Simon Reeve travels to a group of unrecognised nations -- countries so obscure they don't officially exist -- in this five-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters in more than 40 countries.
On his journey he visits little-known parts of the world including Somaliland, Transniestria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, Taiwan, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
In this series, Simon Reeve is taught to fish by the President of Moldova, becomes an unofficial Somali diplomat, and finds himself crammed into a lift with the President of Georgia.
He visits a little-known country stuck in a Soviet-era time-warp, and a mountainous state which claims to have the highest rate of longevity on the planet. Simon also discovers abandoned missiles capable of destroying skyscrapers, al Qaeda terrorists in an African jail and the mass graves of children killed by soldiers.
Simon meets a blonde popstar who's a crackshot with an AK-47, a mournful guitarist, and a Taiwanese boy band. He climbs the world's tallest building, visits the site of the battle in Black Hawk Down, is electrocuted in Mogadishu, finds 5,000 year old rock paintings, buys himself a new Somali passport from a man called Mr Big Beard, and is held as a spy by the Transniestrian KGB.
Snake blood is on the menu in Asia, rock-hard yoghurt in the Caucuses, camel milk in Africa and two bottles of cognac when Simon is forced to celebrate independence with a Communist politician.
He meets a villager who sold a kidney to buy a cow, and children forced to live in freezing railway carriages. Amid the minefields of Nagorno-Karabkh, Simon is pelted with snowballs by refugee children. But in the sweltering heat of Mogadishu he needs a dozen armed gunmen just to stay alive.

Reviews of the series:
Daily Telegraph: An 'exemplary series...riveting...eye-opening...remarkable...superb'
Evening Standard (London): 'Compelling television, lifted way above a worthy travelogue by Reeve's obvious, sincere interest in the people and places he encounters'
Daily Mail: "Unmissable...makes the blood boil...It would be good if this brave programme stirred a few consciences. Shaming."
The Times: A 'consistently informative series...Reeve is an ideal guide -- brave without being macho, amused without being frivolous and always informative'
Globe and Mail (Canada): 'Places That Don't Exist is outstanding television. That's because Simon Reeve, the host/reporter, is endlessly curious and incredibly brave. When we last encountered Reeve he was showing us around "the Stans," countries such as Kazakhstan, that few outsiders visit. It was an excellent series, exceptionally revealing of both the general and specific. Reeve is now one of the great TV figures. A smart and cheerful Englishman, he's a combination of Michael Palin and serious political reporter.'
------------------------------------
SIMON REEVE is an adventurer, TV presenter and New York Times bestselling author with a passion for travel, current affairs, history, conservation and the environment. He has been around the world three times for the BBC series Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and Tropic of Cancer, and has travelled extensively in more than 100 countries. Simon's last journey around the Tropic of Cancer enthralled millions and was described by The Times of London as: "a real gem...Reeve is in a class of his own". Readers of a leading travel magazine voted it their favourite TV series. Simon, who is an ambassador for the nature conservation organisation WWF, has been awarded a One World Broadcasting Trust award for an "outstanding contribution to greater world understanding". His books include Tropic of Capricorn (published by BBC Books), and The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden and the future of terrorism, which warned of a new age of apocalyptic terrorism, and was the first in the world on bin Laden and al Qaeda. Originally published in 1998 it has been a New York Times bestseller. Simon has contributed to other studies into organised crime, terrorism, biological warfare and corruption. His book One Day in September: the story of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre was published in 2000. The film of the same name, narrated by the actor Michael Douglas, won an Oscar for best feature documentary.

So a place without an organized government is recognized as a country, but a stable government who decided to separate in order to have stability and a better life quality isn't recognized....I don't get it...

