SCP-049s dialogue is a masterclass in manipulative language: The use of professional demeanor and confident, measured speech give him an air of authority, making one less likely to question his legitimacy. His use of documentation of his findings in experiments mimics the scientific method and obscures that his unwillingness to actually show any of this documentation means it could just as easily be total nonsense or even random doodles. And it should be clear that science is transparent and universal by nature, making his “research” nothing of the sort. He appeals to human fear by claiming we are infected by some unrecognizable “pestilence”, for which he has the only cure, a tactic commonly used by cults or conspiracy theorists to bring people to their side. He uses expressions of sympathy, regret, and similar humanizing emotions that go against our preconceived notions of what insane people sound like to appear of sound mind. He manipulates the doctors by attacking their intelligence by their inability to recognize the “pestilence” while framing it as “unfortunate” or “such a shame” so as to not cause them to become defensive, making others question if it really is them that don’t understand. And it works; most of the chat and alicia are trying throughout the video to justify his “Pestilence” or hypothesize what it is because he’s so good at manipulative speaking that they either don’t consider or discount the notion that he is simply insane because of how he comports himself, even though, scientifically speaking, all the signs really point to that being the most reasonable conclusion: - His experiments never have observably changing results. - He never once actually shows anyone his notebook nor explains his methods. - There is no physical evidence of any difference in those SCP-049 considers “infected” and those he doesn’t. - Indeed, he only ever talks about “the horrors” he’s seen or such without giving any details. In short; he never states anything falsifiable, which is an anathema to the real scientific method. I applaud whoever wrote this entry for their mastery of manipulative writing and I think this could be used as a potent example to teach people about this sort of language and how to identify it in real life scenarios.

I think that's true for another version of 049, but the one in this reading, I think at least, is very genuine if misguided and too single minded to see from others perspectives.
@supC_
@supC_ 10 ай бұрын
@@ragg232 I’m not saying SCP-049 is being intentionally deceptive, I agree that he believes what he’s saying. My point is that he is very good at selling his misguided worldview and was capable of convincing even the skeptical scientists of the foundation that there might be some validity to his claims for a pretty good amount of time before they caught on. But more importantly, the way it’s written makes it feel believable that the foundation scientists we are led to see as highly intelligent would actually buy his spiel. It doesn’t leave you questioning how such gullible fools could possibly hold those positions, unlike how it might in the hands of a less skilled writer. That is what I’m applauding.
@joemama2737
@joemama2737 9 ай бұрын
And on top of all that, he might not be lying at all. It is very possible he is just bullshitting the foundation and is insane. But it’s also possible that there actually is a pestilence that none of us can detect. And because of that, they can’t just discount him as crazy, because what if he isn’t. God I love SCP :)

I personally think that the "Pestilence" 049 is death itself. Think about it. Death is an incurable illness, something that haunts humans and is inevitable. It's the direct opposition of a doctor, and it would make sense that he's trying to reanimate the dead. EDIT: It would also somewhat explain why he attacked Dr. Hamm. Maybe Dr. Hamm had some sort of underlying condition that he didn't know about, and it may have gotten to the point where 049 could tell that Dr. Hamm was dying.

