, this might be useful one day, and it can be fixed up easily." (Especially with bikes, I grew up riding 20+ year old bikes that were rusted to shit because he insisted on giving me them.) It's very much an illness, and I really think you have to be somewhat forceful about it. Funnily enough, later in life he did very very well for himself and ended up purchasing several properties, so he has several properties (In a very expensive area, about 1 and a half million USD median house price), all filled with rubbish.

I have several stories relating to hording 1st: If I remember correctly, about last summer, I cleaned out the pantry in my house. I found a bottle of salad dressing from 2008, a few cans from 2003 (about as old as I am), and if I remember correctly I found a can in the far back right of the pantry from the 90's. I then promptly threw it all away and cleaned the pantry out of anything that was older than 6 months old (for canned goods, other stuff that wouldn't hold was thrown away.) 2nd: In new york city, sometime in the 40's there's a story of the collyer brothers, two extreme and nearly deranged horders. Fredrik Knudson has a good video on them 3rd: As a kid my aunt had been working as a hospice nurse or something like that and was called to an old home in some suburb nearby, the owner of the home was an old Vietnam vet who had hoarded stuff, he had piles upon piles of stuff. He had tons of cats in their too, to the point where the entire house reeked of ammonia from all the cat piss, I was told that's what killed the old vet. My dad and stepmom where then asked to help clean up some of the stuff and were welcome to keep some of the stuff for their help (I'm fuzzy on the details since this was when I was only a boy.)

It´s true that the expiration dates are often far from accurate especially on canned stuff because the producers by most western country laws have to make sure that they are in the clear even if it is stored in sub-par conditions. But that does not mean it holds twice as long or whatever, at least generally, the ingredients play a huge role. With enough time and energy from heat even the 0,001% of surviving bacteria in a can will have the opportunity to feast and multiply and since bacteria populations are nearly always exponential functions that can turn quickly. So what did we learn? Keep Cans as cool as possible if you want to store them and not consume in the very near future, every degree makes a difference when extrapolated trough time. Or ya know just buy a sealed jug of honey and become a bear.