As white British guy, I can inform you why Somaliland does not exist! Somaliland is built on fake ideology on a single clan in and around Hargeysa only. If you were to give referendum in the whole of North of Somalia there would be more unionists than secessionists. Hence why they only focus on all video's regarding Somaliland in and around Hargeysa and a bit of drawings by inferior Somalis 1000 year ago in some cave. These Somalis have been the most treacherous and most loyal subjects of us the Brits. I can thank them for this as they helped us fight mad mullah. Before you call it a joke! They are unable to govern themselves as they eat lorries full of drug called Khat! Did you know that one of their presidents was Dahir Riyale Kahin who's from the notorious National State security apparatus that allegedly killed 500.000 Isaaqs? So how come he off all people became president for a people that have been massacred by the very same institution that he was employed by? SNM as well was Somali national movement indicating they were advocating for the down fall of dictator Siad barre. These are delusional bunch with little or no intellect and void of any common sense. If they would take over governance from Mogadishu to Hargeysa they would have written the narrative of all Somali people in last 27 years with staggering advancement due to recognition of being Somali capital. As all Somali people despite all their commonality they lack any real intellect into domestic affairs. That's reason Ethiopia will annex this bunch together with entire Somalia.

Lacky Ismail I never knew Somaliland existed before watching this on youtube. I hope you all can be a recognized independent country. Just one little thing though.. the word "somalilanders" may be not a good choice. Personally to me, it's kind of a bit into negative tone.. like pirate landers of some sort.. LOL. Anyway, I wish you the best of your future, people of Somaliland.

@amaanreer5311
@amaanreer5311 9 жыл бұрын
Maurits van Mook theres five clans in somaliland, only 1 wants to divide, and is pretty much forcing the rest to follow. thats one main reason, how can one clan have their own country? not even tribe, a clan.with places like kurdistan that have legitimate reasons for separation, somaliland is run by a politically greedy clan called "isaaq" that that feels they're superior to other somalis who share same language,religion,and culture with them.
@Fperfekt
@Fperfekt 9 жыл бұрын
Maurits van Mook this is the opinion of Somalilanders I have spoken to: "British Somaliland and Italy region of Somalia united to form Republic of Somalia. This union didn't last due to tribe issues and failings of the Somali government, who were in power. Somaliland left Somalia and we are doing fine now. Why join the country that almost wiped us out? Especially when that country hasn't been stable for decades, despite being regonised and receiving international help?" Maybe when Somalia builds itself like Somaliland has, there can be talks... but right now? No way. What baffles me is why don't Somalis focus their energy on rebuilding their country instead of trying to bring down the state that has left them.

True plus Taiwan is a major US ally so if Taiwan and Somaliland recognize each other Taiwan can do business in Somaliland and Taiwan can ask the US to also recognize Somaliland. Taiwan is a very rich and prosporous country with many businesses and a strong economy (one of the strongest economies in Asia). Unfortunately Taiwan is only recognized by 22 countries. Other countries don't want to recognize Taiwan because they're afraid China may get mad since China says Taiwan is a part of China.

I think the people of Somaliland at least should be given the credit and the courtesy that they are indeed more functional than the rest of Somalia. That should be enough to have them recognized as an independent nation. When you have the big bullies such as the U.S., China, and UK refuse to recognize this as a nation, then all the other countries follow like the sheep they are, instead of standing by their own views.

You failed to mention Russia who also gained and influenced the area for their own games in the cold war so perhaps making biased political statements about the contents of a program that is attempting to highlight these forgotten states is in poor taste as nationalism has already done enough damage to the world without point scoring so blatantly.

The only way to become an independent country and UN recognised is by all countries recognising you, however it does not matter if 189 countries recognise you if UK, US, Russia, France and China don't. So if the way of getting recognised by recognising Taiwan as some people in these comments are saying is a silly idea because China most certainty wont recognise you if you recognise Taiwan as an independent country.
@e0o9kii
@e0o9kii 10 жыл бұрын
Communist China (People's Republic of China) is not recognized by 22 countries because those 22 countries recognize Taiwan (The Republic of China) as the legitimate government of the whole of China. Despite this Communist China is a member of the UN and the UN security council. Also many Arab countries don't recognize Israel but Israel is in the UN.