@@joemama2737 exactly, because anomalies can break any and all "rules" of reality we know, it could exist, or it could be bullshit. Hence why the Foundation continues to study him. My favorite part of SCP is the varied philosophies of the different GOIs, and the arguments for and against them. the "core three" of this ideological conflict are the Serpent's hand, the GOC, and the Foundation. I use these as the core 3 because they each have valid arguments. The Foundation wants to study the anomalous, in hopes of explaining it sufficiently for use by humanity. Even dangerous SCPs could hold secrets that are vital for combating apocalyptic ones, (which the foundation always has a dozen or more doomsday clocks actively counting down that they need to find an answer to). They also believe that containment serves to protect anomalous sapients from exploitation from nefarious people. They are also open about their intent to maintain human dominance of earth, even at extreme cost to other sapients. They are correct, in their own way, but there are other perspectives that have as much validity. The GoC seeks to destroy anomalous threats. The GoC's mission is to protect humanity by any means necessary, and thus they try to destroy any anomaly that *could* be a threat. To them, any anomaly that they cannot control is a threat, as any anomaly they cannot control can do, in theory, potentially anything, from reverse time to disintegrate the planet or otherwise. This perspective, however, can lead to destructive consequences, as attempting to destroy an anomaly can potentially cause something even worse, or as the poor boat family learned, the deaths of innocent thinking creatures. Though they'd argue their approach is far more ethical than the Foundation sending D-class to their deaths on an industrial scale. The Serpent's hand rejects the prior 2 group's positions, arguing that all sapient life is equally valuable, and that the masquerade that hides the anomalous from humanity prevents humanity from becoming able to learn how to live with the anomalous, which, as they point out, is just as much a part of the world as anything else, and humanity can't hide its head in the sand forever. To the serpent's hand humanity not only deserves to know, but *needs* to know about the anomalous. Keeping it a secret from the world simply means objects and individuals with potentially world-changing powers or properties are monopolized by the powerful few "in the know" who are shielded from any real accountability because the world won't be allowed to know if and when they exploit people, commit atrocities, or just do really fucked up shit. They also reject the idea that the Foundation or GoC has the authority or right to decide what is and is not "anomalous."

Volgun himself is considered the canon voice of SCP-049. The background scary part of SCP-049 is the uncertainty of whether or not he is an insane and deluded quack with supernatural abilities, or if he genuinely is the only one who can see something that no-one else can and goes about it with extreme methods. An empowered lunatic, or the only sane man staring down the face of a great plague that is invisible to everyone else. As for other topics covered by our good Volgun, I do enjoy Volgun’s video on SCP-3456, The Orcadian Horseman. Based on a real-life myth from Orkney, the SCP file adds some rather disturbing implications to the legend. If and when you start tackling SCP-001 proposals I do recommend The Volgun’s video on The Scarlet King, that one’s a good time, albeit quite extensive. Though you may want to read up on SCP’s 231 and 2317 before going into that one.

In the "End of death" canon, the start of which you recently watched with your husband, the plaque doctor completely abandons his quest to cure the pestilence stating that the main ingredient of his cure has disappeared from the world (his ability to kill with the touch), and becomes extremely depressed. Of course this vision of the doctor assumes that the pestilence is not death itself, but it ads even more to the depressing nature of the world without death.

Probably the best classic SCP with a phenomenal video, I was even talking about it earlier today with some friends. A general theory I've seen people say the Pestilence is (with even one of the big writers of the site believing it), is that it is Free Will. 049 states that it is not as simple as death or a disease, and we know that he didn't detect much of it when he first entered the Foundation, potentially because it's such a rigid organization they have little freedom of how to do their job.

Here are some curated suggestions Volgun has narrated: 2747: As below, so above-- This is a "pataphysical" SCP, aka one that deals with narrative constructs and the idea of the Foundation as a work of fiction. It's a fairly popular one that expands on those ideas with with really cool-- and terrifying-- implications. 106: The old man-- Just a really classic old-school monster SCP, similar to the Shy Guy 173: The sculpture-- THE original. The actual SCP described isn't the most unique, but it was this article-- posted to a creepypasta thread-- that started the whole phenomenon. Worth checking out just for the historical angle. 294: The coffee machine-- Weird/quirky/disturbing one, with a lot of fun experiments. Now for a few BIG ones. Pretty much any of these are great if you want to strap in for a lengthy, compelling, and very creepy story. All of these are at least a half hour long, with some reaching a full hour. 093: The red sea object (1 hour)-- I practically consider this one required viewing. One of the most ahead-of-its time skips ever-- while many "series 1" SCPs (001-999) show their age and likely wouldn't survive on the site if they were first posted today, this one still stands among the best the site has to offer. A densely layered mystery with interesting themes that slowly get peeled back one by one, with many unexpected turns. 3935: This Thing a Quiet Madness Made (40 mins)-- A ghost story and my vote for one of the scariest ones on the site, but again one with deep themes. Has thematic ties to Field Trip (aka you do not recognize the bodies in the water). Recommended on a night you don't need sleep. 5999: This Is Where I Died (1 hour)-- Also terrifying. This was written for the contest for the SCP-5000 slot. While it didn't win, it got pretty damn close. (I would recommend 5000 itself as it's also fantastic, but Volgun hasn't covered it and the SCP Explained on it is... not great IMO and misrepresents what it's actually about.) As for 5999... the theme of the 5000 contest was "mystery" and this one goes all the way with the concept, telling a story that is difficult to understand but super scary all the same.

