I work in a pathology lab that handles placentas every day. If the mother wants to take it home after it’s been examined, they have to sign a form that says they’re going to take it home for ‘burial’…but every time that happens, my colleagues and I are like ‘oh god she’s gonna eat it’. Every time.

So when my wife gave birth late last year to our daughter, I arrived late due to her induction causing her to go into labour WAY earlier than predicted. When I got into the birthing room there was already a ton of blood on the floor from mum having a Grade II tear… so seeing that and then being asked if I wanted to see the placenta… my reaction was understandably a no. But I DID catch a glimpse of it when opening the same biowaste bin to throw a used teabag in later. Woo!

Oh man it feels like this video was made for me. My mom is a doula and one of her side jobs for years has been dehydrating, grinding up, and putting placenta powder into capsules for her clients to take after birth. There isn’t SOLID evidence but I do know that it has properties that will help women avoid postpartum depression and other imbalances after giving birth. It was always a gross and embarrassing situation as a kid to have friends over and go into our basement only for it to smell like rotting meat because some random woman’s placenta was dehydrating in a corner. I thought it was a placebo thing for a bit but it does seem to hold some weight in being legit. I just hope my mom’s work is making a difference 😭 because it’s so fucking gross.
@Summer-90
@Summer-90 2 ай бұрын
As a woman that had severe postpartum depression with my first, I can honestly say, placebo or not, I have willingly tried the capsules with my second to avoid that hell again. It absolutely helped. If i missed a couple days, I could tell. I'd like to be alive for my kids. I was almost not. So, thank your mom for doing what she can. However any other way is not gonna happen. People be crazy. I'm not cooking it up, or doing anything myself. Ew.

We had a class discussion about this in a Sr. Comp class in HS in the mid-2000s because some kid brought up weird non-porno things in the hallowed 11pm/10pm central Thursday night time slot on HBO. Our middle-aged teacher accidentally let it slip that she also watched that episode of Shock Video. Then again, she also used to talk about watching lot lizards at the truck stop across the street from her when she lived in California. Cool teacher

4:22 Maori people do this after having a baby. They bury the placenta (whenua) and the umbilical cord (Pito) and often plant a tree over it. This is seen as 'tying' the child to their homeland, their tūrangawaewae. It's often called their roots. It's connecting the child with Papatūānuku, and their birth land. It's a really cool tradition.

I'd argue that it's quite common to eat (small) parts of your own body. If you've ever nibbled on a piece of dry skin on your finger or a scab, you've done it yourself.