For that Somaliland needs international recognition first. I heared (not sure where) that the US may recognize Somaliland if Somaliland agrees to help the US by stopping Al Shabab fighters from crossing into Yemen and if Somaliland agrees to help stop the pirates. Somaliland can get Taiwan to recognize Somaliland if Somaliland recognizes Taiwan as independent and not as a part of China.

many countries recognise Somaliland. Somaliland has political contacts with its neighbours Ethiopia and Djibouti, as well as with Belgium, France, Ghana, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States as well as Turkey. Somaliland is recognised by an individual countries but not internationally. this is because the United states wants a stable strong Somali federation that the US can use for military bases close to the Middle east if and when the US would like to wage war against its opponents. Somaliland proved it self stable and self dependent for an international recognition. In other words The US doesn't want Somaliland to be internationally recognised for US advantages. However, the more countries recognises Somaliland, the closer Somaliland gets to international recognition And there is nothing the US can do to prevent this from happening if the other superpowers and the African Union recognises Somaliland as a country. Also.. for all you haters.. the more you become jealous.. the more Somaliland becomes Confident for International Recognition so please.. bring on what you got...

I love Somaliland not because of who they are but the very fact that I get better treatment as British visitor in Hargeysa than Somali indigenous visitor. That is why I have started a campaign to lobby at high places for Somaliland to get recognised as British oversees territory. This would solve the irksome situation that is holding up Somaliland. Rightfully they can never get recognition solely based on being massacred by Somali Government that is foolish and inhibits any progress. Therefore rest assured it will become British oversees territory and we will use the clans of the former Somaliland camel corps who proved to be loyal assets of Mighty British Empire to attack all that refuse Britain's conquest of Somaliland. We should have never given up on you you were loyal and you stayed loyal. Thank you for your warm welcome may you see prosperity under the Jack of Union. Hura!.. For the Somalis you can't do anything because you are all fools who will get annihilated while you claim to be third country's citizenship. Viva British oversees territory of Somaliland.

To the non Somalis, let me open your eyes and educate you. The people who don't want to be apart of Somalia live in three cities in "Somaliland" Hargeisa, Berbera and Burco. The rest of the Somali northerners DO NOT want to be separated from Somalia! They want to be part of Somalia and wave the blue flag...but the civilians that live in cities such as Borama, Ceerigabo Lascaanod and many other cities are forced to accept "Somaliland" ways and flag, they're tortured and put in jail that is called Mandera jail which is somewhere between Ethiopian and Somali border and some run from their HOMELAND due to fear and others have no choice but to accept it and watch their land taken over by some people that aren't native to there! The Somaliland army has weapons and of course the civilians that live those cities I've mentioned don't so they can't protest or let their voices be heard. So please before you support this "country" educate yourself a little more and know that more than half of the population in Northern regions don't wanna separate from Somalia.

Somali Savage why cant you just accept the majority of northerners want to break away from war torn Somalia...it doesnt mean you cannot get involved for peace and tranquility...you can spend all this negative energy elsewhere...for starters use your energy to progress and emulate the positivity my friend...we Somalilanders dont hate the south....so dont misunderstand the point...we love you so much it hurts us when we see alot of death....negativity never helps so make a change,, there is alot to do...

ok you are right....Isaaq is the majority and what does that mean. wherever you go in the world someone is the majority..comprende.Isaaq is not hurtin anyone....isaaq aind blowin up ppl and livelihood .it doesnt mean you cant come to Somaliland and join in...""They are the majority"" is not a valid argument...it would be if you are in a war with them.......you can buy land in hargeisa and no one will care to bother you...you can start business there and it is guaranteed it will be alot safer then in Xamar....and for that reason they are worthy to be a country especially when other states in Africa are finding it difficult to keep peace.....think outside the box and move ur family to Somaliland....

