Australia's cities are changing. Some are sprawling while others are opting to build up. We need a housing census in the AU and the US before we go nuts on development.

Australia needs to take a leaf out of the English book on housing! My friend lives in a complex designed for the "active elderly". Only retired people go there. Australia has scores of retired people who would give up their huge homes, if something like this was available on nominal rent! It would serve a double purpose.

We call that the independent living section of Retirement Villages. Entire suburbs of Sydney are dominated by several such villages.

There is no shortage of land. Suburban houses with a backyard are great places to raise children. Concrete boxes are not. Those towers of apartments do not bring areas alive as everyone stays inside fixed to a screen. Melbourne has become just plain ugly with zero character and few green areas.

totally agree. i grew up on acreage and i couldn’t imagine living in one of these 300sqm blocks. it’s no wonder youth crime is as bad as it is. new houses don’t even have enough room to play backyard cricket