For me this is my favorite SCP, he is just so fasinating and cool with lot of mystery. While not being over the top or too much explained like other SCP's are. While nobody still knows what the pestilence of mankind is, just many theories, but it probably isn't death or aging. The hints of what we do know is: 1. When reanimating a corpse, 049 claims the creature is now unable to spread the pestilence. How can you spead death by just being in someones presence? 2. SCP 049 stated when he enter the SCP facility he was pleased to notice how little of the pestilence there was in their facilities compared to the outside. 3. He doesn't believe every human is carrying it. 4. Animals/creatures doesn't seem to have the pestilence as much as humans according to 049, or in some cases 049 believes only humans can contract the pestilence. 5. He is close to a cure but he hasn't made it a perfect cure yet without causing death or basically mindless zombies. 6. When discussing with the doctor about the pestilence, 049 asked that the doctor stop using amateur terms like life and death and expand his mind into the horizon

I personally think there is no pestilence. If he’s is a medieval doctor then that would explain the crude “cures” he has for the pestilence. That hits so close. Imagine you are the apex, the absolute zenith of a particular thing. So in tune with it that you are the leader in that field that no one else seems to care about, but you're absolutely certain of your correctness. Then experience and time prove you right, again and again. Along comes someone who is somewhat social and not immediately running away from your explanations, details or theories. Then after what I think are years of trying to fix the thing you, and only you truly understand, you see it in the one colleague who has helped supply you with everything you needed. Who after all this time may not have understood, but was trying. His reasons aren't 100% important. But you see him walk in one day, and the problem you see creeping around every corner outside of the facility, has found your associate. --That voice acting hit me right in the feels. Also 49 might be an absolute danger to mankind in general. But what if he is simply the only one who sees the forcible evolution, and the abhorrent natural steps that cause it. I really like this one.

One interesting theory I’ve seen about 049 is that the Pestilence he is attempting to cure is actually empathy or some other seemingly fundamental aspect of human nature. Multiple SCPs have toyed with the idea that humanity as we know it has been fundamentally altered from its original state by one or more anomalies, and a couple of famous ones have implied that humans were originally a much more violent and sociopathic species until something came along and messed with the collective unconscious. This would add a whole other layer of terror to the article, because it implies that the mindless zombie-like creatures 049 produces are closer to what humans naturally are than “normal” modern humanity.

There are 3 SCP's that live in my head pretty much rent free. SCP - 001 Proposal "The Scarlet King", SCP - 4999 "Someone to Watch Over Us", and SCP - 1730 "What Happened to Site 13?". The Scarlet King is closely linked by fan consensus to SCP - 999, The Tickle Monster, and SCP - 682, The Hard to Destroy Reptile. 4999 is my personal favorite SCP. Perfectly mysterious and very calming. 1703 is a very different format from most of the files you've seen, as most of it is in an Exploration Log format, feeling more like a text version of the SCP Short Films Dollhouse and Overlord than a standard SCP file. 4999's video from The Volgun is wonderful. 1730 has yet to be covered by The Volgun, but The Exploring Series has a video that does the file full justice, albeit in a much less formal style than you're familiar with from Dr. Miller. The Scarlet King has a video from The Volgun that is over an hour long and incredibly dense, and a much more concise but somewhat watered down video from The Exploring Series.