4 years later no recognition; I don't think somaliland will ever be recognized. why because out of all the three main tribes in somaliland one tribe wants to separate from somalia, A tribe with only three cities out of the land. also the fact somalia is back will further diminish what little hope the isaaq tribe had. viva awdal viva khatumo I salute them for siding with somalia.

***** I did not get your point for the most part but I assure you one thing that Sool, Sanag, Cayn, and Awdal didn't vote for secession. Referendum never happened in Northern Somalia and if it was to happen I guarantee you the votes will split into two, USP dhulbahante and gadabursi pro Somalia one side and isssaq small clan on the other side eventually leading to isaaq loosing referendum votes landslide! So either way if you look at it; it would never happen. AU & Ethiopia won't allow the split of Somalila, the international community likewise. I myself I don't really care if the Hargaysa clan want to form their own country, nonetheless what Am against is trying to force other pro Somalia clans to join the cult. Which will never happen anyway because we have KHATUMO state the federal government recognize it as state of Somalia; son Awdal will follow, Makahir is administrated by punland.

***** Also there is no such thing as the "people of "Somaliland" that name is British colonial name. You forgot we fought against the British to erase the same name you want to sell to us! Just because you were friendly towards the British Thus sending Isaaq people to Zoos across Europe don't mean we have same characteristics. We existed before the colonialism we call ourselves Darvish,.

If Taiwan recognizes Somaliland, Taiwan can ask America to recognize Somaliland too. Also maybe America and Britain will recognize Somaliland if Somaliland helps fight and arrest Pirates in East Africa.

The rest of the world really needs to start recognising Somaliland. Maybe we should just switch the government recognition from one to the other, like the UN did with China/Taiwan in the '70s (not that this was the right thing to do either, Taiwan really got the short straw there).

Somalia (/sɵˈmɑːliə/ so-MAH-lee-ə; Somali: Soomaaliya; Arabic: الصومال‎ aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Federal Republic of Somalia[1] (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Federaalka Soomaaliya, Arabic: جمهورية الصومال الفدرالية‎ Jumhūriyyat aṣ-Ṣūmāl al-Fiderāliyya), is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. Somalia has the longest coastline on the continent's mainland,[6] and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands.[3] Climatically, hot conditions prevail year-round, with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.[7] Somalia has a population of around 10 million. Around 85% of residents are ethnic Somalis,[3] who have historically inhabited the northern part of the country. Ethnic minorities make up the remainder and are largely concentrated in the southern regions.[8] The official languages of Somalia are Somali and Arabic, both of which belong to the Afro-Asiatic family.[3] Most people in the country are Muslim,[9] with the majority being Sunni.[10] In antiquity, Somalia was an important commercial centre,[11][12] and is among the most probable locations of the fabled ancient Land of Punt.[13][14][15][16] During the Middle Ages, several powerful Somali empires dominated the regional trade, including the Ajuran Empire, the Adal Sultanate, the Warsangali Sultanate, and the Geledi Sultanate. In the late 19th century, through a succession of treaties with these kingdoms, the British and Italians gained control of parts of the coast and established the colonies of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland.[17][18] In the interior, Muhammad Abdullah Hassan's Dervish State successfully repelled the British Empire four times and forced it to retreat to the coastal region.[19] The Dervishes were finally defeated in 1920 by British airpower.[20] Italy acquired full control of the northeastern and southern parts of the area after successfully waging the so-called Campaign of the Sultanates against the ruling Majeerteen Sultanate and Sultanate of Hobyo.[18] Italian occupation lasted until 1941, yielding to British military administration. Northern Somalia would remain a protectorate, while southern Somalia became a United Nations Trusteeship in 1949. In 1960, the two regions united to form the independent Somali Republic under a civilian government.[21] Mohamed Siad Barre seized power in 1969 and established the Somali Democratic Republic. In 1991, Barre's government collapsed as the Somali Civil War broke out.
