Great video Mark, especially the final turn! This video is a great example of how chat-GPT directly invents the pieces of info that cannot find. If you make a very specific question to chat GPT on a well-known topic for yourself, you can easily detect these mistakes/inventions. For example, the protection of ideas (and paraphrasing them), does not fall under plagiarism. In general ideas are not protectable by copyright, if so, some entire creative industries and business models would be infringing. For example: book summaries (by podcasters and KZbinrs). Another example: If paraphrasing an idea would be plagiarism, there would be only one KZbin video per topic (the first person recording a video with that idea) instead of hundred of thousands. Some interesting points to think about are: - If Chat GPT does not reproduce entire fragments of works, I do not see how a chat-GPT user of the output would be infringing on those works... I mean, a person can read a book and make a summary, but chat GPT cannot? Where is the preproduction of a work happening? The question here (for me) is more if training the AI model by using works of others infringes someone else´s copyright. Some courts are checking this right now, but I hesitate users have any liability in here. - If chat GPT indeed reproduces some small fragments from many different sources: could a copyright exception apply? De Minimis, Fair Use, pastiche… Think about mashup songs in music industry (the less the author copies from each one of the previous authors, the more probable the mashup falls under the exception). - Do the developers of the AI own any rights (without entering into T&Cs) on the output? In the UK this might be possible based on their originality concept (skill & labor), but in the rest of Europe and in the US (to my knowledge), this would not be the case. This is because there is only copyright protection if the work is subjectively original (reflecting personality of the author) and developers do not control Chat-GPT´s final output. If you think about it, it would be like given rights to Microsoft for every single text that has been written by using Microsoft word…

I also found that chat GPT actually copies other people's code and claims it for its own. I asked it to write code for me and then I copied the code and searched online and found an exact copy of that code written by somebody else.

ChatGPT isn't plagiarism and you aren't plagiarizing the company by using the outputs. Why? because it's first and foremost a tool. If I write something in Microsoft Word it doesn't become the property of Microsoft. Much like Word or any other tools it has no desire to create anything original on it's own without the user. ChatGPT needs inputs to create something and you can change how it says things or phrases them, it doesn't have a conscience and it's not being "inspired" to create something new. some also say it plagiarizes code it generates. while it may seem that way, again, it's collab tool and it's coding often follows "best practices" as they are generally expected. Further, I don't plan to write my own coding language so I am not infringing on someone else's original code work. This might just like semantics but when it comes to code it's more likely protected under copyright laws more than anthing. If you are going to consider it plagiarism or copyright infrignement, who is at fault? Is it OpenAI since some claim OpenAI is in ownership or is it the end-user (input) who's doing the copyright infringement? More or less, I agree that using it to write an entire essay can be unethical and a form of cheating. When it comes to academics, people are supposed to be representing their knowledge on a topic and much like using a calculator on a test, the student hasn't proven they know the material.

There are two aspects that require clarification. First, ChatGPT, functioning as a language model, predicts the arrangement of sentence structures and word usage. To address concerns about legality and plagiarism, a straightforward solution is to consistently attribute the generated information by citing its source. This implies that when utilizing ChatGPT to summarize a research article, the resultant summary is still owned by the original author, not the user engaging in rephrasing, paraphrasing, or summarizing. Hence, the key resolution is to provide proper credit through citations. This principle is simple: any content previously expressed should be attributed to its original author, acknowledging their identity. While this may involve some effort, acknowledging the original writers is a necessary step that holds intrinsic value.

Thanks for watching! The party for ChatGPT would be Open AI, the company that created it. You’re right, it would be up to them if they wanted to sue (would be civil, not a crime), but a third party such as a school could also impose discipline for plagiarism.

No it's not possible to catch plagiarism with chatgtp because it uses original mix of words everytime you ask it to write about something. You can try it yourself just ask the same question 3 or 4 times it will always come up with different texts answering the same question.

So, if I use ChatGPT to clean up my rough draft it's still my work? I've tested a process where I paste an extremely rough draft into ChatGPT. Then I guide through a few edits, and proofread it. After a few manual edits, I'm done. It cuts out hours of work.
@tlgoody
@tlgoody Жыл бұрын
This is ChatGPT's response: If you use ChatGPT to help you edit and refine your rough draft, the end product will still be considered your work. ChatGPT is simply a tool that you are using to streamline the editing process and save time. It is important to remember to proofread and make any final manual edits to ensure that the final product is accurate and represents your own ideas and writing style. However, it is always a good idea to properly credit any tools or resources that you use in the process of creating your work.

This is a very good question. If someone writes something and run it through chat GPT for coherency, diction, first-person author writing style, or whatever you ask you will get it. It should be considered original. Unfortunately because chat GPT is not connected to the Internet there is no way for it to know if what you provide is "original" relative to what has been written elsewhere because it is learning from all over the world whatever people put into chat GPT. It's basically arranging and predicting how words should be arranged to make sense. Try it try to put some jumbled foolish sentences together and you see how it Would arrange the words in logical, coherent, and logical order to make sense. The issues around originality that's a whole different Consideration because "what's original" is hard to know these days. Course you can say hey this is my novel and here's what I thought is based on my true story and of course if you write your life story as original there should not be any qualm about whether it's original because it's relating to your experience. This is just my thoughts on your question.

FALSE! I just spoke with Chat GPT and it agreed with my reasoning that it is a tool and does not deserve to be credited as a source of information since it is not the original source and cannot give any insight as to what the original source is and because the original source could in fact be an amalgamation of various sources that citing open AA or chat GPT as the source is unnecessary because the person worthy of discovery of the information is the person who put in the work to ask the question. That said, the person is also responsible for the legitimacy of the information’s claims.
@LydaGroup
@LydaGroup Жыл бұрын
I'm thinking this may have involved what we call a leading question... But you may ultimately be right; like I said, this is a developing area of law. Context matters (ie, passing of ChatGPT's response as your own in a school paper vs. using it for a creative pursuit), and there is a difference bw disclosing its help vs. citing it as the original source. I do agree with you that the person is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the information.