From what I know about Scp 049 is that he is trying to cure free will. I think there was an archive that said that Dr. Hamm had a vacation set up in a few days or weeks or something and the Scp attacked him feeling that Hamm felt like he had more free will. It’s just a theory but it does make sense in the context and he cares not for death or life and he is prone to emotions so it cannot be emotions but he is a slave to making the cure which takes up all of his time. Just food for thought.

Yesss, god I love SCP-049. Wooo, yeah, no one knows what the pestilence actually is. All we know is that it isn’t the Black Death, and it ain’t the Scarlet King. I personally think like you do, that it is aging or degradation. I like that he isn’t just pure evil, I genuinely do think he’s trying to help in his own way. It makes him one of the more wholesome ones. I also love that the plague doctor actually acts like his real life counterpart when he talks about “balancing the humors”, nice touch there. Speaking of SCPs, you should do the Scarlet King next.

32:55 Some chatter mentioning SCP-5000 as a potential candidate for what the pestilence is wild. 5000 is the total isolation harness suit from an alternate dimension in the 500 series sink-hole SCP. Sure, the causal factor that led up to the events that occurred in its original dimension may be the pestilence 49 speaks of. But not 5000 itself. Sidenote: I like the objective of the original wearer of 5000 to combine 55 with the 500 series dimensional sink-hole. I suspect it collapsed that dimension or at least made it unreachable after being combined with 55. 5000's wearer in that log's interaction with Bright, despite the allegations against Brights creator, was interesting. Pluse the addition of "Blinkers" being some lethal combination of blades for arms MCT troops with the properties of SCP-176. Made them a compelling threat to the protagonist who was otherwise undetectable due to 5000's isolation harness.

Thanks for the vid! One short video that I'd love to see you to watch soon is SCP-055, less for the SCP itself and more so that you have more of the background needed for SCP-5000, which is quite the story. For Halloween, you could also watch arguably the scariest SCP, SCP-001 "When Day Breaks," or for lighter content, SCP-239, the "Witch Child." 2295 , 5031, and 1471 are good palette cleansers.

I think some of my favorite theories about what "The Pestilence" even is are the following; .) Death .) Old Age .) The Soul or Free WIll .) Sentience and/or Sapience .) Malicious or Violent Intentions .) Apathy or maybe Empathy .) Curiosity .) Ignorance I think some of these theories can also make a tone of sense thematically, especially the idea of malicious or violent intent, curiosity and even ignorance (even if they are the more unlikely ones on this list), since those are things that we also understand to "spread" similarly to diseases... like, for example being curious and asking questions can motivate others to ask questions, but in a similar vein many people also like to remain ignorant.... and we often say that "violence breeds violence", so that could also kinda make it a "plague", and the reanimated 049-2 instances have no mind that would cause them to be curious or intentionally violent as they only become violent when directed by someone else (049) or when they are provoked, but they don't do anything by themselves.

I think the Pestilence has something to do with either free will, conscience, or ignorance. Maybe it’s the combination of all three cuz if you consider how he talks about the way it shows itself and how unexpectedly violent he became towards the first doctor when he mentions the mandatory interview instead of, I’m guessing what was calmer more scientific-esque conversations. Which actually makes sense cuz if 049-2 is reanimated it has none of these it’s just a mindless reanimated corpse

I’ve always found 049 unsettling, and painfully wondered what it is he’s trying to cure without any definitive answer. 13:30 I hear you theorizing about the “Pestilence,” and it brings me back to that one Adventure Time episode: “In the dark recesses of the mind, a disease known as FEAR feasts upon the souls of those who cannot overcome it’s power…” - Pat McHale What if it’s not the process of thought, death, nor some medical disease he’s trying to eradicate, but fear, disgust, depression, anger, hatred, or some other mental, emotional, or psychological function or disorder? Or, maybe it is just decay he’s trying to cure. Sorry, I said “medical disease” because I don’t know a proper term for diseases that do not involve psychological faculties. I am NOT a doctor, nor am I studying to become a doctor.

It could be depression. It's common, tears down peoples life, would have been wide spread back in his time and ours, and would explain why destroying all mental functions "cures it". Either that or it's the common cold and 49 is just insane. 😂😂
